How good was the great man at playing guitar??

Im surprised Chuck is not ever mentioned among the great players.

This morning, for the first time in my life, I woke up in a world without Chuck Berry.

Yesterday morning was better.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orleans,
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood,
Where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode
Who never ever learned to read or write so well,
But he could play a guitar just like a ringing a bell.

Go Go
Go, Johnny, go, go
Go, Johnny, go, go...
Johnny B. Goode

He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
Or sit beneath the tree by the railroad track.
Oh, the engineers would see him sitting in the shade,
Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made.
The people passing by, they would stop and say,
"Oh, my, but that little country boy could play!"

Go...go Johnny go go...

His mother told him, "Someday you will be a man,

And you will be the leader of a big old band.

Many people coming from miles around

To hear you play your music when the sun go down.

Maybe someday your name will be in lights

Saying 'Johnny B. Goode tonight'."

Without Chuck Berry the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and many others would have sounded a lot different. RIP †

One of the fathers of rock and roll. Maybe the most important one. The private citizen Berry didn't impress me that much though. But that's another matter I guess.

Timeless. I showed my 12 yr old son clips of Johnny B Goode and the Duck walk this morning and he was transfixed. He recognized the coolness.

It's awful when your heroes pass on and I'm as sad today as I was when Elvis and Jimi went.

As many have said, no Chuck Berry - no Rolling Stones, they owe him so much.

There are very few people who can claim to have changed the course of rock 'n' roll. I'm thinking of Elvis, Bo Diddley, Jimi, Lennon and of course Chuck Berry. They are all gone now and I'm struggling to think of any more still alive who would fit into this category. Any thoughts?

The most frustrating thing about Chuck Berry is that, for all his brilliance, he could have been even greater! After writing all those songs in his "Golden Decade," he didn't release an album of new material after the late '70s (Bio). He supposedly has one in the works, but sadly he won't be around to enjoy whatever praises it receives.

And his live shows could have been a lot better if a properly rehearsed backing band was the norm rather than the exception. He sold himself short by traveling solo, playing in front of whatever local yahoos the promoter could wrangle, and checking his watch mid-set to see how much longer he had to play to meet his contractual obligation. If he'd had a steady band, he might have blown Elvis out of Vegas.

Oh really, I think it's in bad taste to start a potential "who's best" on a RIP thread. Let's keep it positive please. They are both great guitarists and even better song writers.

Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis still walk this earth
Both inestimably significant

The great Dion Dimucci still very active and in superb voice
Some very few others as well perhaps

It may have been frustrating for the outside world, but who knows if it was frustrating for him?

He was a very odd man...it's just a shame he lived out his professional life in such a distrustful, embittered, guarded state.

Die-hard music fans know what he means to rock'n'roll, but I feel like his lack of interest in promoting his legacy was a real missed opportunity.

I doubt he could have been bigger... I was listening to the "Complete Chess Recordings (1969-1974)" set and I was struck by the mediocrity of the music. A if Chuck had given all he had during the late 50's early 60's an he entered the 70's completely running out of gas.
The fact that his bigger hit during that period was a cover of the "funny" song "My Ding-A-Ling" (written by Dave Bartholomew btw) says a lot about his creative decline.

I was really looking forward to this. I hope it was complete and that we'll still hear it!

Point taken. Part of that may have been due to the music industry treadmill, i.e., being asked to crank out an album per year when he could no longer maintain productivity and quality control. If he were able to scale back so that he only put out a record of new material every 4-5 years (kind of like Bob Dylan in the last few decades), maybe he could have weeded out a lot of the weaker songs.
