I was one of the world's biggest Chicago fans in the early years, because they were one of my very first concerts, in 1970.

Saw them three times. That first show was no opening act, two long sets, and an encore, just a wonderful experience. It was right after the second album (silver cover, "Chicago.")

Second show was right after "Chicago III" came out (tattered American flag logo). Same as the first show, but no encore this time.

The third (and final) show was when the Live at Carnegie Hall set came out, about a year later. No opening act, short set, they were God Awful, tired, and just phoning the show in, and no encore. I decided it was time to move on to other bands, and I did.

In those first couple of years, though, Chicago was one of the coolest bands on the planet.

Chicago was a revolutionary band though that was successful for over 20 years. people think of the late 70's/80's big goofy ballads and think that's chicago and that's all they ever were

The Doors sound has nothing to do with Chicago other than they sound like The Doors on one song from CTA and the other songs are just a bunch of hippy noise. At least that is better than what they became - one giant sappy machine!

My brother shared this with me cause he loves Chicago. He told me that he read that Jimi Hendrix said Terry Kath was a better guitarist than him. I don't know if Hendrix really said that, but I don't think this isn't half bad.

Update: Okay, a friend (you know who you are, thanks ) set me straight on Hendrix's comment about Kath. It's more nuanced than that, basically, Hendrix was just being humble and polite.

But I still like this and don't get all the hate toward this fine American band; they put out some quite decent songs that were part of the soundtrack of my youth.

Not a fan but Terry Kath was a darn good guitarist and the keyboard player had a great, deep, gritty voice. The songs held them back from being hot rockers.

Anyway, I was commenting more about CNN than about the band. CNN is constantly airing that promo spot for "Chicago: Now More Than Ever"... as if Chicago has been and is still topping the charts and packing 'em in live.

The only song by Chicago I could name is "If you leave me now". Was a big hit, and very popular at school parties.

They the 6th highest record seller of all American bands in the USA at 39 million.

I actually saw Chicago live in August of 2016 in Appleton, WI. Nice show, had fun but its hard to take them seriously. Its like having vanilla ice cream as your only dessert choice for life.

Can't comment on their current incarnation, but back in the day, I would hardly consider them "vanilla ice cream"...quite the opposite. In their heyday, they were multi-faceted...rock, pop, jazz, horns, keyboards, great guitarist, three lead vocalists, multiple songwriters, and all excellent musicians.

Was a fan back in the '70s, but not so much in the '80s when they found success with the ballads. Haven't paid much attention to them the last 30+ years, but still enjoy the old stuff from the Kath/Cetera era.
