Stranger things have happened of course...Bring on "Mister Felder" as Don Henley referred to him in the "Eagles history" movie.

As for the Mac, isn't Stevie on a solo tour or something and too busy to participate in a new studio album that will have to be called Buckingham/McVie instead? Although these days of course she can probably make as much money from two shows than from the sales of an album and for a lot less work.

I'll believe the Eagles part of this when I see it. Deacon Frey is likely a nice kid, but he's nowhere in his Dad's friends' league. Not remotely close.

I'm with you. Only way I could see it happening is if they try to spin it as Glenn Frey tribute shows, with special guests like Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, his son, etc. I'm guessing that's how Henley would justify it in his mind, despite what he said a few months ago. As a longtime Eagles fan, I could do without it.

Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Journey, Steely Dan and more have all been confirmed to perform at new festival ‘The Classic’. Full dates and ticket details are below.

Rumours and reports of the new event emerged earlier this month, but now Fleetwood Mac have confirmed that they’ll be performing at the festival alongside The Doobie Brothers and Eart, Wind & Fire.

They will perform at the Classic East and Classic West two-day festivals in July. The first event will be held on July 15 – 16 at Los Angeles’ Dodgers Stadium, followed by Classic East from July 29 – 30 at Citi Field in New York City.

Earlier this month it was also reported The Eagles would also perform without the late Frontman Glenn Frey for the first time since his death, according to an industry insider. Drummer and co-vocalist Don Henley said the band would never perform again when Frey passed away last year, but he appears to have changed his mind.

I would pay to see Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan again (which I'm seeing next month in Santa Barbara), but could care less about the rest.
The Eagles will be as boring live as they always have been, no matter who they get to fill Frey's shows. Some great songs indeed, but sterile and boring live.
I saw the Doobie Brothers in 1980, and they were already diluted and weak - some great songs, but no thanks.
Saw Earth Wind and Fire about 10 years ago (or whatever was left of them), and while I like alot of their songs, the entire concert was akin to seeing a bad tribute band.
I've never seen Journey and never will unless I'm paid at least $100 for my precious time, along with transportation to and from the show - preferably a limo stocked with beer.

Needless to say, this 'event' is not something I will be attending.

As an Eagles fan, I don't care what they are doing. I'm not a diehard, so its not like my life is forever rocked by it. But I do think they've set the new low bar for what a MAJOR band will do to continue and I have lost respect for them. I won't stop listening to them and I won't forget their legacy, but bravo gentlemen, you've achieved full sadness.

The Eagles without Glen Frey is a bit like the Stones without Keith. Not interested.

Its exactly like that because he added nothing to the overall sound but was a necessary face to be there.

Lol I hope you don't mean its exactly like that because Keith adds nothing to the overall sound of the Stones, that is an outrageous comment. Keith is the overall sound of the Stones.

To say that Keith adds nothing to the sound of the Stones is equivalent to saying that water adds nothing to the existence of life.

Lesson one: Keith is the overall sound of the Stones.

I'll add "live these days and arguably the last 20 years." But otherwise, no thats a completely correct statement. I go to see him there. I don't go expecting him to add solos and great guitar parts. I need to see him on stage, playing the riffs, and thats it. Anything else he does is icing. If you go to a Stones show and expect to see anything more from Keith, I envy you.

These days, Glenn was simply a figurehead of the band. He wasn't Henley who sang most of the songs, he was usually playing acoustic guitar or rhythm guitar which added very little. But he was a key founder of the band, sang some of their seminal songs, and was essential to actually seeing "the Eagles". The Eagles was Don Henley and Glenn Frey, just as the Stones are Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Everyone can moan about how they'd stop if Charlie left. If Charlie died 20 years ago we would still be seeing the Stones today because the Stones Mick and Keith. Thats not meant to piss people off, and it may not be your viewpoint. It may not be my viewpoint. But its the truth.

I could say the same of Mick, the guy can't sing Rock anymore, he gets by on a few ballads but his voice is greatly diminished, but i wouldn't put out a blanket statement like Mick adds nothing to the overall sound of the stones.
I mean Keith still plays just about every signature opening Riff to most Stones songs live, that alone makes him half the overall sound even if he cocks up every solo, plus he co wrote the whole deal and has one hell of a stage presence.

Mick Jagger is the consummate professional performer that gives 110% every god damn show and sings his ass off for even their crappy songs. If they're playing Emotional Rescue, the man will give it his all. He also is actually still reminiscent, at over 70, of the man he was in his 20s. There are an insanely short list of people that are like that and he is usually the top. Mick Jagger is the single reason the Stones still continue. Mick Jagger isn't even my favorite member of the band and I feel completely comfortable saying that. To pretend Keith Richards does a FRACTION of the work Mick Jagger does in the last 20 years is laughable and we all know that. Mick does at least 3 times the work Keith does, and thats not a knock on Keith. Again, its just the truth. But for the Stones to be the Stones, you need Keith there to provide his bit. I don't see why thats enraging people. The comparison to Glenn Frey is shockingly on point.

