Also, by going on and on about the marriage and courtship that took place 40 years ago,
it seems disrespectful to Mandy, who 10 years ago went on national TV and shared how she’s grown from it, takes responsibility, and is at peace.
Right, let’s leave her alone now. Maybe Bill’s kids are tired of it too.
Some of the reviews for ‘The Quiet One’
lament more time not given to the Mandy Smith relationship eye rolling smiley
40 years ago, examined and done. Yes, the 80’s were crazy. Next.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you bring up the case almost each time when you're posting in this thread...at least the last couple of days...that keeps the fire burning...by intention or not...

With the release of ‘The Quiet One’ finally showing a few days ago, title of thread, where my interest lay,
correct.
But the 40 year ago relationship cannot be separated, try as it might.
It’s in every review, shaming and gossipy.
But, this is 2019, where salaciousness sells. Need a grabby headline, with a good looking younger gal to get the clicks/ attention.

'The Quiet One' has seemingly turned in to a Hornets Nest ever since it was pulled from the film fest.
_____________________________________________________________________

As for the doc itself, not really getting the best reviews overall, but as a Stones fan I still look forward to seeing it some day.

Via the Wrap: Bill

‘The Quiet One’ Film Review: Reticent Rolling Stone Bill Wyman Shares Little of Interest in Documentary
Tribeca 2019: This dull portrait negates all the flamboyant, interesting tidbits we associate with the legendary rock band

"Not everything should be turned into a movie — certainly not the recorded diary entries of an aging rock star who can barely find elements in his story that are worth sharing with the world".

And via Variety: Bill

Tribeca Film Review: ‘The Quiet One’
"Oliver Murray’s music doc curates former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman's history and home movies, but reveals little about the man himself".

"...the stories in “The Quiet One” are the oft-told Stones lore: the desire to be a blues band and not rock ‘n’ rollers, the drug busts, the exile to France over tax issues, and the stadium tours of the last four decades".

i listen to some isolated tracks of bill.
it's sort of almost clumsy; even on classic tracks when isolated.
this sorta fascinated me cuz i figure it's his presence, his band as
much as any other foundation member in terms of the 'Whole' of what their
amalgamation of other amalgamations, so to speak, but that 'magic' thing that
the entire cultural seemed to understand, promote to others and want in their lives; real excitement , real sparks, real rooted and there's bill and charlie....
i still contend that their earliest deal offa doing club shows was because
people had to MOVE, and it was a big beat. There's a thread here about
American bands; but the UK invasion was, and is, significant to me in most
every frame of reference since i focused more on a cheap Fender electric,
away from acoustic folk...cause i was pretty sure i could nail one chord
like Pete Townsend and just hold on to the feedback until i had to bash the thing again. sort of a prehistoric approach; it's a wonder i didn't go the rest of the way with it and toss it up into the air and walk away while dropped; i wished i was that cool; i know i'd bean myself, lose the instrument, then dad was gonna be very interested in the chips in the tile he laid, so...good parenting save me i guess;
bill is the unique eagle with wings in both decades as an adult while the others, super fans and already deeply informed as any of the young bluesy invasion bands like Animals and Them and Yardbirds and those...
...
..his whole biogaphy interets me; a Veteran of Armed forces, as was
Jimi, a solidity earned. and he DID smile and sing harmonies on tv and
also his stance and that face was as promo-table as Mick's beauty, once
Bill grew out the hair-do, became more professionally experienced as a performing entertainer.

he was def a big attraction for me; and his vibe and presence, i think he was excited on that first Sullivan and other indie tv stops...and don't go 'there' with the exciting thing please; at least in relation to these remarks...

....and he dressed kinda super cool as any of them; i see charlie and bill as one thing, in some manners, a i see Mick and Keith as one thing; one energy vortex twinship meeting another and syncing up;
which brings me back to where i started; with those iso tracks...
it sounds stumble bum on WHAT I KNOW IS PERFECT MIXED INTO THE LIVE RHYTYM SECTION IN THE STUDIO...
...so that magic zone so to speak; that 'swing' or 'roll' that is so solid
as a platform for funk or r&b guitar hits; sometimes it's almost like Keith
is blocking out horn hits more than rhythm guitar straight as is treaditionally expected. bill didn't like andrew lol; bill's a crypic cat but straight out;
he's not so much screwing wise-guy shit in interviews; bill's got the tude and the presence and magic of that rhythm section; and the flexibility and passion; and even the dramatic lyricism i sense in some of his playing...
come on we love rock and roll cause it's that train that johnny was playing to the rhythm that the driver made...
i look at bill as the hendrix of rock and roll bass guitar on the biggest hits and albums by the greatest of all the millions of groups in the sixties into the seventies; his contribution is inestimable. Bill Wyman is a Giant.

nope i don't play his solo records; that's far from the point.
it's enough that he wrote jjf and most of sticky fingers and pretty much
all of exile; especially the tracks he didn''t play on cause he was also the producer. i've been sitting on this info for far too long; waiting this doc.
now i'm going Full Bill. He passed even the Charles Bukowski test.
none of the rest of them did.

