Wasn’t Bad Company trying to recruit Mick Taylor around this time?

I wish he would have taken that gig.

According to the article, Charlie excused in the middle of the interview because he had to talk with Paul and Simon.

Rodgers and Kirke supposedly called Taylor to tour with Free after Paul Kossoff's health worsened and he was unable and but Taylor declined. Free had to use Wendell Richardson instead.

This from wiki, a hit and miss site
___________________________________________
___________________________________________

"Critical reaction to the album was varied at the time. Bud Scoppa called the album "one of the year's richest musical experiences"[3][22] in Rolling Stone, while Lester Bangs derided the effort in Creem, saying, "There is a sadness about the Stones now, because they amount to such an enormous 'So what?' The sadness comes when you measure not just one album, but the whole sense they're putting across now against what they once meant..."[3]

Goats Head Soup is now generally considered to have marked the end of the Stones' "golden age", with Stephen Thomas Erlewine saying, "Sliding out of perhaps the greatest winning streak in rock history, the Stones slipped into decadence and rock star excess with Goats Head Soup... This is where the Stones' image began to eclipse their accomplishments, as Mick ascended to jet-setting celebrity and Keith slowly sunk deeper into addiction, and it's possible hearing them moving in both directions on Goats Head Soup, at times in the same song."[23] '"

I always enjoy hearing from Lester RIP;
he's always entertaining and shooting his mouth off with such passion.
i'm of course not near always agreed but i dig his input.

my faves are silver train and star star.
i love Angie but you know; I've heard it a bit too many times.
It's super though, imo. a triumph of sort to me; even tho i like the hard blues boogie best;
some of Keith's best lyrics IMO.

can't say enough about 'silver train.'
Tho many consider it filler, i do not.
that's the Key number for me here.

i'll avoid making the grand statements of assessment cuz i don't really know which era someone joins in
and has a very deep experience with this band.

'100 years ago' is nice;
i also like 'star star' a lot and don't subscribe to other fans here I respect,
who think it more color by numbers stones. when they rock it out, i'm in. period.

that being said, i'm Not into 'heartbreaker'--
i was when it first came out tho.
it didn't hold on me; a lot of their super early stuff still does but this didn't. personally speaking.

coming down again is super, Winter a Mick Taylor epic beauty.
kleermaker put an extended version on You tube i adore. ty.

not much into the rest of it.
the lead number has groove but it was a letdown for me when i got the record,
and never was one of my faves to this day.
'Soup' is not a 'golden era' that preceded it,
imo; and many others feel that way i guess.

i like several on IORR LP too.
that's another day; but those two did seem to have the same relative 'hit or miss' ratio track to track generally.
my opinions and feelings about certain of their stuff HAS changed and evolved over time,
but usually my first instincts, for me anyway,
hold true as far as the dedication with which I'll approach an album.

I think Mick and Keith have a bit of love for GHS. Aside from the obvious success of Angie making every comp except SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES (or any other GHS track), it's had pretty good representation on some hits comps.

According to the report:
When we entered Dynamic Studio at 9:00 pm on December 9, they just started rehearsing along with Mick's guide vocal recorded on a big tape recorder.
I felt his vocal on the tape was like another person's.
The song was a Chuck Berry type rock 'n' roll.

Star Star may be Chuck Berry type rock 'n' roll, but it has this Stones at their best stamp all over it. Incredible dynamics, listen to how the song develops from an almost tentative start to an almost maniac ending (for example, no bass guitar at the start - ok, they used this trick already on Honky Tonk Women, but this is so effective!) and compare this to a rather flat because "in your face" from start to finish Rough Justice.

For me, there are just a few Stones albums that get better over time that aren't The Big Four or The Big Six.

GHS is one of them. Love it more and more every year.

Yes that is one of my favorite Stones secret sauce happenings. Keith likes to use that no Bass at first trick. It ADDS such a boost when the Bass does arrive. Ronnie also used it but not as well. Im trying to think of the songs; somewhere on '1234' album, and also in "Ain't Rockn Roll" - he takes the Bass out for a weird solo section, and then brings it back in with a bang.
Very good point from the Dog comparing "Rough Justice" to @#$%&' and how it doesn't compare well.

just for 'Coming Down Again' its a reflection of maturity and experimentation..

THE ROLLING STONES
magazine advertisements from 1973 and 1974 for the LP
GOATS HEAD SOUP
from Japan!

On offer are two pieces of memorabilia for THE ROLLING STONES.

One is a full-page advert from 1973 to promote the album GOATS HEAD SOUP on vinyl and cassette;
the other, from 1974, was for the cassette and 8-track cartridge versions of the album, as well
as for albums by Neil Young, Carly Simon, and James Taylor, among others. The cassette/8-track ad
is printed on newspaper-like paper and there is a light bend mark on the top right.

The size of each page is about B5 (10-1/8" x 7-1/8" approx.).
