Yep. Throwaway music will be worse, but Kanye West etc. can never beat THE WORST!

Some stats from the US market 2016:

Audio streams reached a new record high of 250.7 billion, up 82.6% over 2015.

Subscription streams grew a staggering 124.2% and accounted for 76.3% of total audio streams in 2016, up from 62.1% of total in 2015.

There were more streams on any given day during 2016 (daily average of 1.2 billion) then there were song downloads for the entire year (734 million).

Over 28 million unique songs were streamed in 2016, 7.3 million unique songs were purchased and 1.4 million unique albums were purchased.

Overall album sales were down 15.6% compared to 2015 (173.4 million in 2016 vs. 205.4 million in 2015).

Digital album sales in 2016 were down over the previous year 19.4% (83.9 million in 2016 vs. 104.1 million in 2015).

Physical album sales were down 11.7% (89.4 million in 2016 vs. 103.1 million in 2015). Physical album sales accounted for 51.6% of all album sales in 2016, the lowest number ever since Soundscan started in 1991.

Vinyl album sales were up 25.9% over 2015 while CD album sales were down 14.0%. Vinyl albums accounted for 8.0% of all physical album sales.

Overall album sales are down 81% since 2005.

As we see, the streaming era has started and nothing can stop it, album sales will be a thing from the past in 5 years from now.

"This week the album is expected to be the #2 or #3 best selling album of the week in the US but with very low sales, around 20-25k, it should be around #10 with streaming and TEA included".

Georgelicks, do you mean the current week, as the first one after holidays, reveals lowest sales overall? Is this a "tradition", a rule, in the US market or globally?

Re: Stones at number One

This current week (ending tomorrow 05/01), and yes is a tradition, sales are terrible on January/February, sadly worse each year.

We're talking about 28-32k for the best selling album (Moana Soundtrack) and 19-22k for the #2 and #3 (Stones and Bruno Mars).
The #1 album on the Billboard 200 next week should be The Weeknd with 55-60k, mostly from streaming and TEA units (15-17k sales, 40-43k streaming/TEA).

On the near future we can expect #1 selling albums not even Top 10 on the Billboard 200 if the streams/TEA are not good, just like B&L this week: #5 on album sales but #15 with combined units.

I knew that sales are dramatically dropped in Greece, but not THAT dramatically, as georgelicks reports. That's one of the effects of the so wild financial crisis, here. And not the most painful effect, from a social point of view, for sure. When B2B came out, there were more than 10 music stores in the center of Athens, now there are two. If I remember correctly B2B had sold over 15,000 copies then, now don't even Alele 's album can reach 3,000...

Anyway, it's nice to see three Stones albums on the same chart, at the same time, as the sales are reduced for all the artists. It's a bit like basketball, you know... Even the score is 51 - 49 instead of 118 - 116, victory remains victory...

...I wonder if that have more to do with the fact that no one is buying CD's anymore, or if they are they order them from amazon.

People I've spoken with have all gotten it on CD from stores and Amazon. CDs still sell.

I usually purchase CDs but I have a hunch the younger generation (under 30) does
not. It would be interesting to see the age breakdown for CD buyers in general.

Yes and older artist like The Stones, etc sell more CD's. And I'm guess Country artist still sell more than rock artist.

I indicated earlier in this topic that we now today 2016/17 can not compare the sales lists of the Stones with the lists of (formerly) B.B etc. Very simple. The great mass download or copied.

Ledies and Gentlemen, "B&L" is at #11 of the World Chart (Media Trafic) for the year 2016, whith these 1,305,000 sales. Amazing for an album that came out 4 weeks before year's end. Yes, sales are biggest during the holidays season but album's performance is still great. Number 11 on Global Chart after only 4 weeks, just amazing...

Even better that Uk End Year Chart (# 17)

I think that goes for other countries as well. The kids don't buy music like we did/do, though. They get it in different ways, but they do listen to it.

I live in (Holland) in a small village on a dike. I am not much in the city. There were a few years ago, approx 4 to 5 CD stores. Now I could only buy the album B & L at a bookstore.

Regarding "streaming", I have a question:

What do this strange new breed of streaming mimi's listen to when the power goes out, the sound of burning candles?

Given the steady decline in sales over the last decade (vinyl slightly bucking the trend), and set to continue. Are any record companies (large and small) actually making a profit these days?
Are they signing many new Acts?

Some sales for Australia's 4th week:

#4 Australia (9,330 copies sold / 50,880 total)

The album is over the Gold level (35,000), maybe it will be certified Gold/Platinum (70,000) at the same time, shipments must be close to that.

Re: Stones at number One
Posted by: laertisflash ()
Date: January 6, 2017 01:37

So, during 4 week B&L has taken 20% of it's total sales (1,305,000) from UK (261,407 units), 19,3% from the USA (252,000), 12,6% from France (164,344), 3,9% from Australia (50,880) and 3,2% from Japan (41,508). These numbers are making 59%. As for the rest 41%, I wonder how huge the contribution of Germany (vast market/strong sales) and the two... epic "# 1-1-1-1" countries (Netherlands and Argentina) is. I really would like to know! Soon or later...

Oh, my god, you're quite right, they do!

Ah, but what if your iPhone and your iPod both need a charge? You were just about to go ahead and do it... but then the power goes out for a few hours. So, then what?

I told you, the sound of burning candles.

Or even the sight of it can lead to meditation of a sort...
