There's no official chart in Chile, the market is so small (about 90% is streaming and ilegal sales) that even GOLD albums (5,000 copies sold) are so rare nowadays, only 2 albums in 2016.

Maybe, but 62412 people paid to see them in concert last year.

Of course, the money is there, album sales are not relevant anymore, you need to sell over 5 million copies to get real money from sales and I can't think on more than 4-5 acts worldwide doing it.

Just think in Argentina, they can sell over 151,000 tickets in 14 hours while their last album has yet to reach 20,000 copies sold after 2 months being #1 or #2 on the charts.

But earlier in this thread I thought you said that Universal should be making $12-15 million on B an L sales if 1.5 million or so?
Isn't that a reasonable return?

I'm talking about real money, you can do the math, $12-15 million split between:
- Record label
- Production, studio and marketing costs
- Publishing rights
- Band members and musicians on the album

With so many people around you need big numbers to make a profit.

Thanks georgelicks.....interesting to speculate but I wonder if one of the 3 majors will still be selling records in five years time.
And where it leaves new acts if the business contracts significantly.
(issues for another thread, I guess).

Touring and playing live as much as they can, just like almost any artist under 40 is doing nowadays.

Gary Clark Jr. is a good example, a new album every 3 years to have something fresh and new to play (how much money can he get selling 200-250k worldwide?) and not less than 80 shows per year.

Yep, but on the international chart, there's not a combined chart on Croatia for local and international acts, one chart for local acts and another one for international artists.

I'm talking about real money, you can do the math, $12-15 million split between:

- Band members and musicians on the album

With so many people around you need big numbers to make a profit.[/quote]

These are covers, so profits will be lower, correct? Do they have to pay the estates of the original songwriters?
And no publishing rights, correct?

9th week

Austria #15
Portugal #21
Spain #24

Some little corrections:

The 2nd week chart of Austria was valid for two weeks (1 frozen chart (New Year)), hence as a weekly chart the chart run for Austria is

1-3-3-3-3-6-8-10-15

The chart run for Israel is 1-1-1-10 instead of 1-1-1-x-10 (s. also post from georgelicks from 1/13)

The complete chart run for Croatia is 1-1-1-1-9-16-3-17-1

Well, unless any of the tracks/compositions are in the public domain, then yes publishing royalties will be paid to the various Estates...or anyone else legally able to receive. So a nice windfall for some.

The 4 categories listed above have ALLWAYS been factors of course.
Compared to many industries, the music one is (for a few) still a very profitable occupation to be part of.

Album's 9th week is the first outside the Global Top 10. Media Traffic only publishes Top 10 (and some others outside it, but 'B and L' is not included in the current report). I suppose now we need Georgelicks to have informations about the exact album's positions on the Global Chart (Top 20 or Top 30, etc).

Mediatraffic reports sales outside the Top 10 in the Hompage section:

...'Blue & Lonesome' by Rolling Stones 40,000 / 1,618,000...
They are #13 this week after the XX at #11 (45k) and Adele at #12 (44k)

According to Universal the album has sold 1.725,000 as of January 2, about a 6.5% difference with Mediatraffic.
I guess that Universal tracks sales outside the main market as Ebay, online sellers with no official record on the main circle, sales from music clubs, etc so the additional 107k is a good real estimate.

#16 in the UK during the 10th week selling another 4,500 copies, 306,500 copies sold so far. It was certified PLATINUM last week.

Satisfaction just got a Silver Certification too in the UK for sales over 200,000 since 2004, it's their 4th song to sell over 200k during the digital era after Paint It Black (certified GOLD, over 400k since 2004) and SFTD / Gimme Shelter (SILVER, both over 200k since 2004).