If you were a rock star in the 50s-80s (?) you were surrounded by 13-16 year olds who wanted to lose their virginty to you. No excuse but it is what it is.

That is what someone is this thread said earlier: that Mick or Keith have taken control of their own narrative long ago. In 60's and 70's the groupies were very young, and there are probably few rockers who did not go down there.
So you got someone like Jimmy Page, whose story with Lori(?) is well documented. She was around 14. But Page is seen as a good guy the world over. Plant too; Zappa; Todd; Bolan, Bowie. But all these guys were superstars, and maybe this is part why they are superstars, or maybe they just had really good PR dept, but they were smarter about it.
I think Bill had a couple things against him: he thrust in in everybody's face when much later that whole mess with Mandy happened. All of it, his son etc. And the other thing, he is a little boring, so not as liked.

PS I suspect Jagger is a lot less boring in real life than he tries to make it seem. He doesn't need more adulation; he gets enough. So he can afford to seem totally lame in life. It is probably part of his wall. I love seeing photos of Mick getting a shotgun from Keith e.g.

They were not clumsy, they were real!

If recorded today, those same tracks - as every single track of any "modern" pop/rock song - would be have been edited to death (pitch, beat etc.) before being released ...

The Ravers documentary from 1967 shows how it was in 60's in UK...

It's all just so obvious.

But, it's a different thing to what Bill did later as he was no longer anywhere near the age of the girl.

A bit ironic. Rupert Murdoch attending the NYC premiere with Jerry in tow of course.
I wonder if any of The Stones had their personal phones tapped?

It certainly didn't help that the Stones were already considered "old" men.

"Why has Bill Wyman whitewashed his life story? The Rolling Stone’s relationship with a 13-year-old Mandy Smith shocked everyone -
but in a new biopic, he blithely glosses over it (no wonder the UK premiere has been scrapped)"

Bill

"In one segment of the film, Wyman documents the women who used to pursue him. 'Me and Brian [Jones, fellow Rolling Stone] used to go out to the clubs and pick up girls,' he says. 'They used to camp outside the hotel.
'Of course, I jumped at it. It just became part of my life . . . There was probably an addiction to sex, because I wasn't addicted to drugs, and I wasn't addicted to wine.'Every pop legend of that generation could probably tell a similar story. But how does he explain the chapter of his life which involved seducing a 13-year-old? Answer: he doesn't".

this was part of the paradigm that pissed Lennon off so much he started making those bitter interviews around the breakup. He didn't go into tons of detail but was pretty explicit on his feelings that the shit-show surrounding them with DJ's, press, tons of people making livings off the droppings; which also DID wildly promote their success and Keith gives John credit for blowing down the doors, then stopping to help other bands. yes he dropped a song on them he would get songwriter co-writer for, but he didn't need the money at that point; nothing could stop it, not even them; they pulled out of live shows in 66, already disgusted with most of it. let's remember that this was not just the performers pushing this kind of carelessness; and also, there have been good points made about these young boys and girls also ab dedicated to do anything with any crew or anyone else to get the meet and greet; paying in other ways; and going to other places....Lennon straight out talked of his disgust with these 'straight' guys being more pimps than press and etc...use your imagination; but not too darn much. kids need to be protected. we're sorta doing that now in some ways as generations come and people in that generation a little older than me; well way older with bill and charlie...have shown up more sensitive to abuse issues; and their ramifications.

but it's sort of like 'porn porn' and we're also contributing to that with this focus; i'm not critical of that; it's good BV is so cool all things considered, or busy or both, but....i'm not criticizing anyone's expression; just sayin' ya know? we're all prey to that easy exploitation and then trying to define the opposites of the 'theater' and the real world ramifications. music should be something respected for it's power and that's as far as i go with it; it shouldn't hurt anyone or promote a fashion that's Addict porn either, or Recovery porn an artist has to have to get press and promote themselves as other than Vikings on the raid , or something, and digging it. then they get daughters and have to look at it from el corozon and it better damn well be responsible or your wrecking someone elses approach to art none of us have business defining past the beat and soul and impact; Mozart to monkeys. hey hey...that's what i say...

Reading those reviews of the documentary, it starts to sound like that the content would not be too thrilling, or revail anything totally novel for us die-hard Stones fans. But that of it being a bit boring is nothing bad in my book. Actually I like that. STONE ALONE was that too, but it is the nerdy details that matter, not any over-all artistic impression. So looking forward seeing it.

I somewhat preferred 'Stone Alone' to 'Life' (enjoyed both very much tho).. Found the years of Bill's fact-keeping fascinating, documents of the early shows, and yes, even the pay stubs gave me somewhat of a picture of what it may have been like.. So I think I'll enjoy this film

I know there is a thread on this somewhere already, it got a bit negative at times so starting this one and crossing fingers it won't go down the same path

enjoy the clip
