To RipThisBone:
You can take a look at this site, it has sales for all their albums, singles, videos and even includes streams up to December, previous to the release date of B&L.
[chartmasters.org]
You won't get a better compilation out there.

RipThisBone, according to IFPI/MEDIA TRAFFIC (http://www.mediatraffic.de/top-album-achievements.htm) Rolling Stones is No 8 best selling (album) act, indeed. But not at the same level with the others mentioned by Wikipedia. The rest two on Top 10 Achievements/Albums are U2 (#9) and Queen (#10).
Wikipedia says the Stones have sold over 200 million. I have reasons to believe that their real sales number is moving over 250 million if not 260 (probably Georgelocks knows). And as I see on Wikipedia's "Stones discography" link, the particular source has not a clue about "Exile" reaching #1 on UK Album Chart in 2010...
So, don't trust blindly Wikipedia. Many mistakes and omissions on it...

"I wonder what it is about that song that has made it resonate more with subsequent generations..."
That's an eternal issue, Teddy! And, from my experience, it's not about subsequent generations only. I know many people over 50 years old, who are not into rock music really, adoring "Paint It Black"! Not just liking, but adoring it...
I think it' about a very charming, almost perfect combination. PIB has a very nice rhythm and a very strong feeling, at the same time. Dynamism and melancholy. Insight and screaming. And the intro alone sounds like epitome of the word "inspiration"...

A question for Georgelicks: Are there two albums charts in France? The one I see on Media Traffic (20- 26 January) shows B&L at #16, not at #19 and, according to it, last weeks position was #14. No big deal, of course. Just asking...
