Ranking the B sides
Posted by: Maindefender ()

I've got to do some research, but the Stones have treated us to great B side songs over the years. Studio and live stuff. I'm not ready to rank but some come to mind:

Thru The Lonely Nights
Everything Is Turning To Gold
Think I'm Going Mad
Anyway You Look At It
The Storm
So Young

Cook Cook Blues
Fancyman Blues
Wish I'd Never Meter You
Jump On Top Of Me
I'm Gonna Drive
Under The Radar
Don't Wanna Go Home

That's no ranking

Excuse me, but I had to laugh. So far this thread shows that for some people the Stones are a band that started sometime in the 70's or even 80's. What about Child Of The Moon, Dandelion, Under Assistent West Coast Promotion Man, Good Times Bad Times, Long Long While for example?

lol retired_dog sorry I wasn't really prepared so I just threw out a couple. Wasn't Let It Rock a B side?

Bottom line we've been treated to solid B sides over the years.

Excluding anything from More Hot Rocks and The London Years box:

1. Everything Is Turning To Gold
2. The Storm
3. Wish I'd Never Met You
4. Fancy Man
5. Jump On Top of Me

It would have to be Through the lonely nights for me. Think I'm going mad is pure awesome but way overproduced. Sounds like it's recorded in an airport hangar. The unproduced boot version is pure magic though.

Through the lonely nights
Long long while
The under assistant west coast promotion man [They should have played this onstead of Come together at the Desert concert)

Never listened to 'The Storm' before, what a great tune!

i think like this version more than the released version, sounds more woody/earthy & less processed drumwise

Many songs considered b-sides on UK albums was turned into US album tracks and vice versa. TRUE b-sides, originally only appearing on singles, are these:

I Want To Be Loved
Stoned
Sad Day
Long Long While
Who's Driving Your Plane?
Dandelion
Child Of The Moon
Let It Rock (the only live exclusive, later appearing on Leeds Lungs)
Through The Lonely Nights
Everything's Turning To Gold
I Think I'm Going Mad
Fancy Man Blues
Cook Cook Blues
Wish I'd Never Met You
The Storm
So Young (the 1994 Love Is Strong single version)
Jump On Top Of Me
I'm Gonna Drive
Anyway You Look At It

Technically not a real b-side, but Under The Radar was great when appearing as a bonus track to the reissue of A Bigger Bang...

Yes it was, and I quite liked We Don't Wanna Go Home as well, however I think EITTGold stands heads and shoulders above the rest with Child of the Moon and Think I'm Goin Mad filling out the top 3.

Is there a site where one lists all Stones B-sides? Because I don't know which ones are and which aren't. As a guess (and from the ones I do know were B-sides) I would come up with at least this list of very good songs that I wish had gotten more attention (e.g. a place on an album):

- Stoned
- Who's Driving Your Plane
- Long Long While
- Don't Know Why I Love You
- Anyway You Look At It

All five of them are fantastic.

It seems he didn't mean the b-sides from the "middle ages", many of which are also album tracks.

Thanks Blueranger and Deltics.
In any case, I see most B-sides did end up on albums, so I stand by my previous post listing the songs (all B-sides apart from Don't Know Why) that deserve more attention and are all absolutely great.

1. So Young
2. Fancy Man Blues
3. Jump On Top Of Me
4. Everything is Turning To Gold
5. The Storm

would be my top five when excluding everything that´s on Hot Rocks/Singles Collection. These five songs would have improved any album.

Through The Lonely Lights for me is one of their worst (boring) b-sides ever along with Anyway You Look At It of course. Cook Cook Blues isn´t even a song.
