I don't follow you here. Hoodoo Blues is my favourite on B&L - both the playing and singing are excellent - and Landau was a music critic who later worked for Springsteen as his manager and co-producer.

Are you mixing Rolling Stone up with Rolling Stones here?

You're correct re Landau, it was Rolling Stone, but the message remains the same.

Ron and Keith have been long-term drug and booze abusers which causes permanent brain damage, and their playing on B&L and the live performances are affected by this. Most RS fans take this for granted, don't hear it, or even more curious imo: they think their playing is great...

So you hear lower quality playing due to the drug abuse/brain damage? Wow, pretty impressive.

I'm quite impressed you don't hear it. Age might play a role too, but considering the simplicity of the music this will be a minor issue. Or maybe they had a pint or two when they recorded it. To each his own I guess.

Define damage by drugs scientifically and quantively, you can't.
Maybe you can musically: slower speeds, less notes played.
However, I am sitting in a car waiting out pouring rain w/
my 9 almost 10 yr. old who is playing me some of her young folks
u-tube videos
and if you want to speak of simplicity, programmed in a computer
don't need a lot of brain cells music,
I can post some links.

Should we count young folks on pharmaceutical meds since kindergarten
in this new day and age? Extra points there for brain damage from drugs?

You're comparing apples to oranges.

I'm referring to cocaine and hard liquor here. Killing for the brain.

Lack of speed, less notes played, lack of harmonic fantasy, unstable timing and coordination.

John Coltrane played some of his greatest stuff on heroine. So did Keith, listen to Exile or YaYa's.

Due to advanced arthritis, Keith's gnarled and grotesque fingers are part of his problem with playing the guitar for quite some time now.
Still though, he's learned to somewhat work around it by simplifying his approach, but that doesn't account for alot of the obvious mistakes he makes.
There's no question that nearly a lifetime of overindulgence in hard drugs and booze have had an impact.

By the time I got to this track and especially this track, I was eerily shocked. I could not believe what I was hearing. They absolutely nailed the vibe and emotion of authentic deep rooted blues with this one. As far as rock bands go, I've never heard anyone any better when it comes playing the blues. Blue & Lonesome is an excellent album and could easily be considered for spot in the top 10 of all their releases.

'Hoo Doo Blues' does sound like the last track, little slurry/ boozy.

Sorry for the drug tangent earlier. But then I thought, conversely;
if the 'best' music in rock and roll history was put down and played for a
decade plus a few years/ late sixties to late seventies,
maybe it's cuz they had the best drugs then/ most partaking?
Hmmm.
Love B & L.
Thanks Stones.
P.S.
Do not do drugs. Not advocating.

No way bro. An exaggeration would have been saying when they nailed it, they used a sledgehammer and drove that nail through the earth like a pile driver.

When listening, I was under the influence of some good medical conditioning and I was indeed eerily shocked. That chit scared me in a spooky good way. For real.

I'm sure you still get my point. I mean how else would I listen to the Stones? lol

grinning smiley Well, you've got the Rolling Stones and you've got the Rolling Stones.
There's huge difference over the decades though. That's my point of view in a nutshell.

That is true for sure. Sometimes I wonder if I'm too greedy wanting and waiting for just one more shot. One more album of original material to hopefully surprise us yet again or at the very least entertain us. They have given us quite a lot over the years and along the way some major changes. I think most fans would agree that they still manage to sound like the Rolling Stones through the changes. We may have become bored had they not changed so often musically. I think I would have. They won't ever be like they were when they were innocently reckless in their prime and dangerous on purpose. But wouldn't you just love another full album of new stuff. If they don't, we still have the Blues Bookend and all their rock & roll in the center. Stones love to you mate.

Thanks for your kind reply, enough Stones love here : The Taylor years, because he was the only real warm blues guitarist the Stones ever had. He never bored me at the time. After that,Stone cold,.not much to my taste. They should at least have invited him on B&L. Even Clapton couldn't save it, only 2 songs. .. Call me narrow minded or biased,.. you've got the right to.

Sounds like Keith is doing pretty well, considering all that brain damage
