The Stones just Tweeted out that Blue + Lonesome is #1 on ITunes in 40 countries.
I understand that isn't the official chart, but still a great sign

They were, they are...and they will be our number one forever!

My hope was that a blues album would do for the Stones what American Recordings and Great American Songbook did for Johnny Cash and Rod Stewart, respectively. All of them are the kind of simple, easy=to-sell concept albums that tend to do well for classic artists. (RCA is currently enjoying a similar kind of success with the Elvis and Royal Philharmonic series.)

It'll be interesting to see how this affects the new studio album, as the label will probably be more than happy to just release a Blue And Lonesome 2. Mick also has to realize that the Stones have effectively gotten their "cool" back and they didn't need Jack White or any other flavor of the month to do it. Will the new album continue the stripped-down approach? Could it potentially be a compromise- a mix of new songs and more dirty blues?

I'd love to see this bring the Stones full circle, allowing them to hit the studio for a week or two each year in order to bang out a collection of new tracks, blues, and Chuck Berry. They're already back to playing mini-tours throughout the year. How amazing would it be for a new Stones album to become an annual event again?

The album is running out of stock on several stores in the UK, there are reports on Twitter about sold outs on Amazon and HMV. Amazing.

Went to my local Best Buy here in the Northwest (USA) and they had "just sold out" of it.. was surprised. Buying a few for X-mas presents, and had to go to store thirty miles away to get. Which I gladly did, listening to my copy there and back!

Loving this album and the success it's having.

"Figuring out when and how to release it was trickier. "I'm saying to the record company," says Jagger, "'Can you make this pop music if you want? Is it marketable?'"

Are they still with Universal? There have been some great CD and DVD releases since they joined Universal. For once it looks like some executive actually did a great job!

It's also showing as "backordered" on BestBuy.com.

Amazon (US) as well, which now says "Usually ships within 1 to 2 months"!!!

Now they must consider this unexpected success in the optical of a new album with original material. People still love 'old school' stuff.

If sold out it means they could have sold more. This could cost them the no. 1 spot maybe due to not printing enough copies...

Hope I am wrong.

What do you think Mr. Licks? You being amazed at the sales so far says enough.

Aha... more than expected.

Could it be a number 3 entry in the USA?

Number 1 in The UK?

#1 in the UK for sure, it looks like a #3 entry on the U.S.
Selling 115-118k on a first week will put you at #1 on about 45 weeks on the U.S, again the record company went for big sales on December over a #1 chart position on September/October selling half of these numbers.

Blue & Lonesome is their first high profile release on December since Beggars Banquet.

This is great for the Stones to be on top again in some charts, but also very nice for the families of these Blues artists that will hopefully see some royalties that are well-deserved.
