Who counts "three, four" in Ruby Tuesday?

During each break between the end of the chorus (after "still I'm gonna miss you") and the start of the next verse (or the closing instrumental playout), you hear one of the band members counting "three, four" in a whisper. Is this Brian or Keith? I would guess Keith, but does anyone know for certain?

Ha, that is proof how little you know, it couldn't have been. That's when Ronnie was the guitarist.

It's Brian.
That critical contribution is what defines the song, gets everybody back in gear, resets the melody and reminds Mick of how to sing.

Oh, I see. Either it's a stupid question or everyone knows but me.

I'm feeling in a silly mood myself today. I should hop on over to the "1981 recommendations" thread and recommend March and April, and maybe even May as well. As I recall it was a lovely spring. And the summer was rather pleasant as well.

Or, more likely, no one has a clue and are just talking trash. I listened to the link (on bad speakers at my office) and I couldn't even hear what you were referring to. I plan on putting headphones on later just to see if I can hear it.

My smart ass answer was going to be along the lines of: "It's Charlie. He's the drummer, it's his job and the fact that they didn't erase it off the track is the reason that, to this day, he refuses to contribute back up vocals to a Stones track."

I think I deserve an "A" for effort even if it is a total bs answer!

I'll admit I'm curious to find out the truth though!

Peace,
Mr DJA

It's on the same side as the drums; you can barely hear it after the first chorus, but you can hear it more clearly after the final chorus.

The acoustic guitar is heard on the other side, which Keith plays. However, there's also that "buzzing" noise, like a bow being used to play an upright bass -- and there is a second bass in the song, one played by Keith and the other by Bill.

Perhaps that "buzz" bass/cello sound is an overdub, and the player of the instrument is counting off when to start the next verse, and the voice of this instrumentalist counting off is what leaks onto the overdub track. This "buzz" bass/cello is also on the same side of the drums and counting voice.

So is it Bill or Keith? Probably Keith, I would assume.

I've heard it forever (the one after the final chorus)...never really thought about who it was.

I've actually wondered this, too. I first heard it in 85 when I bought the London Hot Rocks CD. Not nearly as noticeable on the ABKCO releases back then. I don't like the 2002 hybrid SACD version since it is missing the vocals during the chorus. GRR version has the missing vocals back.
I'm going to assume it's Keith.

Either Keith or Bill, whoever was closes to the mic.
Doubt it's Brian as it'd be hard to count "three, four" with a recorder in your mouth.

When it came out they played an edited version on Ruby Tuesday on Philadelphia AM radio with just the two verses and then the double chorus ending. No third verse.

Wonder if the counting relates to studio syncing for the edit?

Imo it's Keith keeping both himself and Bill in sync for their dual double bass playing.
