Very few musicians have had their music travel into interstellar space. Chuck Berry is one of them on Voyager I. What's the old joke? What did the first message say from intelligent life in space. "Send more Chuck Berry!"

...one five and six, one five and six and rhythm...and you can do the same thing on the guitar mucy more easy I found...it's a constant background you could sing to it..."
interesting to hear these two talk about the guitar...

A quick anecdote:

My friend Jimmy and I saw Chuck at the Santa Monica Civic in 1983 when we were both 20 years old.
Towards the end of the set, a bunch of people jumped on stage (don't remember if they were invited), and Jimmy was one of them.
Standing right next to Chuck, Jimmy started strumming Chuck's guitar aggressively mid-song while Chuck was playing.
Looking surprised/amused/annoyed at Jimmy, Chuck gave him a forceful hip bump that sent Jimmy flying away to stage right.
I was always envious of Jimmy's moment on stage, and still laugh to this day that he had the balls to attempt to 'play' Chuck's guitar.

Thanks for all the memories and for one of the greatest catalogues of music ever known to man.
A pioneer and the the true KING of Rock and Roll!!!

RIP Chuck.

ps - And thanks for 'My Ding-a-Ling'...my older brother and I played that silly single endlessly in 1972.

RIP to THE father and true legend of rock and roll.

Though I do have to confess to not owning a single one of his records. I love his guitar playing and his songs, but could never warm to, or stand, his voice.

Just played a show last night and both opened and closed our set with his songs. Still a shock even though he was 90. RIP Chuck. Best there ever was.

Chuck Berry reviews Sex Pistols, Talking Heads, Clash and more, 1980.

Chuck, 1980

The Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen”:

What’s this guy so angry about anyway? Guitar work and progression is like mine. Good backbeat.
Can’t understand most of the vocals. If you’re going to be mad at least let the people know what you’re mad about.

The Clash’s “Complete Control”:

Sounds like the first one. The rhythm and chording work well together. Did this guy have a sore throat when he sang the vocals?

The Ramones’ “Sheena is a Punk Rocker”:

A good little jump number. These guys remind me of myself when I first started, I only knew three chords too.

The Romantics’ “What I Like About You”:

Finally something you can dance to. Sounds a lot like the sixties with some of my riffs thrown in for good measure.
You say this is new? I’ve heard this stuff plenty of times. I can’t understand the big fuss.

Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer”:

A funky little number, that’s for sure. I like the bass a lot. Good mixture and a real good flow.
The singer sounds like he has a bad case of stage fright.

Wire’s “I Am the Fly” and Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures:

So this is the so-called new stuff. It’s nothing I ain’t heard before. It sounds like an old blues jam that BB and Muddy would carry on backstage at the old amphitheatre in Chicago.
The instruments may be different but the experiment’s the same.

Just heard about it now. Never seen him and I'm totally saddened by that. The one trinket of happiness for me is when the Stones played "Little Queenie" on the B-stage in 1997 in Buffalo and I was standing on my chair only a few feet from the stage. I loved it and the song sounded great.

RIP Chuck and my condolences to CBII.
