RipThisBone, according to IFPI/MEDIA TRAFFIC (http://www.mediatraffic.de/top-album-achievements.htm) Rolling Stones is No 8 best selling (album) act, indeed. But not at the same level with the others mentioned by Wikipedia. The rest two on Top 10 Achievements/Albums are U2 (#9) and Queen (#10).

Wikipedia says the Stones have sold over 200 million. I have reasons to believe that their real sales number is moving over 250 million if not 260 (probably Georgelocks knows). And as I see on Wikipedia's "Stones discography" link, the particular source has not a clue about "Exile" reaching #1 on UK Album Chart in 2010...

So, don't trust blindly Wikipedia. Many mistakes and omissions on it...

To RipThisBone:

You can take a look at this site, it has sales for all their albums, singles, videos and even includes streams up to December, previous to the release date of B&L.

You won't get a better compilation out there.

Wow, George, fascinating analysis from the website...it really deserves it's own thread. Amazing to see how well a song like Beast of Burden has held up in the digital age, and the relative popularity of Emotional Rescue to Some Girls...who knew?!

And as far as Paint It Black is concerned...biggest stones song ever?!

Album sales (studio/live/compilations)
200.000,000

Singles sales (physical)
69.000,000

Singles sales (digital)
46.000,000

Total: 322.000,000 units

And we're not including streams, only copies sold.

Interesting about the streams. Paint It Black is also the top Stones song among my millennial kids, neither of who played whatever video game it was featured in. I wonder what it is about that song that has made it resonate more with subsequent generations. Also surprised and pleased to see Beast of Burden place so high. Not as surprised to see Gimme Shelter, even before it's recent exposure, as it's rated by many as the top rock song of its era

"I wonder what it is about that song that has made it resonate more with subsequent generations..."

That's an eternal issue, Teddy! And, from my experience, it's not about subsequent generations only. I know many people over 50 years old, who are not into rock music really, adoring "Paint It Black"! Not just liking, but adoring it...

I think it' about a very charming, almost perfect combination. PIB has a very nice rhythm and a very strong feeling, at the same time. Dynamism and melancholy. Insight and screaming. And the intro alone sounds like epitome of the word "inspiration"...

There's TWO charts in France, one with sales only and another one with sales + streams points:

On sales only: 2-2-4-6-9-14-16
On sales + streams: 2-3-4-7-12-14-19

Both are official, but SNEP is using the last one as main, with streaming included.

BBC Radio 2 just added "Just Your Fool" to their A Playlist last week and the song got 14 plays so far:

BBC Radio 6 is also playing the song on their B playlist with 15 plays too:

With so huge support, the song debuted at #38 on the UK Radio Airplay Chart:
[ukairplaychart.com]

NEW 38 THE ROLLING STONES Just Your Fool (Polydor) UMG
61 plays, +91%, 20.4M audience impression, +1,054%

Hate To See You Go reached #78 on the UK Airplay chart on November.

It's not surprise, then, to see Blue and Lonesome at the UK Top 10 after 7 weeks.
