Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives released their new album Way Out West today. Just gave it a listen on spotify as I wait for the vinyl to come in the mail. What a great record. Wait for the Morning is a new favorite of mine. Anybody else here heard it yet?

I saw the Rolling Stones at the TWA Dome St Louis and it was the pay per view show.

Had 2nd row isle seats closest to the center. He comes Marty with his chick being

escorted by security to the very front. He stood there for a few songs then left.

I was pissed at him at the time because he was in front of me. Told him to get the

hell out of the way and the security guy told me to back off.

Never have like him. Guess I will give him a listen.

Excellent musician and (as far as I know) classy guy.

Signs for fans after the show - no ridiculous meet and greet charges either.

Saturday Night/Sunday Morning was excellent.

Mary is a customer of one of my favorite guitar places, Retrofret, in Brooklyn. Kind of out of the way but they have cool stuff and have done great work on some of my guitars and mandolins.[www.retrofret.com]

I'll concur on the 'classy guy' part, at least from my experience meeting him 20 years ago...

I was a staff musician at Dollywood where he was headlining for a couple of days. After my day ended (~4:30p.m.) I cut through the basement of the main theater where his shows were taking place to head for the musicians parking lot. As I left the building, I see him by himself, leaning up against his tour bus (he had just finished his matinee show). Much to my surprise, he started a conversation with me. For the next 10 minutes we were just two musicians hanging out, talking shop in the parking lot. To this day, I honestly believe that, if he had been leaving that night or we had been scheduled to play the following night that he probably would have directed his bus driver to stop on the way back to Nashville so he could sit in with us. Thumbs up from me to someone who could have easily been "a celebrity" but, for the 10 minutes I was with him, was as "normal" as anyone you could imagine.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Agree with statement above, he's the real deal re country (and other) music. His "The Pilgrim" album is superb. His spiritual album, Soul's Chapel, if I recall the title right, is country gospel soul with some wicked guitar playing. He put out some photo books showcasing Nashville and country artists which used his own photos.

I'll see him for the first time tomorrow.

His music is ok, but I always saw him as a poor man's Dwight Yoakam.

One of my absolute favorites ! He and his band are incredible-- had to great fortune of seeing them a couple times live and was just blown away-- they play all genres of music effortlessly: hard core country, bluegrass, Gospel, rock and roll, surf ( yes surf ) music--all top shelf ! His band is Superlative and I could listen to them all night-- they also have done some killer cover versions of Tom Pettys "Running Down a Dream" (done Bluegrass ) and the Who's "I Can See for Miles "
I cant wait to pick up his new one today-- been looking forward to it !

I also love Marty Stuart. Saw him twice in the last year including last Saturday.
I like the new one (produced by Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers). It's very unique sounding with several instrumentals.
Love Saturday night/Sunday morning & the Pilgrim.
I have nearly all his albums but I don't have Cool Country Favorites.
Can anyone help me with that, PLEASE?

A poor mans Dwight? Not even!

Yoakam and Stuart are apples and oranges but if one insists on a comparison, Stuart has been around much longer than Yoakam despite being two years younger. Yoakam is 60 and his frist record came out in 1986 while the 58 year old Stuart got his start in 1972 at the age of 14 with Lester Flatt.

Yoakam is no slouch, but along the way, Stuart has built up quite the pedigree. Played in Johnny Cash's band, married Cash's daughter, divorced her, and later married Connie Smith, a pioneering country singer 17 years older than him. He's also player with Travis Tritt, Riders in the Sky, Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, Vassar Clements, Doc Watson, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. He once recorded an album for Columbia that didn't get released for years because he was upset with them for dropping Johnny Cash. In addition to playing a great guitar he also is a well respected fiddle player.

A poor man's Yoakam.
I don't care how long he's in the business.
I might see the light after tonight (he plays the o2).
Actually I can see him at this very moment signing stuff.

Connie Smith is his wife since 1997, she is the singer of "Cincinnati, Ohio." Great song written by Whispering Bill Anderson, she has to be quite a few years older than he is.

Looks like a good album, in the past, I did not appreciate his own penned-songs that much but will give it a listen. Tribute, in part at least, to Bakersfield too, it sounds like.

"Way Out West" is well reviewed at All Music.

Connie Smith who sang Cincinnati cerca to 1967; just like some of the Stones songs.

Country music really was a lot better back then in general.

I saw a movie where Dwight Yoakam played a supporting role, it's a World War II movie. It made me wonder why he was in that role. I mean, he did it well enough. I just wondered if he was trying to launch an acting career.

I wouldn't compare the two, they both are fine. Yoakam has penned some decent numbers but it is curious how many covers both of them do.

You can keep saying it, doesn't make it true.

Moreover, since Marty had been at it for years before Yoakam came along, calling him that makes no sense. It's like saying the Who is a poor man's U2 or Springsteen is a poor man's Mellencamp.

And... to put Marty ON Topic, let's not forget Shake Your Hips off his '94 album Love and Luck.

If you like two guitars (which of course, we do), Marty and Cousin Kenny V. are as good as it gets.

C'mon, somebody's gotta be able to help me with Cool Country Favorites.

Another nice cover was The Weight.

Bowiestone, how was the show?

His version of The Weight is part of my permanent music mix. And, for my hometown, he, and I think it's Jim Lauderdale, do a nice duet of Streets of Baltimore.

Re Marty and Dwight, both are old school country, but I'd give the nod to Marty re who is more steeped in traditional country. Re Dwight, does anyone remember him as a bad guy in a bad movie - Panic Room - starring Jodie Foster? On another note re Dwight, IMHO, I find his work with Pete Anderson much better than anything Dwight has done since they parted ways. But this is a topic for another thread - who lost their way after leaving the folk(s) who helped made them successful.

Oh, another thing re Stuart - he's one helluva mandolin player.

Bowiestone, how was the show?

Well, if you want to kick off a Marty Stuart album collection: don't start with a Greatest Hits. That's not what he stands for. That's what I learned today.

Great show. Great band. He can learn a thing or two from his great idol, Dwight Yoakam, about songwriting though.

No, really terrific show. Especially for a Yoakam wannabe.

No, agreed. Dwight approaches country music quite different. But on the other hand, they both know the history.

if you get a chance to see this band, the Superlatives, they are great, its an awesome show.

Kenny Vaughan, with Marty Stuart, are simply amazing guitarists.

Marty Stuart often plays the Clarence White B-bender ..

Harry Stinson is a great drummer. The bassist is new, Chris Scruggs. He's a

guitarist as well. Kenny Vaughan said he was the best guitarist in the band, by far..

im looking forward to getting this new record.

The quality of his albums hasn't dropped the slightest bit since Pete left.
Actually 3 Pears & Second Hand Heart are even better than the last couple of albums he recorded with Pete.
He was vital to his career and a hell of a player, but I don't miss him, Dwight continues to deliver each and every time.

I've been listening to the new album a lot since I picked it up last Saturday-- really good..... it reminds me in some strange way of Willie Nelsons 'Red Headed Stranger"....the vibe.....and the way its sequenced.....
its really well done....the record company is hyping Mike Campbell as the producer, but its pure Marty Stuart......and the Superlatives , of course. They are an amazing band....
