As far as Led Zeppelin goes....a great band, sure, but highly overrated and not that great of a live band (have you ever heard on bootlegs how often Page is out-of-tune ?).
Honorable mentions: Deep Purple, the Ramones, AC/DC, Motorhead, the Byrds, Elvis Costello & the Attractions, the Band, the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead.

There's just NO WAY IN HELL that Bob Dylan isn't in the Top 5, and no way in hell that the Dead isn't there either. BOTH of them have a more enduring contribution to music than the very serious contributions of Led Zep, U2 or the Who.

R.E.M. is one of the most significant bands of the last 25 years, and certainly one of the greatest American Rock & Roll bands ever.
If you only know them from their post Out Of Time days, it would serve you greatly to listen to:
