Does Brian even play on "Satisfaction"?
Date: November 12, 2016 12:19

What do you guys think? I was just reading in one book about the recording(s) of this classic track, and them listening; I wonder if this is all Keith and Stu in the melodic dept.

Always assumed it was Brian on the acoustic guitar!

My question is why shouldn't he not been on this record?

He also played harmonica on the original Chess recording.
They mimed to that recording on Shindig! on May 20, 1965.

20th May: US TV (ABC) 'Shindig!', Los Angeles. Host: Jimmy O' Neill.
- Down The Road Apiece (Don Raye) -live; Billy Preston on keyboards
- Little Red Rooster (Willie Dixon) -live vocals on prepared backing track
- The Last Time (MJ/KR) -live vocals on prepared backing track
- Play With Fire (Nanker Phelge) -live vocals on prepared backing track
- Satisfaction (MJ/KR) -mimed to rejected version I from Chess 10th May 1965
Note: Telecast on the 26th May.
The backing tracks to which the Stones were miming to were
recorded two days prior to the telerecording at RCA Studios, L.A.

The recording of "satisfaction" seems to have gone in stages. First it was recorded kind of as a country thing. The fuzz guitar, and redone drums were added later on top of that old basic track. It stands to reason that it is Keith playing that original acoustic guitar.

I recall reading in Death of a Rolling Stone it mentioned something to the effect that Brian wasn't happy with Satisfaction because all he played was the basic acoustic guitar.

He voted for it as the next single, against Mick and Keith!

Maybe he liked the song but was disappointed that all he played was acoustic guitar on it, whereas the previous single, The Last Time, he played the main riff?

On don't believe at all that's Jones on acoustic. That's Richards to my ears.

It's hard to tell, imo, but it has never been confirmed that Brian played the acoustic that wound up on the recording.

well, then, would it stand to reason that the electric guitar was the basic track guitar, since it starts the song? And the acoustic was added later. I can't see how they could have overdubbed the instrument that starts the whole song.

They could have had an "in-count" that they wiped later..

See, Mathijs agrees. The fuzz that starts the song is very easy to O/D. And it's documented pretty well that they added that track later.
So at earlier date when they first recorcded this new Keith song, there is no way that Brian would be playing the main guitar
My point about the thread is more that it hit me that, unless Brian was playing a featured part, a hook, his input was minimal even in early days. Maybe to them, the earky band, who were actually playing live with him it was a whole other story, but as far as recordings go, as far as a strong second guitar goes, it s almost negligible.

Except for the songs where he played the tremolo rhythm guitar (Off The Hook etc.). Those parts stood out, imo.

Very true. After I posted I started thinking about "Mona" and "19th Nervous B'down".
