See, that is why I think Chuck Berry is so great. Sure he may have borrowed the whatever piano chord thing from Johnny and sure he may have had a one trick sound and sure he may not have filled stadiums and maybe this and maybe that yaddas yadda yadda... but the thing that makes him a GOD... is HE FELT IT AND RECOGNIZED IT AND PUSHED FORWARD DOING IT WITH AN ELECTRIC A GUITAR! And everyone else followed, imitated, innovated and rocked my world... because of Chuck Berry.

Facts be known as a kid, before I could grasp who or what Chuck Berry did, I was rocking to covers of his songs... most probably played better than Chuck played them... but without Chuck playing them first all the rest might never have thought of doing it... and none of it would have happned, Chuck changed the world.

Chuck fkg ROCKED!!!! And Chuck lived to be 90!!! No small task.

So many great covers of Chuck Berry songs exist. AND THAT IS WHY CHUCK IS A GOD!

I wont add my favorites here because I know this board has a rather narrow mindset about who and what it likes and bashes on anything outside that narrow band... but it is safe to say I have been cranking up as many or more great Chuck cover songs and Chuck originals in the last 30 years.

Thanks again to Keef et al for adding to my Chuck knowledge in Hail Hail. As uncomfortable as parts of that movie were to watch, it gave me some great insight to the great man that Chuck Berry IS.

I respect a man who knows how great he is and does not compromise or make nice kissy face for the camera when he thinks he is correct. He stands his ground, no matter if it is another great trying to tell him what is what. Not many men qualify to do that... but Chuck does.

smileys with beer SALUTE TO CHUCK BERRY! smileys with beer

CHUCK !!! CHUCK!!! IT'S MARVN!!! .....
YOUR COUSIN!!! MARVIN BERRY!!!...
YOU KNOW THAT NEW SOUND YOURE LOOKING FOR???!!! WELL LISTEN TO THIS!!

And that is how Marty McFly invented rock and rollgrinning smiley

I know it's the first point of reference for a younger generation who never heard of him before, but for many of us older fans the gag in Back To The Future was not only just dumb, it was an insult to Chuck Berry.

I hated it then, and I still do now.

...because it insults Chuck in a very specific, and some will argue, in a racist way.

Hating hate is a good thing.

Best cover: Rolling Stones - Let It Rock

My 16 year old came to me yesterday and said he needs more Chuck Berry on his phone. Made me proud.

Personally seen the man play 3 times, once under the Arch at the annual St. Louis 4th of July fair in '85 (known then as the VP Fair or Veiled Prophet Fair...long story what that stands for, google it), and both shows at the Fox Theater in St. Louis with Keith.

Also walked right past him at the Paul McCartney concert at the old Busch Stadium in St. Louis in '93, he was sitting a few rows in front of us (we were in the 13th row), which Paul pointed him out to the crowd stating something like he was honored having one of his idols in the crowd watching.

I was in Memphis this weekend when I heard the news, told the guy playing guitar in the courtyard at the biggest bar on Beale who announced to the crowd; it was quite a different mood after that.

And good ole George is still out here rocking, actually on tour right now,
I would like to see him again. He has never disappointed in the 5-10 shows I have seen him

Very few bands can really cover Chuck Berry well. Most end up sounding without groove, boring Las Vegas rock n roll. The big exception of course is - wait for it - the Rolling Stones.
Two of my favourites are Down the Road Apiece from Rolling Stones 2 and Little Queenie from Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. But the winner has to be the latter:

Whereas Chuck Berry's version sounds witty, cool and naughty, the Stones version is dirty, raw and deliciously perverse.

I always liked the Stones's take on this one:

Lots of great guitarists don't get it. Way too many notes and screeching bends. Even Hendrix was OTT with JBG.
A lot of bands did tributes this weekend, but most over played it. I saw an exception with Rod Stewart's guitarists on SWEET LITTLE RnR

Keith knows how to do it .

Keith knows how to play it, and Mick knows how to translate Chuck Berry naughty "nudge nudge know what I mean" into brooding, languid, leering, devilish innuendo.

Hating hate is a good thing.

I thought it was a historical accuracy issue and you thought Marty should be playing a piano to influence Chuck.

Side note: Two wrongs don't make a right. Hating hate is not a good thing.

Peace,
Mr. DJA

Back on Topic:

Not necessarily the best but some of my favorite covers (didn't bother including the Stones, per se):

Bob Seger - Let It Rock - Nine Tonight Version (I wore this one out)

Bob Seger - Let It Rock - Live Bullet Version (I hate the edits on the CD)

Linda Ronstadt - Back In The USA

Linda Ronstadt - Back In The USA Live w/ Keith & Chuck (Does this count as a cover?)

Willie and the Poor Boys - You Never Can Tell

Dion - Nadine

John Hammond - Nadine

Ok that's enough...

To HankM -> Please post your favorites. I get the impression there will be some obscure stuff that will be new to me! Also, I can assure you that, even if I don't like what you post, I'll thank you for exposing me to it!

Peace,
Mr DJA

I liked The Beatles take on Sweet Little Sixteen from the BBC. They really let loose on it on way they never did in the studio (except for maybe the Chuck covers). Would have been awesome to hear them pull this out on their tours.

Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Winter always did justice to Johnny B. Goode.
I remember watching the original Jimi movie/documentary at a theater when I was probably 14 or 15, and was entranced.
Peter Tosh gave it decent and complete reworking with his reggae version.

Dave Edmunds is a Berry acolyte who covered many of his songs both live and on record.

"Let It Rock" is my favorite.
