I wonder if we stones fans exagerate about the quantity and quality of the vaults. There could be a lot less unknown footage and recordings than we think.
Bill might have used the best available footage. Which is logic as it is his film. So...there may be not much else to be discovered. Sad? Yes. But...such is life.

Well, only Bill can really answer your question.
And he has not exactly drowned out the Media with PR and Marketing (interviews).
Maybe he was concerned that the Mandy issue would be dragged up, but there are plenty of journals out there who would focus on the Archives and not the tabloid stuff.
Record Collector and Mojo in the UK come to mind.
He could also use his website: Ask Bill or something similar.

Was or is Bill allowed to show all the things he has photographed or filmed to release in a documentary ?

Let's assume he filmed a footage of a song from the After Math sessions in '66 is he allowed to release it?

His own personal 60's 8mm films are all probably without sound.

The Stones were not covered anywhere near as extensively as the Beatles in the 60s. Now we think of them as the second greatest band of all time, but it took them until the 70s to achieve that.

Not sure in which country you are born.....but in my country in the 60's they were the second greatest next to the Beatles ...and yes your right about the 70's.

good to know you can see it from home already!!
ty.
I can rent it for almost seven bucks even tho i'm amazon prime currently.
gonna do it when i can sit still for a bit. looking real forward to it.
tonight or this week i hope. Stones birthday is Friday; so is our Rockman!

i'll just post my critique right now before I watch it; based upon
other fan's responses here. More Stones live footage focusing on Bill.
THATS what it's all about at Core.
That being said, I'm ready for even a sleepy little doc, i expect a degree
of 'revisionism,' due to either maturity or not wanting to say 'yes i was as big a pig as i could possibly be, and even counted like a maniac...including
formulating tables with counts of the other members, excuse me, score cards,
so to speak.

if it's historical and nice and sleepy; that's ok;
i'll sleep. he does fascinate me; a real 'crazy bill' cartoon should come out tho.
all that magic wand crap finding pennies in the sewer; and he's a millionaire; i mean Peter Sellers would have killed as Bill; who can we get?'

there are times i so deeply mourn the passing of the Monty Python Television show.

The Rolling Stones Icon Unloads After Surprise Firing

nothing that will surprise all the fans I learn from and enjoy here,
and i'm personally tired with the everyday "headlines' in 'news services'
like Alternative Nation; I've never really looked into them and a Lot of the
every day click-bait 'headlines' might reflect newer generations fascinations
with stuff that is history peeps here from teens to eighties have lived with
and thought about.

still, here it is....
"The Rolling Stones Icon Unloads After Surprise Firing"

unloading is he?

my fave part:
Wyman told Yahoo, “It really had nothing to do with me, it was down to them. It was down to what was going on with Keith, Brian, and Andrew [Loog Oldham]. Clearly, [drummer] Charlie [Watts] and I were just the rhythm section; we were there to do our job and lay the foundation for everyone else, and that’s what we did. We did it very efficiently and conscientiously. We were always on time, we were always well-behaved, we were always straight, and so the basics went down.”

---

and sadly, after expressing some initial closeness to him and rooming with Brian...
(see the whole piece i'm pasting short impressions) --
...

"I was never aware of him ever taking heavy drugs. It was always painkillers with alcohol and sleepers. He used to take sleepers and then take alcohol and stay awake on it, so he would be stoned and all that kind of stuff. So, that was about ’67 when I kind of lost the closeness with him, I suppose.”

I've rented it and was watching in excellent vid quality via the rental thru amazon in usa.
I stopped at the hour mark with about an half hour to go till it's ending, as I've a late appointment,
but it will be available for me for a month.
These are impressions; I'm not a reviewer but a fan.

I watched the first half hour twice in a row.
For me, it was that good. That sensitive, that 'proper' for a lack of a better word,
as to how this project was approached; and how much power
and fact it could offer in an interesting manner.
I love this band and they have been part of my life
for almost all of it; i'll be 68 on Friday.
I thought the producers found the exact right 'note' and approach....

...you know me, i go on and on...
...suffice to say it impacted me deeply
seeing those very first still shots that Andrew had arranged.
The very first ones,
One of which I mentioned here in several posts about Wyman,
not ever knowing the history of the shot.
(Nor did I know anything about his family life and thoughts about military service).

I think it was the last of the Group Shots in the that flicker of clips
of those sessions after Andrew sets up the shoot.
THAT was the FIRST time i ever saw the band. or heard the name.
I was DEF gonna buy that album when it came out; and did.

I hadn't even heard them yet
and THAT picture, and yes,
tho not to the exclusions of the others necessarily at all;
but it was Bill's big Open Eyes and direct solemn, well, Stone Face,
that knocked on the door of a 12 year old boy.

it's a picture that tells a thousand stories, it impacted me in
ways no other pictures in that magazine did; other than the color cover
of the beets with a brick wall behind them early on.

i hadn't heard The Stones yet, but i swear to you that picture
communicated more solemnity and reality than
the standard press shots in the Beatles mode.
(Andrew again actually, both bands PR; and same photographer.

imo the first half hour is more than essential.
It's very basic stuff one would have to know to really 'get' them on a personal level
that is extremely meaningful, imo.

sigh; i'm longing to share about it and will try
for fun to come up with a cogent short review
after i watch the first part again; which i will do when done with the last half hour.

i'm just talking of the first half hour now;
all my fears that there would not be enough of a feel or
presence of actual Rolling Stones performance excitement were alleviated.
Yes I wanted the entire Hyde Park Concert
not just the beautiful first few
bars of the opener which I never heard or saw like that before....
and etc....but it was there. it glosses; it has to; it's an hour and half long.
it was worth the seven bucks the first few minutes and i'm a big fan of
just turning things off within fifteen minutes if not engaged; regardless
of how much I paid or how long it took to get it, or get there to see it.

what an amazing, amazing man.
He's so very different from the rest of them other than Charlie and Stew. of course,
i wanted more detail about everything, but i'm a crazed fan.
For me, those first thirty minutes are more important than Exhibitionism
and a whole lot of their entire concert films...