Well you do explain yourself well when you want to. I agree Mick does a very good aerobic workman like gym session of a performance, and so that's it, that makes it alright for Mick to cash in on over priced tickets to see a man of 72 on HGH. Because he can run around the stage that justifies him creatively. So you are saying effort makes up for everything. Perhaps Usain Bolt is better qualified to sing for the Stones in that case.
By the way , the last two shows the Stones performed, the second Desert show and Vegas when Mick had voice problems Keith put in 110%

Not at all. I'm one of the few people on this board that actually says people are f*cking crazy to pay those prices. Its insane. Its not like you're seeing them in their prime. You're paying millions of dollars to see a Vegas act version. One done very well, but still Vegas. Usian Bolt? What the hell is your argument? That any fit man could do his job? No, thats not the point, there's only one Jagger and is still damn close to how he used to be. There's only one Keith. That man ain't the same guy you were seeing in 1975. And thats fine with me, but I guess it bothers you and others. Neither are creative. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards haven't farted out creativity since Start Me Up.

well this is hard to hear. but i appreciate you expressing your take on this.
i have often thought along similar lines but there is so much punch power and prowess in their first ten years as a signed act releasing records that I end up forgiving everything and making excuses for anything a lot of the times. i also don't want to spoil the party for someone in the throes of a different stage of fandom, or of a different generation and age and this is the best that they can close to; i mean outside of watching "Ladies & Gentlemen..."
...then again, i don't want to overestimate my tiny personal power to affect anyones opinion or experience...theyhave their own ears and hearts and need for the big beat....
... and in LAUDING what is truly truly GREAT and eternal about the catalog is a kind of mini-mission amidst all the... well, let's just say more half-hearted, or instutionalized kind of efforts in the wake of the accruing decades and hundreds of millions in crazy money....
i think for me the sometimes frustrating thing is I DO believe there is a LOT of talent ability and spark in them still. all of them...but it seems they do the best to kind of avoid that, not being an actually together kind of working/recording outfit. those little bits backstage at ole (country honk) show so much natural ability and soul; and it's so easily casually done....
...but so very far away from the vibe they are creating on the big show, tho obviously Mick has charimsa that just never quits and he's the master of entertainment on that level of spectacle etc...

(btw...if some toronto girl thinks Steely Dan is a good show, I'll stand corrected on that; they are not my favorite but i totally trust her instincts and ear)....

i will forever be grateful to the writers of Big Lebowski and Jeff Bridges for just finally saying it....i think if memory serves me well his character was risking death by auto, willingly, to rip that Eagles cassette out of the slot in the car stereo. I felt proud to be an American that day.
It was the funnest guilty pleasure. Honestly I'll admit to having really loved, almost adored 'doolin and dalton' and 'out of control' and the very earliest things from them. I thought Don Felder a totally wonderful blazing addition; i WAS sort of into them; it took a lot of encroaching stiffness and an almost arrogance by them or something...to just get me off of them entirely. by the time of Hotel California I pretty much had come to almost actually hate that kind of smooth uber cultured California shlock....the wonderful rise of those early countryish rock and roll outfits from California, or at least forming and debuting there....were over for me....the delight I took in those super great first Jackson Browne things, and the great great players on Linda Ronstadts stuff, had gone pale on me by them; and I was her hugest fan for a long time before she even got super big; I loved where she was coming from; those great musicians and producers...her Stone Poneys hit with that Mike Nesmith song; I had tons of respect for Buffallo Springfield, certainly The Byrds, maybe even Poco, certainly The Youngbloods and all that...at first The Eagles so refreshing and so really crisp and great.

I liked Lone Justice in their turn, even The Monkees, certainly The Beach Boys; and northern CA bands like Creedence or Airplane were certainly bandfs I adored and never missed a release from....
but those early gram parson era souther ca guys were great, including all the songwriting and playing; just really masterful for a bunch ofyoung guys was what I thought when first hearing The Eagles; just how and when and why it turned to middle of the road worst radio fodder to me, I'm not sure...i reallly loved their first hits and the whole vibe; I never thought I would NOT like them, never mind grow to actually kind of resent the whole shitty thing they were spawning....but i guess that's my personal issue....at first I was a fan; i felt somehow they themselves beat that out of me...weird....

By the way, 'Earth, Wind, and Fire' are playing in Southern California at the Pechanga Casino resort (capacity 1200) two nights in June - plenty of seats still available. How they fit in with this festival is a mystery.
As for the Doobie Brothers and Journey, I thought they were on the County Fair circuit playing alongside the clowns and circus freaks?

Tickets better be really cheap for this festival, otherwise it's going to be a huge failure. Only Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan can save the day, but that's not enough to save an entire weekend of bottom of the barrel acts.

Eagles were Glenn's band. It's not Eagles sans Glenn. It's not worth seeing. I don't care much for the other bands, either. The bands involved all just happened to have mega-selling albums that enabled them to have higher-tier oldies touring careers. But they are really not that much better than their peers who play cruises and county fairs. Certainly not at the ticket prices for the highest priced packages for this event.

Frey stopped adding anything worthwhile with the Long Run album. Creatively he was spent for good. His solo career was forgettable, even with his 80's specific hits. Notice in Eagles shows they've played more than a few Henley solo songs but precious little if any Frey solo stuff. It was just that lightweight.

Frey founded the band, was its driving force and often its worst enemy (see Felder). His excesses brought on the physical problems that caused his death. While he did not overdose, one could plausibly still argue drugs killed Frey by attacking his internal organs and causing them to gradually erode and shut down earlier than they otherwise would have.

All that said, no matter who replaces him, whether Vince Gill or J.D. Souther or Jackson Browne or his too young and inexperienced son singing his songs is ludicrous. Many of them were personal and will become artificial if anyone else does them. If none are done at all, then it's a Henley solo show with a few Walsh tunes thrown in for good measure. However, is it an Eagles show without Tequila Sunrise or Take It Easy or Lyin' Eyes or New Kid In Town or Heartache Tonight or Peaceful, Easy Feeling or Already Gone? They're damned if they leave them out and damned if someone else does them. The best thing to do is not do this at all.

What Long John Stoner said is exactly my thoughts. Just play Henley and Walsh tunes and let Jackson Browne do Take it Easy, and one of his solo songs and be done.
