Interesting that for a lot of people (admittedly not everyone) while they know their favourite band, their next favourite is much more debatable.

It's as though the 'passion level' falls exponentially from 1 to 2.

I think I speak for almost everyone, the second favorite band is either The Beatles or the Stones and the first favorite band is either the Stones or The Beatles...

Within a specific age group, perhaps. I don't think 30 somethings (or younger) necesssarily have the Beatles in their top 5.

I've spoken with a few under 30s who've never even heard of the Beatles...that is scary

There was a time when (some) teens thought McCartney's 1st group was Wings!. Teens today, probably never even heard of McCartney

OK i'll admit beatles are probably number 2 for me, not REM. REM do however have a phenomenal catalogue.

Even if I have other favourites of second or third order as well, either
the Beatles
or
the continuation of bands Joy Division / New Order.

Well, I'm a weirdo evidently.

Beatles aren't even in my top 10, and I'm 42.

Stones #1 by a country (or should I say moonlight) mile.

2nd place and beyond are a blur of many.....

Bob Dylan, Wilco, Grateful Dead come to mind.

But Beatles, nope. I like them a lot.....but very little of their work is "desert island" stuff for me.

Its weird: I see the Beatles as something besides a 'band'. So I dint even consider them when a question like this arises. They are w/o doubt the Greatest IMO.

AC/DC is my fav band followed by the Stones, The Beatles, Aerosmith, Creedence, Led Zep, Black Crowes, The Who...

Well, this may come as shocker to some posters here on the IORR blog...but the The Rolling Stones are my second 'favourite' band of all time.

My first favorite is The Beatles. There is a forum discussion on here for 'the Beatles vs. the Stones' which attracted me...and I love what's written on here regarding the Beatles-Stones relationship.

Yes, Beatles were amazing! But for some reason I didn't think of them when I read the topic, I guess they've been gone too long. McCartney doesn't help either, he has some great stuff, but then he has some god awful songs ... things like My Brave Face, and Say Say Say come to mind.

And what about that other duet w/ michael jackson, The Girl Is Mine ... I seriously stuck a pen piercing both my ear drums at that time, luckily the doctors were able to fix me up, I hear pretty well again.
