Just My Imagination live versions?

A great track on the Some Girls album, but which was frequently taken to another level live. I only really know the Texas 78, Leeds 82 and the (absolutely heavenly) Hampton 81 versions.

What are versions can you turn me on too?

I think they played it at the Echoplex or another recentish club show, but I'm under the impression this has never seen the light of day (although I'd love to be proved wrong!)

They played it in SAL as well. They also did it in Australia in 2014, if memory serves. Both should be on YouTube.

Hampton, second show, is my favourite, but most of the 81/82-versions are great. Cedar Falls. Candlestick Park. Gothenburg. Naples.

I loved it on Shine A Light. But I'm aware I'm biased, cause I was blown away when I saw them do it a month before that. I always liked the song, but was shocked when THAT'S what they started playing and then how good it sounded. So Shine A Light is like an official version of the performance that really blew me away.

They did play it at the Echoplex, I was there, and this is one of my all time favorite Stones songs! A recording of it hasn't surfaced yet. They played it a few times on the No Security tour in '99. Check out the early 1981 versions, before they added a sax player and it was all guitar. Philadelphia and Buffalo versions can be found on You Tube.

There will never be a greater version than Beacon2006/glorious Shine A Light!
Tight, confident and focused, just mindblowing.

The Detroit 2015 version is fantastic! Keith going to the mic with Mick was sublime! Great to see Ronnie doing some backing vocals as well! I as at the show and it sounded fantastic!

Imagination might be the only song played in both '78 and in '81/'82 which actually sounded better in '81/'82. It sounded great on both tours but,in this one case,I would give the edge to '81/'82.

Anyway,as far as "Just My Imagination" goes, outside of '78 to '82, Detroit 2015 wins.

You will be safe with any live version of "Imagination" ..... none are really bad ...... EXCEPT FOR Australia 1995. There's a bad version there,or maybe just a bad recording, but that version doesn't hold up too well against the others.

Blueprints for the truly great 81/82 versions imo.

I think the 78 versions were the best. More guitar driven. I like it without the sax.

LOVED the 78 version. Something about Mick singing " She doesn't F...ing Know Me" I really liked

Absolutely stunning

Yes that 78 Detroit version for me is the definitive version live. Speaking of the line, "she doesn't f..king know me!" He sang that line on the Detroit 2015 version!

Thank you everybody, what a load of great versions. I am surprised they don't dust this off more often, only 2 chords, and (I would've thought) sure-fire crowd-
pleaser

Gotta give my vote to Hampton '81 (I was there), perhaps one of the longest versions ever, with the band locking into a classic guitar weave. But I agree that 1978 without the sax riffing was quite amazing too.

For sake of completeness, I need to mention the No Security B-stage version the second night in Washington DC. That was the closest thing I've seen/heard to the 1978 guitars and I remember being levitated out of my seat facing the B-stage as it built to a final crashing finish.

My first Stones gig was Philadelphia '78 at JFK. I dont remember many things anymore. But I do remember that 'Imagination" rocked. It went on and on, and I really felt like I went to another plain during the song. ( I was also pretty loaded)

My 1st Stones show too.

And I clearly remember the great vibe that went through the stadium during that number. After all the waiting, the rain, the pushing & shoving I remember how good they sounded. A plane passed overhead during the 1st guitar break and I turned around and looked back and saw 90,000 fans swaying to a Motown cover that was barely a week old.

While that show had problems (they messed up a great version of Respectable halfway through, Foreigner played too long, rain, no security, etc,), the show had plenty of high points like Just My Imagination.

"Jut My Imagination" was wonderful 1978-82. The Beacon 2006 was a nice attempt to recapture that glory. Calling it the worst track on SHINE A LIGHT makes one suspect you've suppressed all memory of Jack White raping and defecating on the corpse of the once exquisite "Loving Cup."

Just heard this one (Oshawa 1979 ) - kind of lumbering, but with a certain ramshackle charm..

(Oshawa is not a concert that I know too much about)
