Quoting Mick Jagger...asked the secret of the Stones longevity:
80% luck
10% talent
10% hard work

He's too humble. Make that :
10% luck
20% talent
70% hard work

Early on it might be 80-90% luck.. being in right place at the right time with the right sound being heard by the right "powerful"(connected) people who want to do the right things... 10-20% having some ability to play well(or fake playing well)

Over time it becomes 30-50% luck and playing the game the way the "powerful"(connected) people want the game to be played... and 60% being the type of artist who honestly enjoys the long term action(playing, lifestyle, etc etc)

In the really long term it is 90% being the type of human which Mick Jagger is.

Or maybe it is 99% making a deal with Louis Cyphre

Worst cases of success with minimal talent:

Tiny Tim - no talent
Huey Lewis and the News - average bar band, at best
Most rappers

Should be more successful:

Cheap Trick
Tinsley Ellis
Good question. There are some just horrific talentless stuff out there who for some reason made loads of $$$. Top of the list has to be bon jovi. Others that come to mind are foreigner, styx, journey, reo. Just vomit inducing stuff. Conversely there are people who have been given some kind of high honor but who have made little money

Good to see ya back, ryanpow!

Without a doubt, hard work is what paid off for the Stones.

But Beiber etc? VOMIT. Let's call it good timing with someone savage enough to shove silly shit down the throats of "young people".

Adele has a great voice - but after 3 songs they all sound the same. But, as it happened with the Stones, it just takes one song.
