OT - Favourite Stephen King novel
Posted by: tomcasagranda ()

I know Steve likes the Stones, and has quoted them in his books.

Does anyone else have a favourite King novel, or film adaptation ? I like The Dead Zone, IT, and The Stand.

Thoughts ?

Enjoyed Under The Dome (book, haven't watched the TV version), 11/22/63 and From a Buick 8.

Been thinking of The Dead Zone recently...

... in which the protagonist foresees the evil future of a man who would become President.

The only encounter I've had with King's work was acquiring a secondhand copy of The Eyes of the Dragon as a child on holiday and devouring it within a couple of days.

I haven't thought about that book in years but can now recall the cover and the dank smell of the pages. The perfect accompaniment to a winter trip to a small coastal town.

.....

... anything he wrote before quitting booze and drugs. His "clean" output is (imho) boring and mediocre while his "loaded" production (everything until the late 80's) is genuinely scary.

One recommendation? Pet Sematary! thumbs up

"The Stand" is one of the best books I've ever read, and his collaboration with Peter Straub, "The Talisman" is also one of my favorites.

Great piece in 11/22/63 when him singing Honkey Tonk lets the cat out the bag.

IT is a favorite, but just about anything until the mid 90s. And a lot of stuff after as well.

Salem's Lot is my favorite. The Shining is a close second. All of King's work up to about Four Past Midnight I can ready anytime.

The Dead Zone is a good film adaptation, I also loved t.v. film version of Salem's Lot.

I enjoyed Golden Years many years ago.
Misery is the best.

Early stuff like 'Tommyknockers' and 'It' were great, but also because of the age I was when I read them.
'Needful Things' was also very good. "Shining" too. And 'The Stand' - but ONLY the book; the TV special was awful.
He started getting really boring somewhere. There was one book about an Indian Totem thing which was jaw droppingly boring.

But through him I came upon Peter Stroub who IMO wrote some really good stuff like 'Koko' and'Mystery'.

Salem's Lot,Bag Of Bones (The Our Kid-quote is priceless!), The Shining, Pet Cemetary and Stark are the best ones. Marathon March is nice too (I think it's a Bachman book). He really is The Glimmer Twin of fictional litterature!!!

thumbs up His girlfriend's interrogation of him about the song and how he knows about it is great: "that's a filthy song", "I heard it on the radio", "they would never play that on the radio"...excellent!

Took the words right out of my mouth. "It" was good as well but the other two I actually go back and re-read from time to time. Stay away for the movies for both The Stand and It though... It's time you'll never get back.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Same goes for the King-endorsed TV adaptation of "The Shining"... eye rolling smiley

The first Dark Tower novel is brilliant. Very sparse, not a lot of over the top horror.

The Stand is a classic as is Salem's Lot. My two favorites.

Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption (short story) are great and the best movie adaptations of his work (Dead Zone is up there too! And very appropriate viewing for the post-election therapy).

Agreed! I was channel surfing the other night before bed and found the ending of Shawshank on broadcast tv. Ended up staying awake past bedtime just to watch it. Even with commercials and "edited for time, etc" it's still a great movie. Haven't seen Green Mile in a while but it too is excellent.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Salem's Lot would be my fave followed by The Shining. If you have read and enjoyed "The Shining", the sequel "Dr. Sleep" is worth reading as well. Currently I'm reading "Revival".

You're right about Dr Sleep, the first King I've read and enjoyed in a while, now going to start on the JFK book. Like a lot of others, everything up to the 90s is pretty good, IT is my favorite, one that can be truly scary if read late at night.

I read all 14 of his novels that were written between 1974 and 1987.

I have several favorites from that era:

1. The Shining
2. The Stand
3. Firestarter
4. Dark Tower: The Gunslinger
5. Misery
6. Tommyknockers

I have not read any novels that he wrote after 1987.

I thought the Doctor Sleep book was o.k, but obviously nothing compared to 'The Shining.'

'Under The Dome' was one of his more recent books that I enjoyed.

So many that I love, I can't choose a favourite. He is a truly great storyteller!

You might start with the "Night Shift" short stories collection.
[en.wikipedia.org])

At that time (1969-1977) King was still caring about style and litterature.
Later on (when money came) his style became appaling and he simply became a storyteller. A mighty efficient one yes but his books were hardly litterature, they were more like expanded movie scripts.
