Voodoo Brew CD 3 is the best outtakes set since Some Girls days. But I don't know if Darryl plays bass on these tunes.

Darryl Jones era?

You should at least add songs he played on..

Only Love Is Strong and You Got Me Rocking pass the memorable test. The rest could have been done by a good studio hack. The Love is Strong and You Got Me Rocking are the most Wymanesque of his playing. The rest could be anyone. And Plundered My Soul? You're kidding, right? The best thing about Plunder My Soul is Wyman's rubbery bass.

3-Sparks will fly
4-Rain fall down
5-Out of control
6-The worst
7-Blinded by rainbows
8-Rough justice
9-Laugh,I nearly died
10-How can I stop?
11-Moon is up
12-Just your fool

Shouldn't Bernard and all the other hired side players each have an era named for them?

I wonder how many prefer the Lisa era to the Sasha era for instance.

There's plenty to like about the post-Wyman era, but for bass playing I tend to think in terms of Flashpoint and before.

I prefer the vinyl era myself....they were awesome then

Very few of the songs listed have DJ playing. There are times when I am able to reconcile with the notion of DJ playing Bass in the Stones, but the one thing he is not, is a memorable bass player. He is strictly functional.

He's the bass player The Rolling Stones deserve, but not the one they need right now. So we knock him...because he can take it...because he's not our bass player. He's a silent sideman, a watchful session player. A dark knight.

I was surprised a while back when I came across Madonna's Blonde Ambition Tour show on you tube and saw that Daryl played bass for her then. At the time that show aired on HBO I wasn't paying attention at all. I never realized he was in her backing band.

I am NOT a musician.

I have been a fan since 1965.

I in all honesty cannot tell the difference in bass playing between Bill and Darryl.

Some say DJ has more funk, some say Bill played less. I can't tell. In all, say, 1967 to now songs, the bass sounds just bloody fine.

Pre 1967 I think, like Charlie, Keith and Brian, all the instrumentation was hit and miss - mostly - the VAST majority - hit, but some miss.

Darryl's fine to my ears.

When the Stones did the Camden BBC-show in 1964, there was no miss at all. That came mostly with the drugs.

Bill played more, but more importantly in the right pockets, than Darryl, imo.

Darryl is a root note-player, while Bill has the walking bass-style. Both approaches can be funky.

Who plays bass on Love Is Strong? That to me is an example of a dull, plodding root-note bassline, and Bill coud've added so much more colour and spring to that tune with one of his more inventive basslines.

One of the factors that limits the musical success of Voodoo Lounge is the absence of interesting basslines.

It sounds like Bill plays notes a little bit ahead of when the change comes in the song. It gives the music more movement.

Yeah, I get that, too.
Not a musician myself, so I couldn't tell you what he's doing, but it feels like he plays things going into choruses and such that propel the song.

I get your point - it's really The Rolling Stones from 1993 until 2015, which you should retitle your thread since Darryl Jones did not play bass on every track you mentioned (2 of the 3 BTB tracks especially). That aside, Plundered My Soul has ZERO to do with Darryl Jones and should not be included in such a list/compilation.

And then there's the fact that you included horrible songs: Keys To Your Love, Stealing My Heart, Oh No Not You Again.

There's nothing "wrong" with Darryl's playing. But for a Stones fan since 1965 to not be able to tell the difference?

That's beyond sad. There's a HUGE difference.

I don't care at all actually - it's just astounding that you can't tell the difference.

Perhaps you don't listen like other people, you just enjoy. smileys with beer

Wow, someone just enjoys the music. What a concept. Of course there is a difference. Bill was freaking awesome. His playing on any live recording you pick is stellar and in the pocket but Darryl is a great player as well. Very different but has monster chops and knows when to lay back. I try to not compare, just enjoy what we have.
