Not to be nit picky but he's playing a recorder I believe. Flutes are played sideways like Ian Anderson or Ann Wilson play.
Also, can't remember if it's been discussed here before but when did Bill switch from playing on Brian's side to Keith's side?
I've been curious about this for years. I think it went back to as far as 1965. I always wondered if it was a conscious decision to emphasize Brian more, or to isolate him, or what happened. But once it was done, Bill never went back to that side, ever.
It was pointed out to me that flute is used to describe a recorder in some languages.
Regarding the switch that happened in 1965.
My thinking is it was due to Brian beginning to use organ onstage which took up more space.
My cynical side wonders if it also had something to do with ALO wanting to push Keith to the front more too, putting Bill on Keith's side places Keith more in centre along side Mick.

"Fluit" in Dutch/ Flemish is what's Brian seen holding & playing in that picture, here;
"Dwarsfluit" ( = 'sideways flute'...) Is what Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull plays.
Apart from the swedes and the danes, I'm pretty sure the north east scots-speakers would be pretty close, hehe

It's a well-known instrument here in Germany, called "Blockflöte", which is usually the first instrument kids are confronted with a primary school or kindergarten. Having to hear them exercise simplest tunes can be a doubtful treat to your ears. Is that instrument not common in other countries?

Thanks for the great pictures Christiano. I've listened to Brian's last show in America (Hawii) a great number of time through the years.
I often think of him tenderly, especially because of his swan song as a Stone, in a way, No Expectations.
Particular fan of his harmonica playing; it really had so much fire and rhythm; that old metaphoric railroad train; he was killer at that and leading the rhythm...
it was there that i think he could really just let it soar with The Stones, more than even as a guitarist.

Now, less than fives later, the Brian era tourwise is over... And just think what they accomplished during those years between 1962 and 1967; how many damn shows, albums, hit singles...
Not bad though between 2012 and 2017 ether, at least compared to the five-year period before that
: small tours but big deal shows here and there, two new songs, one album (plus some solo releases by Keith, Mick, Bill and Charlie), a big amount of archive releases...

I've been curious about this for years. I think it went back to as far as 1965. I always wondered if it was a conscious decision to emphasize Brian more, or to isolate him, or what happened. But once it was done, Bill never went back to that side, ever.

Love seeing Keith with that non-reverse Firebird as well! (A guitar more associated with Brian, but also played by Keith; probably in the It's Only Rock 'n' Roll promo video for the last time.)

Thanks, Your Majesty, for explaining. I had seen that word "recorder" above, but it would have never come to my mind it is the English translation of "Blockflote". Therefore I was puzzled what kind of "recorder" the talk was about. Still learning.
