Bands originating in the 60's and still performing live
Posted by: swimtothemoon ()

I have wondered how many 60's bands are still performing and/or recording music.
In order to compile a meaningful list, I thought it important to disqualify bands
whom have only non-original members or realitivly minor original members remaining. An example of this might be the Yarbirds whom have only the original
drummer left. The delima is this is very subjective but I see no other method.

Also in my short list I have disregarded solo artists since their band continues as long as the artist. A couple examples would be Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond, etc.
It appears to be much more difficult to keep a band together as opposed to a solo artist and their group of musicians.

Below is my short list and feel I must be missing a few or many.

1. Rolling Stones
2. The Who
3. The Moody Blues
4. The Zombies
5. The Monkees

Yep,

It's rather difficult to agree about what would constitute a band from the 60s still gigging...

... as opposed to a couple of blokes who used to be in a band in the 60s, who have dusted off the old name to make a few more quid winking smiley

How many of these bands still have a significant portion of their 60's lineup intact?

Don't take me wrong, I am not an arrogant Stones fan, but... But the Stones does remain 10 - 100 times more polular live act than the others, with the exception of Who, which only are 2-3 less popular than our boys... I suppose there are some reasons...

The United States Marine Band originated in 1798 and is still performing live .... though they haven't been quite the same since Sousa left.

Yes that is the difference. Also, A couple of the bands mentioned have only recently done reunion tours. I suppose the Monkees really should be in that category as well.

The Turtles, as far as I know, still have their two key members.
So they could be added to the list.

I'm not sure if Tommy James is the only original member remaining in his band or not.

The longevity of the stones is amazing when compared to their 60's contemporaries. They are still producing new music as well as touring. Even during their touring break from 82-89 they were still an active band and
producing new music.

From Wiki:

On 5 November 2016, Dave Davies posted on Twitter: "Me and Ray have not spoken about Kinks shows at all – although were [sic] trying to work together on other stuff and have worked on music together".

Aerosmith started in '71, so just misses your list; Still 46 years and still all original members, is exceptionally rare.
for better and worse as those albums flew by, but they're still sort of intact, despite the fights and solo diversions which should be familiar to us...
...guess they might have one last tour in them...perry came back from the health scare...tyler's in good shape.
i think joey's fine tho in the past he's had heart issues; he's toured ok since those treatments...they're still goin...just misses the list by a hair,
but very obviously in teen their teen bands in the 60's...covering a lot of Yardbirds and early soulful Incvasion stuff. glimmer twins meet toxic twins etc...
...but plenty their own originality; those first four albums were really ace imo...
i've heard terrible things about recent shows from fans I know who really really love them; then again, that's one's person opinion of one night; i didn't see them.

I saw them live on a real early morning show a year or three back and it weird;
maybe a little too early in the morning for me to see really old guys in heavy makeup, grandma's earrings and costumes..
...but hey, they were hitting all demographics, trying to stay alive, promoting whatever it was they were selling;
they were absolutely live in that small tv studio too which took confidence...
...it wasn't really that good...it was almost like hey don't fk up ur own legacy...but the discerning fans can always find the good stuff from way back if they look...
...but i'm still on their side from a distance and would like to see them thrill the fans one more time. they do seem to have box office power.

Ten Years After still technically has 3 of the 4 originals. But, come on, it was all about Alvin Lee. They are nothing without him, and he stopped touring with TYA many years before his death.
