The one he used on Ed Sullivan had a white pickguard.
There was nearly the same dark marks of wear on the fretboard.
But as we now he got it at nellcote...

You mean this guitar is Micawber!!

The Jimmy Johnson guitar is not Micawber. Micawber was purchased in 1971 by Ted Newman Jones after Keith's guitars where stolen. Keith used Micawber from late July 1971 until at least the first couple of 1972 shows with the standard single coil neck pickup. Somewhere before the San Francisco shows Newman fitted the neck humbucker.

By the way, Terry Reid opened for the Stones on the 1969 tour, and was using a blonde 50's Tele with humbucker in the neck position (now in possession of Joe Bonamassa). Could have been the inspiration to Keith.

I tried to enlarge the Mick Taylor pic. Low quality so impossible to be sure, but the guitar he is playing seems to have the neck pick up and the "fender" logo on the headstock

the wear on the frets looks different too. a lot on the first fret of the guitar Taylor is playing, not much on the one JJ is holding..

I noted that too -strange thing is that as far as I know there are no Esquires without decal. The only 'nocasters' where the two pickup versions AFAIK.

Taylor's Tele does have the second pickup for sure, there's another picture with the Tele more visible.

The wear on the fretboard doesn't say much though. The JJ picture seems from earlier than 1969, and in a much used studio the board of a 50's Tele can go just about black in a year when played every day.

I don't think the fret board is worn out looks more that the guy has sweaty fingers mixed with metal you get dirty or maybe you can call it a filthy fret board......

Could that be Terry Reid's Tele (which has a humbucker as a neck pickup), which maybe found its way to Muscle Shoals?

if thats his tele Mick Taylor is playing, in the pic above, and Keith then wanted a tele like it with a neck humbucker....

then Terry Reid should be a little more prominent in Stones history..

Here's a pic - don't know what year, and I don't know whether Terry Reid was playing it when supporting the Stones in '69 - the Micawber connection is definitely there though...



Impossible to tell (at least for me) whether that's the same guitar. The fingerboard wear doesn't look too dissimilar.
