Great stats, I wonder how accurate the figures for their 60's albums are, or any 60's bands for that matter. Hard to believe that 12x5 has sold more copies than Now! and Decembers Children combined! You would think that when ABKCO first released the whole catalog on CD in 86 and then the 2002 SACD hybrids that these numbers would have risen a fair amount?

Is Exile 4 million x 2 = 8, being a double?

B+L’s numbers are quite impressive when one considers that album sales have crashed 70% since ABB and far more since the 60’s, 70’s 80’s etc...

The first few albums had a slightly different tracklisting for the USA and Europe, but No.1/ENGLANDS NEWEST HITMAKERS and N.2/12x5 can be seen as the same album.
This even continued until AFTERMATH and BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, but at least these albums got the same title oceanwide.

Pre-SoundScan it was one copy equaled 2 units.

Very bizarre to see DIRTY WORK higher than UNDERCOVER. In fact, it's bizarre that DIRTY WORK is even on there.

I'm a little surprised to see Beggars Banquet so far down the list, considering that the other Big Four LPs are close to the very top.

Wonder if figures related to SF, SG and Exile include the new extended editions.

More in general, I think the oldies' stats benefit from the various multiple editions that were published along the years. I guess that most of those who bought the LP's at the time of release, then bought the same thing once again on CD, remastered CD etc.

I myself (and I am not a collector) have at least 6/7 copies of SG and god knows how many SF or Exiles.

Considering the above, I am impressed by Voodoo Lounge's sales.

Re: dirty work, I remember at the time it was considered a much awaited come back, after all the rumors of the band splitting, jagger solo, live aid etc.

I am truly surprised by the low sales of the first ones. True that those early eras are massively covered by a ton of greatest hits compilations, but come on!

"A bigger bang didn't have good sales"

Alexis, 2,5 million copies was a good enough number in 2005-2006. There was massive downloading then, already. Having these sales ABB stayed to weeks at #1 of the Global Chart and 5 weeks on the Top 20.
Just an example: On the 2005 Global Chart Nickelback's album was No 20 best selling of the year, with 2,479,000 sales. I think the resaon why the particular statistic does not include ABB is that album's sales had been separeted between 2005 and 2006.

But B&L have better sales, of course...

I believe another thread suggests Universal will make 12 to 15 million $ from
B and L.
So, ABKCO /Decca certainly made a mint from Stones product in the 60s.

how do you figure that...2.5 million vs 1.6...maybe you expect it will, based on current performance?

FORTY LICKS world wide sales: 7.65 million. I believe that's 7.65 million copies, not half, which is the old way of counting a double album.

From what I could(n't) find solo wise it's only The Rolling Stones.

They have over 15 compilations selling over 1 million copies worldwide, 5 of them with sales over 6 million copies each, this hurts a lot their studio album sales.
Just take a look at Brown Sugar, the song got combined sales of over 50 million copies if we count all the albums on which is included.

Treaclefingers, I do figure that B&L has ALREADY sold better than ABB, but also better than several Stones albums from the past, considering how the general level of sales has been fallen. According to Global Chart, B&L became 11th best selling album of 2016 and 1,305,000 copies (after 4 weeks, only) were enough for that. Back in 2005, the 11th best selling album needed nearly 4 million sales... In 2016, only 5 albums sold over 2 millions, each one. In 2005 there were 27 albums having sold over 2 m. Huge difference...

Sticky Fingers
Hot Rocks
Made In The Shade
Rewind
Jump Back
Forty Licks
Simian Accident

The new sales of MADE IN THE SHADE can only happen at iTunes it seems because it's out of print (http://www.rollingstones.com/release/made-in-the-shade/); Rewind has been out of print since 1990; FORTY LICKS went out of print in 2005.

Look at the first listed song, which was also issued as a single to promote REWIND! [www.discogs.com]

ok, so you're looking at a 'relative comparison' but the topic here is absolute numbers. you could make a similar argument for the 60s, where most of the sales were in singles relatively speaking and albums only really became big at the end of the decade and in the 70s.

From the link [chartmasters.org] We can go even deeper:

BROWN SUGAR, included in...

9.350,000 - 1971 - Sticky Fingers
12.800,000 - 1971 - Hot Rocks
1.900,000 - 1975 - Made In The Shade
2.400,000 - 1977 - 30 Greatest Hits / Get Stoned (1977 European Compilation)
2.500,000 - 1984 - Rewind
2.200,000 - 1989 - Singles Collection - London Years
6.900,000 - 1993 - Jump Back
7.650,000 - 2002 - Forty Licks
2.200,000 - 2012 - GRRR
+ 500,000 at least from additional compilations: Singles Box 1968-71 (2005), Rolled Gold + (2007), The Rolling Stones Box Set (2009), Singles 1971–2006 (2011), The Rolling Stones in Mono (2016) and local compilations

We have 48.400,000 copies sold from albums including Brown Sugar, but we have LIVE albums too:

2.500,000 - 1977 - Love You Live
4.000,000 - 1991 - Flashpoint
2.000,000 - Live Licks (2004) + Shine a Light (2008) + Hyde Park (2013) + Bootleg series from 2012-on + Sticky Fingers Live (2015)

The total now is 57.000,000 copies including Live Albums, now we have videos too:

5.500,000 including all videos with the song performed (At The Max, Four Flicks, Voodoo Lounge, B2B, Ladies and Gentleman, Texas 78, Shine a Light, etc......)

At last we have the original single from 1971 which sold 2.700,000 copies and on digital form another 1.600,000 copies.

So after all, Brown Sugar has sold 67.000,000 million copies from all formats (single, albums, videos) available.

We can make the same work for almost any classic song and the total will be almost the same.

It's very hard for the casual fan.
