I don't think so. You cannot overrate an album from the Taylor era.

Time to re-appreciate the album with a deluxe edition I hope.

I do like to see more Jimmy Miller produced unreleased mixes if possible.

Goat's is a better album thank Sticky. There. I said it.

1."Brown Sugar" - great song of course and a better rocker than the rockers on GHS. But I never listen to it because there are better live versions from 1972 and Altamont.

2."Sway" - overrated, not bad, but overrated. Great guitars of course.

3."Wild Horses" - the most overrated song of theirs. Something Guns and roses couldve penned. And did. After hearing this. Cannot stand it. The mother of Out of tears, Streets of love but most fans dont hear that I guess.

4."Can't You Hear Me Knocking" - the riff and the first part is the most overrated riff by Keith ever. It sucks. The second part is great.

5."You Gotta Move" - bad pointless cover. Great in 1975/1976.

6."Bitch" - good

7."I Got the Blues" - bad. Pointless genre territory pissing. The mother of all those bad live covers of the last years. Be it soul, stax, blues or gospel.

8."Sister Morphine" - maybe ok but not a good song. They couldve found better ways to pay proper tribute to Ry and Marianne.

9."Dead Flowers" - really good

10."Moonlight Mile" - great but nowadays somewhat overrated. The stupid guitar intro is not good at all but we dont complain because the song is good.

As an album Sticky is not better than Soup. Sticky has a few excellent songs but also plunkers and Im afraid im one of the HMS dissidents in regards to Sticky. GHS is a stronger album. Underrated.

"Dancing with Mr. D" - underrated. This album lacks a Brown sugar, SFTD, GS/YCAGWYW or a JJF but that's ok. This is a good song.
"100 Years Ago" - good genre piece.
"Coming Down Again" - good Keith number, honest song.
"Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" - good but perhaps failed attempt at creating a genre hit.
"Angie" - great ballad. Yes it's sleazy and vulgar but Mick is great on it.

"Silver Train" - very good filler.
"Hide Your Love" - filler but good
"Winter" - it isnt MM but it is great song.
"Can You Hear the Music" - not very good. The riff is of course but Mick is trying too hard.
"Star Star" - good rocker. Love it.

Yes GHS is more consciously picking from other current acts and albums but on the other hand Sticky had a couple of forced leftovers. They had to construct and produce a better album this time in lack of a Brown Sugar, Wild Horses and Bitch.

Thing I never understood is why people consider Soup as a "mellow" introspective album. Probably its Dancing's slow groove as an opener that is misleading.

In fact it is more uptempo and funkier than Fingers.

If you rearrange the running order of Soup's songs following Fingers' pattern, this becomes quite clear.

Star Star / Sugar
Dancin / Sway
Angie / Horses
DooDoo / Knocking
Love / Move

Train / Bitch
Coming down / Blues
100 / Morphine
Winter / Flowers
Music / Mile

That said, since cliches are stale, I'm happy they mixed things up.

<In fact it is more uptempo and funkier than Fingers>

Must be the mood of the songs + that large parts of the songs are «minor»-songs:

100 Years Ago before the break
Coming Down Again
The verses on Heartbreaker
Angie
The bridges on Can You Hear The Music
Winter
Even Hide Your Love has a sadness to it

We're left with Dancing With Mr. D, Silver Train and Star Star.

Absolutely. No disagreement here.

However, it's like everything is clearer or more evident on SF, while the overall vibe on GHS is more hazy and harder to grasp. Might be something with the actual recording of GHS as well.

Listening to that record, you get the impression the band is tired.

It was the last Jimmy Miller produced album, so the recording is great. Nobody captured Watts' drums as well as Jimmy Miller.

Jagger should've devoted more time to the lyrics of the songs. A song like "Winter" is a great tune, but the lyrics fall flat. Same goes for "Silver Train." And "Dancing with Mr D". And "Star Star."

I guess some is related to what Mick Taylor says here

at 0:35 and forward

Too many drugged people around dragging the energy out of the band.

There is not a concensus among the fans that the recording is great. Miller was a producer, not merely an engineer.

IMO, the sound is uneven. Angie sounds terrific, though, despite two disturbing earlier Mick vocal takes being audible. 100 Years Ago, Coming Down Again and Heartbreaker sound good as well.

