Who knows what this track is all about?
I remember asking a friend at school and he said it's about a monkey man wanting a monkey woman - in other words, two of a kind.
Is it as simple as that?

'monkey' meant heroin habit in jazz slang years ago
to me that song is a standout example of Stones groove from Charlie and Keith.
that peaceful sunrise of an intro gets that groove going and escalates. The whole song then becomes this stunning thing that is full of humor and groove.

My friend and I, around the time of Emotional Rescue, loved Monkey Man so much that we used to call in to the local radio station and request that they play it, all the time. It caught on, they started to play it quite frequently, without us calling it in. Either others started calling it in, or the DJs must have liked it.