....it's hard for a fan like me on this site to judge cause
i want more
of every little detail.....that first half hour is glorious,
important and essential to understanding what this music is
and where it comes from,
and a large part of how it came together.

....just the story of having his bass cut down.

Beautiful movie if a little painful here and there...
a truly lovely and unique man; i'm glad this story was told.
i haven't read any of his books yet; i'm just crazy for his playing.
That footage of Dunn getting down on bass was INTENSE.... !!!!
Very hip editors; great feel these film-makers. nope i ain't seen the last
thirty as Chagall and that stuff happens...
i don't think any real Stones fan should miss the first half hour of this in any case.
IT'S THAT GOOD, imo. and may be the Best thing yet that's out
in film docu form about those earliest years.

Good question.
I'm sure there are people on this forum who are conversant with copyright and licensing issues.
I haven't seen the film yet but assume the credits should detail what permissions etc were obtained.
I would have thought the parties involved would be:
1. ABKCO
2. MICK/KEITH/CHARLIE..

I cant see a problem with 2.above (Charlie has done new interviews for the film).
ABKCO might be a problem and Bill was certainly very clear about his dislike and distrust of Allen Klein. Son Jody though seems more flexible.

@hopkins, I believe once you start watching you have 48 hours to finish. At least that's what my Amazon page says: "Rentals include 30 days to start watching this video and 48 hours to finish once started."

Fantastic! Great save, thank you. I'll watch the last half hour tonight!!
I'll likely watch the First half hour again first. I've already seen it twice,
those first 30 minutes. Misread that '30' day thing; thanks.
i started watching it as soon as i rented it; the first thirty minutes
or so are among the very best documentary rock and roll film jobs I've
ever seen on a major star.
-----

And LOTS of great Stones music it seemed.
some from their very best album ever, Buttons!!
and stuff i hadn't seen before; aawww, Bill. what a character.
of course as a fan here i wanted to hear each song all the way through,
but it's a 90 minute doc.

that duck Dunn clip they used is something i'll never forget.
no rhythm player should miss that; how stupidly simply that move is,
but how sensitively he works it then crunches then bears down and almost
slams the thing, standing in one stop; just his head almost violently
in lurching in time with that riff, he's watching Sam and Dave, taking
cafe of the Front; doing almost nothing and it's everything. Bill.
Except Bill, imo, could do stuff even a virtuoso genius like Stanley Clarke
wouldn't have thought of pushing like that.-------
--
like some of that fast rolling stuff Bill did on those up tempo numbers
was just extraordinary. I often recall Bukowski's '75 crushing critique/review
; how he thinks Bill's the only professional level player; lol; and
that he also had praise for Charlie but not so much the rest of them....
mick got slammed for wearing 'pajamas' with 'shoe laces' tied at the bottom.

....I'm so glad this film was made so well.
I'm slightly less interested in some of the post Stones Bill stuff.
the Brian stuff was heartbreaking; a lot of stills and little home movie
clips I'd never seen.

Another interesting screenshot from "The Quiet One".

If it's genuine it claims to be from the Musicians Wanted pages of Melody Maker dated August 18, 1962.
Apparently this is the ad that Tony Chapman responded to.
Note the Dartford phone number, I've always suspected that Mick's was the only family with a phone.

This is interesting but I think incorrect. Chapman played at least two gigs with the Stones one month before this ad came out. So he couldn't have responded to the ad as how met the Stones. I interviewed Chapman two times about his history on meeting the Stones and what gigs he played with them. The July 12th was when he first played with them. He was away and they were going to have Mick Avory fill in but he contacted Stu and said he could be there so they told Avory they didn't need him. I also interviewed Avory and he confirmed Chapman's story. Avory said he got a call the night before the show and was told he was not needed as their drummer called and could make the gig.
I also wonder if this MM ad is one that Brian placed for the Stones as they
used Stu's work number for people to reach the band or in the Jazz News P.O.
box # that they were assigned to be reached. Also the Melody Maker ad may have been over their budget at the time.
I don't live in the U.K. but Jagger's home phone # is probably listed in the 1962 Darthford phone book that the library may still have. They did have them (old phonebooks) in the 70's when I was in the U.K. doing research. This could
confirm if it is Jagger's home phone # in the MM ad??

I liked Bill's film but I wish he would have used more of his rare footage (home movies) and rare stuff he got from Whitehead's collection. I also thought
he just flew by the 70's. I wish he would had spent more time on the band in the 70's and less on his wedding footage (IMHO)
I also was surprised M. Taylor & B.Jones didn't get a better credit in the end and I saw no credit (thanks) to Stu. Maybe I missed it????

Thanks James. Did Chapman indicate how he knew of the Stones and how he knew they were looking for a drummer?
All old UK phone directories are available from Ancestry.co.uk so if anyone has an account with them they might like to do a search: [www.ancestry.co.uk]

I meant the Stones are now considered the 2nd Greatest Band of All Time. And that didn't really emerge until the early 70s. Jimi Hendrix died, and he was a major headliner. Duane Allman's death in 1971 might have prevented the Allman Brothers from taking over as the Greatest Rock and Roll Band. Led Zeppelin were fabulous, and immensely popular. They simply didn't have the staying power of the Stones. Same with the Police. I lived in Indianapolis growing up, before I moved to Atlanta, and later to Los Angeles. No one was ever considered greater than the Beatles. Anyone who lived through that period remembers the mania and interest as being far beyond what came before, or after.