As there are several 1968/1969-songs on SF and Exile

Can you (or someone else) be more precise please? Which songs are we talking about?

Does it mean they recorded or re-recorded songs written in 1968/69 during SF and EXILE-sessions? Or did they use indeed already-in-the-can-material from the 1968/69-period for SF/EXILE?

Revisiting leftovers and re-recording them isn´t a crime, but using finished takes from the past on a new release, well that´s very different. It would shed a new light on SF/EXILE artistically.

For real true Stones fans it makes no difference. Clearly you are not one.

So true fans are not allowed to ask when a released song was written, recorded or re-recorded? Of course it makes a difference. There are fans who want to know when a song that ends up on a new album was recorded. If they release a new album in 2017 and the greatest and most outstanding song would be a song already recorded in 2002, then it matters artistically. If you don´t know the facts, you might think this outstanding gem is all new and they are still great songwriters. But that wouldn´t be true. Everybody except you should easily understand why it is important to know when a song was written/recorded.

For the vagillionth time, it does not matter when it was written or recorded. A true Stones fan knows that.

Matters artistically? Says the one that thinks their worst album is great. Talk about an artistic turd. Oh wait - you do.

It seems that you're the only one that whines about when something was done and then finished. As explained vagillions of times before, a plethora of their albums are not albums due to what you think.

Stop posing.

That means that Sticky Fingers and Exile aren't real albums...

And LET IT BLEED and EMOTIONAL RESCUE and IT'S ONLY ROCK'N'ROLL and UNDERCOVER.

You know, U is not a real album because it has a song from 1975 on it.

Which song is it? Did they use the recording from 1975 or was it re-recorded?
Re-recording an unreleased song is tolerable, using old recordings for a new album isn´t.

If the re-record Honest Man for their new album, it´s ok.
If they use the vocal and/or instrumental track from back then, it´s cheating on us.

With your terms, irrelevant. Just like your opinion.

Oh yes it´s irrelevant if they are cheating on us. It must be, because true fans have to eat everything without asking where it comes from. Come on you can´t be serious. You really want to tell us that you wouldn´t care at all if they would release the 1994-vocals of Honest Man on a new album instead of recording a new vocal track? Ridiculous, you disagree just for the sake of disagreeing.

Only poseur fans eat it. You are a poseur. Real fans don't care - as long as it was recorded and finished ala BEGGARS BANQUET, LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS, EXILE, IORR, EMOTIONAL RESCUE, TATTOO YOU and UNDERCOVER.

And why you continue to name a horrible cheesy Kenny Loggins song from the VOODOO sessions proves even more that you're just a poser. Aside from that fact, you almost described TATTOO YOU, which never had vocal tracks other than the live run through.

Just made a playlist of a longer GHS with...

Criss Cross Mind
Tops
Through The Lonely Nights
Waiting On A Friend

... and it's even more killer.

The other way round - making it an EP of four or five songs - would be a more satisfying thing to do, imo.

Goes like this:
01 Heartbreaker
02 Silver Train
03 Hide Your Love
04 Star Star
05 100 Years Ago

Accompanying single-release:
01 Angie
02 Can You Hear The Music

Nope.

Yup.
The EP and the single would have been more satisfiying artistically and nobody would have considered it as a "let-down" after EXILE.

Said by a poseur.

Nope.

Angie is 'sleazy and vulgar?' Hmmm, I’d like to think that you meant to describe Star Star but picked on Angie by mistake. But judging from your above reviews you’re rather prone to making lunatic statements so I don’t know what to think....

I have good memories of GHS but I don’t think there’s another Stones’ record where my opinions of the songs have changed so much over time.
As a teenager I loved every song except Dancing with Mr. D. I listened intensely to all 6 minutes of Coming Down Again and was enraptured by Mick’s musings on love in Hide Your Love and especially Can You Hear the Music.

Today, however, Coming Down Again is a slog to get through and Can You Hear the Music is just silly. (I still like the way Mick says 'baby' in Hide Your Love though...)

But i think HMS is onto something, the LP-era sucked many artists dry. Compare airplay and general positive reviews of Doom and Gloom to Bigger Bang. Blue and lonesome is a coveralbum
