OT: Shocking Blue

Shocking Blue. Dutch group. In my view they had 2 great songs, Venus and this one. The woman fits the ideal of beauty seen in advertisements and magazines around that time (1970). This I remember. A girl in my class looked almost like this. Hipsters must have discovered them `cause all their albums have been reissued on vinyl, despite inconsistent quality and tacky album covers.

They had many great songs and several great albums -- five in a row in fact. The last one during their initial run (Dream On Dreamer, aka Good Times) was so-so because they no longer had their original founding member, guitarist and songwriter Robbie van Leeuwen.

As their lead singer, Mariska Veres, who joined the group for their second album, 1969's At Home, was such a signature presence and sound of the group that Shocking Blue named their fourth album 3rd Album.

The B-side of the Venus single, Hot Sand, is great as well.

There was a great thread on this not long ago, and in the process of that I discovered this doozy of a tune:

Shocking Blue - California Here I Come

Always loved Venus ever since it was on the radio airwaves in '69 through most of 1970, yet never knew anything else about them as they never had any other hits in the States.

Great band, indeed. And, if I remember correctly, many people called them as "Dutch Jefferson Airplane"...

Here is the discussion we've had
earlier this year, when The Sicilian posted about Shocking Blue.

this thread came as a surprise, cos i just discovered shocking blue a couple of weeks ago on youtube.

so far i have heard about half a dozen really good songs.

sadly mariska verez, the singer died in 2006 at 59 years old.

she certainly was head and shoulders above some of todays so called stars.

This is a brilliant slice of psyche/pop.

I got aware of this band going through the "ti i skuddet" lists from 1969-1970 as I sometimes listened to this program at that time. But I was young, young, very young; 13 to 14 years old. Both their big hits figured in this program, week after week, so I was curious to hear the lesser known of them again. I thought they only had those 2 hits, but no, they were better than that. By the way, what a treasure this site is for all Norwegians:
