Happy new year all you stones people!! I just watch seattle 81 dvd and i think it was a amazing performance.what you think about it?

I was at both of the Seattle shows in '81... both opened by my second favorite band of all time (J Geils Band). Have not seen the dvd, but Will have to seek it out now that I know one exists never been one for watching video of shows..

The quality is pretty rough, isn't it?

There's a pretty good soundboard audio recording of one of the Seattle '81 concerts out there.

One of the best versions of "When the Whip Comes Down" outside of 1978 in my opinion.

On the Seattle 81 DVD which I own the sound is not synchronized properly to the video. I wonder if this is true on all versions. Mine is probably ten years old.

I went to both of those shows & they were pretty great. I think someone on the Kingdome staff was tapping into the house video system & recording. Boots of the Stones, Eagles & Led Zeppelin from there are pretty common. I wish there was 1 of Jeff Beck opening for Aerosmith there as that set was the best of the bunch. Jeff was on fire & by the time he finished Aerosmith should've just stayed in the dressing room.

Iv got both shows in VHs one cone of them is far better in quality
love those VHS

Some of the best footage from the early part of the tour before they changed the sound.

Videos are both in very good quality (especially considering they were sourced from VHS at the time). Audio on 10/14 show is marred by a constant "hum" in the line.

Performances are top notch.

I was at the 10/14/81 show - when Let It Bleed came on, that was a moment - hearing that guitar intro live was such a rush.
Amazing looking at the set list now...

Interesting that in 1981, many of their songs that we now call "warhorses" were already thought of as "old" classics! Now, if they do a song from 1997 (OOC) we think it's cool that they're doing a "newer" song.

cuz it was only 2 albums of new material ago. a relative blink in time.

This is one of my favorite boots, along with Cedar Rapids from 81. The music is very energizing, and not overwrought at all; Much different than Still Life, to me, which didn't seem to be a true capture of their sound at that time. Not that Still Life is bad. It's just not as 'alive' sounding as the Seattle show and other stuff from their 81 tour, IMO.

This has all been analyzed here before but it's a major turning point for the Stones. 1981-82 was the "classic" Stones last tour. It was the end of improvising onstage, which led to some glorious jams. It was the end of Ian Stewart's nerve jangling boogie woogie piano, the end of Keith and Ronnie's ramshackle but heartfelt backing vocals. It was the end of Keith leading the band, with Charlie following and Wyman anticipating, giving that push-pull swing that was once so thrilling. It was the end of the Stones playing for their diehard fans as opposed to the broader common denominator. They've done wonderful shows since 1989 but there's no denying that players like Chuck Leavell, professional backup singers, and arrangements that take no risks by copying the studio versions are not what the true diehard fans would wish for. And of course, the absence of Bill Wyman in exchange for the slick and professional Darryl Jones. They are still very good at what they do. I love their performance in the Cuba film. But alas, the classic Stones that I truly love the most did their final tour in 1981-82. That was a band whose live shows were an entirely different thing than their recordings. The memory of that band is forever loved and cemented in my mind. Now they are a living tribute to their records, albeit a very good one.
