Live Versus Studio: Gimme Shelter
Posted by: BroomWagon ()

There is no correct answer here.

I've seen the RS a number of times; and I've seen some of their prime performances on film.

Bedspring Symphony's version is excellent; generally speaking though, I enjoy the studio version.

I don't have much to add on to that, sorry.

I believe there is ... as great as some of the live versions are, nothing comes close to the studio version, which is complete perfection!

The correct answer is - studio.

Studio.

There are lots of live version I enjoy very much. They are excellent.

However, only one version is perfect, and that's the brilliant studio version.

The overall feeling of the studio version tends to get a little lost in concert. It becomes more of a rock song than that of creepiness, fear, danger and that threatening feeling.

What a track! thumbs up

Obviously the Studio version is perfection and it will always be considered that way.
There are some amazing live versions out there that take GS to another dimension, some incredible versions with Mick Taylor playing sublime melodic guitar that stretches the song to greater heights.
But the Studio version is my desert Island disk, i have even insisted it be played at my funeral.

Studio obviously.
I think Lisa Fisher is great and all, but nothing beats the studio version.

I think their live version could be improved by really changing it, turning it into something else. I once saw a live version by Keith at some soul-event a few years ago, where he slowed it down and gave it more of a gospel feel, which could be an interesting twist, although unfortunately that particularly version is a bit too sloppy. Nothing - however - is worse than the abysmally bad version those bloody U2 once did (with Mick Jagger trying his best singing with it, but with a lousy rhythm section and a lousy rhythm guitar like that, it's impossible).

This is a nice take on GS from the man who wrote it and played all the guitars on the studio version. Keith with the Wino's playing this very spirited version that leads to a crescendo at the end.

Gimme Shelter is one of the few tunes I prefer in its recorded version along with Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Women, She's So Cold, Miss You, Let Me Go, Respectable, Star&%# and maybe maximum 3 or 4 others.

I like the Studio version a lot, but nothing beats the interplay between Taylor and Richards, Philly'72. Best version ever, imo.

That's interesting Max i agree with you on all those songs listed above with the exception of She's So Cold, there are a few good live versions out there.

Texas 2006 is a good one

Well yeah I agree it's a great song live as well but I just love that laid back weaving and Kimsey's production. It's less direct and more sublime. The same thing with LMG.

Yep - and the same thing goes for Midnight Rambler. There is an inherent evil vibe that exists on Let It Bleed and which manifests itself wholly on both these songs.

When they are played live, sure they become tour-de-forces, absolutely brilliant transcendental rock'n'roll experiences. They become celebrations but lack the edginess and the foreboding darkness captured in the studio that made these songs so great.

Studio.
The only live version that rivals it IMO is the Altamont version - due to the haunting circumstances of that show... which the song is all about.
There are other classic live performances but studio wins.

What do you mean by reversed, it's Keith left and Taylor right?

You do know that Keith always is in the right channel on live recordings? On the Philly boot he's in the left, and Taylor is in the right channel.

For me the studio version is the floor; as its what the song is suppose to be. The live versions are variations and expressions by the band at different times. My fav live versions would probably have to be London 73 and Philly 72.

Oh yeah see what you mean, it felt weird Keith coming out on the left. just switched my headphones around, result. thumbs up. Damn this version in Philly is smokin hot smoking smiley
How could they let Ronnie replace Taylor, its the difference between night and day, Taylor pushed Keith to greater heights in a way Ronnie wouldn't dare, even if he was capable.

What was it like ? was you aware of history being made, did it feel and look like Rock music had never sounded this good, and that it probably wouldn't ever get any better. I mean Taylor and Richards are on another planet here, way ahead of their time. And to think they were both junkies playing like that just blows my mind.
