Can any other year beat 1972? Of course
EXILE ON MAIN STREET – ROLLING STONES
is the crown jewel but what do you say about the rest down here?

Neil Young – Harvest
Stephen Stills - Manassas
Rod Stewart - Never A Dull Moment
Deep Purple - Machine Head
Yes - Fragile
Yes - Close To The Edge
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Genesis - Foxtrot
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Pictures At An Exhibition
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Trilogy
Gentle Giant - Octopus
Frank Zappa - The Grand Wazoo
Focus - Focus III
Santana - Caravanserai
Procol Harum - Live w/th Edmonton Orchestra
Steely Dan – Can’t Buy A Thrill
Allman Brothers – Eat A Peach
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes
Van Morrison - Saint Dominic’s Preview
Gilbert O’Sullivan - Himself
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Uriah Heep - Demons And Wizards
John Lennon - Some Time In New York City
Chick Corea - Return To Forever
Miles Davis - Get Up With It

And, as usual, I’ve forgotten some others…

Would like to add Purple´s Made In Japan.
And John Holm´s Sordin, in the ranking of Exile imho.

1972 is just killing.
But 73 and 71 aint so bad either.
1969 better than 70, isnt it?

Yeah, Baboon, I was thinking at Made in Japan, too. But I avoided live-recordings except "Pictures..." which is different 'cause that was new material that hadn't been released studio before.
You understand what I mean?

A fact to behold is that a lot of these wonderful masterpieces
are recorded in 1971. But as a live- and release year 72 is hard to beat.
As a recording year, I´d put my dime on 71... Cap Ferrat... Montreux...
And wherever ol´ Neil recorded his Harvest (also 71?).

Btw thank you Thommie for your excellent list.
Always nice to see all those put together.
My taste seems to be very close to yours.
I´m sure that Rockman & Gazza & somebody else will add
one or two lost discs too, dont you think?

Yes, I know that the Stones recorded Exile in Keith's wet basement the summer 1971. And I think most of the '72-releases were recorded, at least partly, 1971. Sometimes maybe earlier than that.
But it's getting difficult if you're not going for the release year.

Btw, congratulations Baboon, You seem to have a very good music taste...

Congrat´s too, Thommie smiling smiley !

I´d just wish to add a tiny little album... I just felt there was something missin. Mainly is just that there aint no
Thin Lizzy there... So here´s one -

Mar 1972
Shades of a blue orphanage
Decca Txs 108 [web.telia.com]

And for my more personal taste, I could add Gasolin´ II;
but it isnt the Danes´ best. Still more than ok though.

1968 is the best one! Considering most of Let it bleed, parts of sticky and exile were made then. And the white album. OK, 1969 too.

I agree with you Thommie, as an LP year. I stick to '71 as a MUSIC year though, a year where popular music evolved and "apexed" dramatically all over on so many fronts.

But do add to your list, all tastes considered, the following:

- Zappa, "Waka-Jawaka" (which I actually prefer to The Grand Wazzoo)
- Zappa, "Just Another Band From L.A." (a hilariousl political/zanny chronicle recorded live in concert a year before)
- Joni Mitchell's "For the Roses" (one of her strongest works IMO)
- Pete Townshend's "Who Came First"
- Gentle Giant's "Three Friends" AND
- Gentle Giant's "Octopus" (original release, and not the horrible USA CBS job from '73)

The Byrds - Farther Along
Status Quo - Piledriver

BTW, I think Gram's "GP" came out in 1973?

Lou Reed's Transformer released in 1972

Also, Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything, an excellent disc, and Big Star-#1 Record, a classic.

I just finished reading the Sept. '05 issue of Rock & Folk, in which (besides the very interesting - and long, for him! - Charlie Watts interview, as well as the raving Phillipe Manoeuvre review of aBB ) Roxy Music's debut, self-titled album from '72 is featured in the "La discothèque idéale" chronicle.

1969 to 1972 was the "GOLDEN AGE OF CLASSIC ROCK", no question... and if I'm not mistaken, the band with the most Golden Records or something during this timeperiod was actually Creedence Clearwater Revival...

I think the angst of the Vietnam War AND the proliferation of LSD were probably the two major factors behind the creativity of the day, just my opinion...
It's like rock 'n roll shook itself out of the more "rote" Elvis & Chuck Berry stuff and really got topical and hard-edged during those few years....

As interesting comparison, the "Golden Age of Jazz" was from like 1958 to around 1962 or so, culminating with the great Coltrane recordings in 1961... it's like jazz shook itself out of the rather generic 1950's be-bop and really got spiritual with Trane and Miles' best stuff.

Creedence I would strech that out to include 67-73 just to include the early Doors, all of the late Beatles, Beggars Banquet, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

I've alway's had a fond memory of '72' as being a great year for rock 'n' roll. One that didn't really get much play but is one of my favorites and also a favorite of 'Creem' magazines, they gave it album of the year I think,(anyone remember that mag? I think it was Lester Bangs who liked this record) that year was 'Detroit' (on the MCA label, long out of print) with Mitch Ryder. One of my all time favorite rock 'n roll records. I saw that line-up live that year and it is one of THE best shows I've ever seen. Only about 300 people showed up for the show but every single one of them danced their ass off the entire show. I've never seen anyone, (except Mick at that time) so into the music as Mitch was that night, he was on fire and so was the band, and, let me tell you they could throw down the stuff. The album/band never got any promo from MCA so they just died off. Steve Hunter was the guitar player in the band and went on to fame with Lou Reed, ('Live', with the great versions of Sweet Jane and the song Rock 'n Roll, which was on the Detroit album as well). If you know anyone who has this recording give it a listen.

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.

Nice story, Rank.
No, to me the mag Creem is unknown. In Scandinavia the British papers New Musical Express and Melody Maker were the ones to read at the time.

CREEM was a great magazine, and the first US national mag to cover punk. It came about during the beginning of the glam era and gave lots of coverage to Iggy, Bowie, Patti Smith, Mott, Lou Reed, VU, NY Dolls etc. They recently re-surfaced, although I never see the mag itself and their web site is only sporadically updated.

RO: Lou reed once said that Mitch Ryder's cover of Rock n Roll was the best cover version of any of his songs.

I would pick 1971 personally:

Sticky Fingers
The Who's Next
Led Zeppelin IV
John Lennon Imagine
Marvin Gaye What's Going On
T.Rex Electric Warrior
Alice Cooper Love it to Death
Rod Stewart Every Picture Tells A Story
David Bowie Hunky Dory

Just to name a few

I think that at least five of these consistently end up in the top 20 albums of those best albums of all time polls.

Wow! Somebody remembers CREEM! And yes Karl, Ryder's (Detroits) version of 'Rock 'n' Roll' is tantamount to the grail. Have you ever heard it? It was even better livesmiling smiley
