Sympathy For The Devil: What are the odds?
Posted by: MadMax ()
Date: February 4, 2017 14:42

Hello fellow IORRians!!! I got a strange coincidence I want to share with y'all:

I have since 2003 attended in total 19 shows with our boys, and in those 18 years since 1999 they have finished their shows with Sympathy For The Devil TWICE.

Now here's the weird bit, outta all of these +500 shows they've played since 1999, what were the odds that I attended BOTH of these shows in which they finished with SFTD? I did! And with "only" 19 shows under my belt.

The both shows are Stockholm Cirkus 2003 and Werchter 2007.

Sometimes life's stranger than fiction I guess....

You're a rag trade girl, You're the queen of porn, You're the easiest lay on the white house lawn!!

It would seem that by now, the running order of songs from Keith's set on is cast in stone. Not good odds for Sympathy ever being a closer again. But should they tour the US again, I'd be thrilled if they just mixed up the sequence for God's sake even if they still do all the same songs. So glad they did All Down The Line and Angie in Cuba, those ones haven't become cast in stone so far.

good for you how cool! that IS unusual! as for the ancient days, i also remember sftd as the encore msg '75, Ron's 13th show with them. Clapton came out and jammed on it. It was my 3rd Stones show and the first with Ron; no Nicky and etc...they never closed w that the other times I've seen them...And it was a kick to have K on bass for that song in a live show.

Is there a place to hear that version of SFTD from 75 with Clapton?

To think I thought I knew the Stones better than this. I didn't know Clapton guested in 75 nor did I know Santana did also [youtu.be]

That show was pretty kookie; They had bare-chested hand drummers in huge lines streaming down the aisles for this one;
all that samba percussion and no Chuck to trigger a sample spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
At the kickoff The big lotus flower blossomed and there they were;
the last time out in '72 there had been no special stage...
...the place was rotten with jet set up front; Bianca was prominent;
almost a little too hip and glam in a way. a LOT of other Big rock stars
were there to see this show too...
I think they sold it out very many days in a row and knocked them all out day by day with no break day in between for a week. consecutive sold out nights.
...the ticket demand was every bit as hysterical as today
tho it was the sonic benefit of an arena to be enjoyed, not stadium; the sound hit you and stuck around...i remember it pretty well; it was very very different
from 3 years previous when I saw them in the same room.

I have seen one of the two big shows ever with SFTD as encore. Stuttgart 99. After the next one in Imst it returned to its usual place. Some Girls was replaced by Satisfaction and the tour became a Horror trip.

'..kinell... I just found out WHY it turned out like this.... Up here in the north we are big fans of The Phantom, aka Dragos aka The Grey Ghost, a geezer who lives in a skull cave in Bengali in Africa.

Just thought I'd check out if any of the 21 phantoms who have walked this earth was born in the same end digits as me, ie I am born in 1982 so 1582, 1682 etc etc.

The eight phantom was born in 1682 AND he croaked in 1717, EXACTLY 300 years ago!!! That's not all, these lot have had wives from all over the world but the eight's wife was from MY country!!!hot smiley What's even more spooky, his grandfather was born in 1646, and my father is born in 1946!!!! Talk about coincidence!

I think you are right Mr Silver Dagger, I should take the A-Train to the shows this summer or get on the old steam ship.... It'll be one bottle of scotch and one bottle of vodka before I board ANY old Flugzeug this summer!!!

Just to add a question, will there EVER be a second show where they decide not to play neither Flash nor Satisfaction? Up until now there has only been one show without them two Babies (after arriving of course, -65 and -68) in the history.

no

too many fans there to hear just those two songs!

Its too late now, but they should have done a tour where they played some shows "just for the fanatics" like us. Ticket buyers would know in advance they were not going to get the hits and the nuts like us would be thrilled to pay for the privilege of being there.

I wonder how well such a show woould sell? Would they sell out MSG or would it have to be a roseland ballroom type gig?

Leaving Satisfaction off the No Security tour setlist was a somewhat bold move, but all the other warhorses remained.

The Licks tour had amazing setlists, but the warhorses were always played. The Stones simply aren't an artsy, expectations-subverting kind of band that's going to play esoteric, scrambled up setlists for die-hards.

Even Springsteen plays Born To Run every show no matter what.

no JJF at the Enmore in Sydney, the one where Angus & Malcom Young played. & Angus pushed Mick out of the way to do his solo, causing much mirth with the rest of the band. i think even Mick was laughing.

They did play Satisfaction though.

rebelhipi is saying there was a show where neither song was played.

Can never read about the '75 tour w/o thinking about this gem from Bukowski in Creem:

"Jaggernaut: Wild Horse on a Plastic Phallus"

Miss You wasn't played on the No Security Tour either. No YCAGWYW or Satisfaction either.

Only 8 warhorses out of 20 to 21 songs. Unless you count BTMMR as a warhorse which it wasn't yet at that point in time.

"Midnight Rambler" made pretty much it's first post-1976 appearances besides '89/'90 and a few rare performances in '95. So,you can't count that just because it ended up being played more on future tours.

I'm over the moon about Bukowski.
I read him a lot and now that i'm late 60's it's interesting to watch
his career with some perspective as to the changes and forms he messed
around with as the typewriter goes out and the word processor comes in,
and also his maturing perspective; still a sharp-eyed critic, and the way
I see it, an important reporter almost; like a whacked cultural anthropologist.
some of his work stuns me.
ye here know how much we all love the Stones, but that Creem piece
is one of the most searing and some would say, accurate, review in some ways...
he's a good bit older than them and informed by an entirely different era
of jazz and pop and swing....it's a fascinating interview with dozens
of great, funny and true moments.
i didn't review it with your posting today but will again, i love that piece.
something about describing Mick as wearing pajamas with shoe laces tied
around the ankles; i've been laughing over that one for over 40 years.
he thinks bill's the only solid musician in the group; lol, which delights hops.

thumbs up

That's about the size of it...

...and they aren't going to mix up the set lists because they're catering for the typical audience member, who attends one show...not for we nutcases around here.

Further to the above...and it's a very old "hobby horse" of mine but remains relevant .

Part of the problem is that the Stones are still so very popular.

The reason that some less commercially successful artists can cater for their "die hard fans" is that nobody else attends their shows !

Isn't that just what the live Stones always were ?

The world's best "Garage Band"

That's pretty much what they were until the start of the big production era with Steel Wheels.

Listen to "Some Girls Live in Texas " or "Leeds '82 " from the Vaults.

Who says I'm counting those songs?

JJF
Brown Sugar
IORR
Honky Tonk Women
Satisfaction
Sympathy
Tumbling Dice
Start Me Up
Miss You

I'd say that's the core nucleus of warhorses. Gimme and Rambler have also become nightly events, but those were the core before that.
