Lyrics:

Ride 'Em On Down

Yeah!
I'm a dealin' man, still dealing, yeah
I'll go keep on dealing till I find myself a bed
I got to stop dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down
Well I done stopped dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down

Yeah!
Raised in the country, got up raised in town
Got two kids and they're all look like mine
I got to stop dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down
Yeah, I got to stop dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down

Yeah!
I'm dealing darling, by some other deck
Seem like somebody gonna take my shit
I got to stop dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down
Well, I done stopped dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down

Yeah!

Yeah!
Born yesterday and not a day before
Here you come knocking at my door
Done stop dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down
Well I done stopped dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down

Yeah!

Yeah I done stopped dealing, I believe I'll ride 'em on down

played on the very first gig in Marquee 1962. July 12.
classic great blues number, beautiful natural performance
Mick Jagger on the top
classic simple videoclip - cool number, cool chick, cool car

that's why I love The Rolling Stones

“shake em on down” dates back to september 1937, when
delta bluesman bukka white penned and recorded it in chicago. (vocalion 03711)
booker (bukka) white: shake 'em on down

chicago blues singer eddie taylor recorded the track in 1955 changing the title to "ride 'em on down" (vee-jay vj 185)
.........[btw: jimmy reed guitar & harmonica]
it's this version that inspired the stones to cover the track:
eddie taylor: ride 'em on down

"shake 'em on down" was recorded by several bluesmen with white's title or
a variation: "ride 'em on down", "break 'em on down", "truck 'em on down":

big bill broonzy (1938 vocalion 4149),
tommy mcclennan (1939 bluebird 8347),
big joe williams (1941 bluebird 8969)
robert petway (1941 bluebird 8838)

recorded in several versions,
using both acoustic and
electric slide guitar by mississippi fred mcdowell

I think it was played once before that, at Hogwarts circa 1400s.

Lots of energy and enthusiasm, superb harp, but the song itself does not excite me ... it's too linear and predictable. To each their own ...

NICOS sweetie, I hear different words in a couple of places:

I'm gonna keep on dealing 'til I find myself a bet
...
I'm dealing darling, bottom of the deck
Seem like somebody gonna take my chit
(as in a gambling marker) (although the Mick probably did sing "shit" just because he enjoys being a baddie :E)

And: How do y'all understand the title phrase?
If it's equivalent to "shake sb down" (thanks, jbgoode!)
in this context I guess it's less about extortion
than just taking all their money?

It's OK but not a stellar re-working of a blues, like, let's say Love In Vain or You Gotta Move.

Maybe they could have tried slowing it down or doing something else to it. For me the Stones work best when they slow the blues down - another example is Down In The Hole - a song that burns with hellish intensity and feels like Mick is actually teetering on a precipice and staring down into a void.

So yeah, nice song but it could have been so much more.

I am blown away by this track in that it is so simple but yet so hard because of getting the correct vibe which is where the groove really lies .Brilliant work Glimmer Twins and how about that it was played at the Marquee club July 12 ,1962.That sure is some blues DNA
