The best B-side?
Posted by: Blueranger ()

What do you think are the band's best B-side of their singles?
As we know, some UK B-sides were transformed to US album tracks, and vice versa - "Play With Fire" and "The Singer Not The Song" are those kinds, so they ARE album tracks tracks in some kind of form.

For reference, here are the unique tracks originally only released as B-side's:

I Want To Be Loved
Stoned
Sad Day
Long Long While
Who's Driving Your Plane?
Dandelion
Child Of The Moon
Let It Rock (later appeared on "Sticky Fingers" Super Deluxe, in remixed form).
Through The Lonely Nights
Everything's Turning To Gold
I Think I'm Going Mad
Fancy Man Blues
Cook Cook Blues
Wish I'd Never Met You
The Storm
So Young (an alternative version later appeared on "Some Girls" Deluxe Edition).
Jump On Top Of Me
I'm Gonna Drive
Anyway You Look At It

Child Of The Moon does it for me. Stunning evocation of psychedelia.

My personal favorite as well. As the true link between Satanic and Beggars.

Ruby Tuesday.

Is it a b-side? Posts about 'bside' typically mean "unreleased on album", or additional track. Ruby is on my USA version of Between The Buttons ... not to mention, i thought LSTNT and Ruby were more of "dual A-sides".

Anyway from the list above, I would go w/ one of these 7, not sure which would be my favorite:
Sad Day
Long Long While
Dandelion
Child Of The Moon
Let It Rock
Everything's Turning To Gold
Jump On Top Of Me

I could probably remove Let It Rock as I prefer the 1978 live versions.

Long Long While

I hardly listened to the A-side of this single because it was on all the lists and was played a lot on the radio anyway ...

Toss up between Let It Rock and Child Of the Moon

My vote goes to:
Jump on Top of Me - Maybe the best track from the VL sessions - love the guitar weave
Who's Driving Your Plane? - Could have fit in on Blue and Lonesome

Honorable mention to:
Let it Rock - It's a live cover so it belongs in another category with some of the live non-album B-sides.

"Through The Lonely Nights"

Followed by "Who's Driving Your Plane"
and of course "Child of the Moon".

It was so good when a single mattered more than the A-side/Hit. And the B-side was a throwaway. We literally had double A-Sides.

OMG, 'Who's Driving Your Plane?' Forgot this song. What a driving blues. I'll give it a best B.

i know it's sappy but i gotta give the nod to "through the lonely nights." got me thru some homesick days when i was abroad at school.

2nd plc tie betw "evthings turning to gold" and "let it rock."

on this criteria, child of the moon would be my choice, always felt it was a bridge between 1967 stones psychodelia and the 68 and 69 rock, blues era.

Woops how could I forget "Let it Rock" and "Everything is Turning to Gold".
This is 'Great B-Siding'!

Let it Rock (a great cover that should be played more often, imho) and Through the Lonely Nights are my favorite B-sides.

Cook Cook Blues and Wish I'd never met You were great surprises when I first heard them.

Now I started thinking about Jagger's solo single w/ "Blue" as B side; a great track.
On the previous album he came out swinging with "Sweet Thing"/ "Wandering Spirit". It's too bad that single wasn't a monster hit.

He also had another B-Side "If things could be different", but I can't remember what the A Side was.

Yeah, it showed up in the long form months later on Let It Bleed, but You Can't Always Get What You Want was the b-side of Honky Tonk Women. There are a lot of other great Stones b-sides, but the discussion of which one is the best b-side begins and ends right there.

The best b-side: YCAGWYW

The best non-album track b-side: Child Of The Moon

WOW!!!!

What a great topic!

Let It Rock has to be the best in my mind, but YCAGWYW is the better song, as it defined a generation.

Still, Everything's Turning to Gold is my absolute favorite among all Some Girls trad, and Who's Driving Your Plane is an absolute smash! And we cannot forget Child of the Moon.

WOW!

ps - Stoned was an A-side in the US, albeit a VERY rare A-side, no?

One thread, where I do not have to read myself up.

My Stones universe relates to the Rolling Stones as a UK band. That perspective determines if a song is a single A- or B-side or an album track. "Ruby Tuesday" belongs to a single release then. How I remember it from 1967, "Ruby Tuesday" was considered a B-side.

As to the question in the opening post, there are three songs that I am unable to choose between. Then my answer has got to be one out of
"Long Long While"
"Ruby Tuesday"
"Child of the Moon"

First heard some of them on the singles collection, what a discovery. Brian Jones preferred Child of the Moon to it's little known A side.
