I think Keith has been a real bully to Ronnie at points over the years. He's probably taken more abuse than we know.
Maybe it was a really bad overdub or it was one of the performances they filmed on an empty stage, but something doesn't feel right about that part of the song...aside from that, it's some kick-ass playing by Keith, with that cool half-solo/half-riffing vibe that only he can do.
I wish they'd released an official live album of the '93 Winos tour.
Maybe Keith got insecure when he saw Ron do anything independent from him and the Stones. Plus, Keith most likely unleashed all his pent up fury against Jagger on Ronnie. Moe slaps Larry, so he turns and slaps Curly.
Keith is COKED TO THE GILLS here. You can see it in all his fidgety energy, ha.
I saw five Licks shows:
Opening night in Boston 2002
Giants Stadium 2002
Hartford 2002
Boston Jan. 2003
MSG Jan. 2003 (the HBO live broadcast)
and all of them were great. Ronnie was still focused and sober through the HBO show, so I never witnessed him being out of it on that tour.
I went back to the review pages and I'm pleased to see that my reviews for both Boston shows are still posted...so funny to go back and read my words after 15 years.
I saw two shows that tour and both were marred by venue problems which dissociated my experience (bad sound at one and huge cavernous venue at another--I was quite surprised to notice Johnnie Johnson on piano at one point on the jumbotron, for example), although by all accounts the band was very good.

"Fantastic" was meant compared to other solos of Keith in 2016 and not compared to any truly amazing solos
I know a lot of people here try their hardest to highlight clips where he plays decently, but I just don't hear it anymore. His rhythm playing is still capable, but his leads are uniformly painful. It's sad but it's never going to get any better.
If we look past the «showboat»-numbers (Satisfaction and SFTD), there are still some good stuff – also apart from the Berry-ish solos, imo.

Its neither a bad overdub or an empty stage, they had recording problems while making Live At the Max. For those that say that amazing playing on Sympathy at the MAX was an overdub, samples have been shown from different nights on this very thread (if you care to watch) where Keith sounds better on SFTD than on any so called overdub. Proof is in the pudding, Keith really was that good on that tour night after night, especially in 1990. Just saying, its not a personal insult towards you and the rest of iorr, just showing people facts, on this particular tour Keith was at the peak of his powers. He even managed to become a convincing solo guitarist as well as rhythm, he had to , Ronnie was too Stoned most of the time.

Yes, there is Keith with that white Musicman guitar. I forgot that he and Ron played those in 89 too. For some reason that guitar brought out the best in him.
I like the point that Stones4ever raises, if Keith admits the reality of affairs to himself. That he has become less and less integral on stage.
Besides the obvious sibling rivalry with Jagger there is another brother he spars with: Ronnie. Seems like Ronnie doesn't dish it back. Yet, Ronnie grows stronger and stronger. His playing came back with a vengeance, he stopped drinking. He has a very successful life outside of the Stones; art shows and sales, radio show, new wife and twins.

It's great, but the sound mix is SO weird. When Keith starts playing his solo part towards the end, it sounds like he's all alone onstage. His guitar drowns out everything else, including the drums.Quote

There was really only one man on the stage when keith could play like this.
Well into the tour, some of these Tokyo shows were the best in my lifetime from the Stones. The decline in Keith on SFTD almost brings tears to the eyes, its so easy to forget that he was this unstoppable force of nature before arthritis. At least we have all this footage of the great man, no one can ever take that away from him.
