Great interview...Keith sounds lucid and in good spirits.

Great interview, thanks for posting.
Although I never understand all this theory about eight-to-the-beat and four-to-the-beat and where the drums plays the hi-hat and all that. I try to pay attention to it when I listen to Chuck Berry or Muddy Waters or the Stones, but I don't hear what they mean. I can hear that it grooves, but I can't hear why.

Keith rarely is lucid in interviewa, he usually is in autopilot becouse he has to answer to the same questions all the time. But if he is motivated his interviewsare are very interesting..

Nice read....I especially liked Dylan's view on the Chuck Berry sound, and Keith's admiration and knowledge of all Chucks music as well...

this may help...

when counting during a measure that is in regular time (4/4)

Keith mentioned old upright players who played four to the bar, it would count this way:

one and two and three and four..but, the player would play mostly only on the
'one'...'two'... 'three'.. 'four'.. not on the 'and' beats..

in eight to the bar, they are dealing with the 'and' beats..

one - and - two - and - three - and - four..

where it becomes interesting is when you play a bit of both..

Ah, that makes it more clear! Indeed, that helps. Thank you.

In the interview, Keith says he ran into Mick while alone in a train car and thats where he spied the albums Mick was carrying. I though the chance meeting was on the train station platform and that the location is now marked with a placard? No big deal really and I suppose memories change with time but I never heard alone in a train carriage before.

Keith has an exceptional talent of (re-)decorating the anecdotes that legends are made of.

He probably got off the train and met Mick on the platform..

That doesn't necesserily means that, in this case, Keith remembers wrong.
The simple truth is that journalists don't always cite their objects rightly.

Well, also Journalists don't seem to contradict the celebs either. They may not know the minutiae of certain events to be fair.....why should they?
Also massaging the ego of celebs, certainly in magazine articles seems to be the norm these days. They need them...to sell copies.

Not to belabor the issue, but what makes it even trickier,is to say "well I took it from 4 count to 8 count; now let me take it to 16". And these are still 'even' beats. You are just fractionizing the beat. You can also hit on a off beat; i.e. to syncopate.

Yo, Glimmerman.

Thanks for the Left Coast feed. That whole paragraph after the Route 66 question reveals the musicologist in Keith. Love it when he goes in that direction.
