Try the UICY-40011: [www.cdjapan.co.jp] .

Your CD-Player should be able to play CD-R to play also the Platinum-SHM.

Don't waste your money on fancy Japanese stuff. Just head on ebay and get old-good CBS CD.

I agree. They're actually quite similar sound wise. The real improvement is with the SACD version.

Regarding your question, glimmertwin1, I think this new reissue series is from the 2009 remasters because every album is included from Sticky fingers to Shine A Light. The flat transfers from 2011 included albums from SF to Dirty Work.

To be honest, I think I got enough copies of SF now. Time to put the foot down!

Seems to me it's cheaper this time around. Maybe it's a nice price issue?

For what it's worth, I've bought 4 Japanese SHMs to date at the recommendation of a friend who loves them. They seem to vary in quality. The 1st I got was David Bowie's Aladdin Sane which sounds great. Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland sounds stunning! I did get a Sticky Fingers Deluxe set, and it sounds really good, but not sure I hear much difference. And The Who Who's Next is the one that's a bit disappointing - I was hoping it would blow me away, but while it sounds good, it's not like OMG this sounds amazing.

Keep in mind, SHM has nothing to do with the mastering of the album - it has to do with the Super High Material the discs are made of, which 'supposedly' equate to better sound. There's lots of discussions out there as to the merits of SHM (and SACD) (or lack thereof!). The SHMs which are now out of print can become pricey - $50 and (way) up in many cases, so they can be collectible. And they are nice 'looking' packages in general. Some may see them as 'novelties.' So overall (and I'm not a techie or audiophile, but I have a decent sound system and know what sounds good 'to my ears'). IMO it's worth grabbing one or two to decide for yourself if you hear the difference, especially if you can grab them for not huge money (say, $20/$30).

Regarding SHM-CD, to me it always comes down to what mastering was used in the first place.

Stones SHM-CD are either made from the 2009 remasters (loud and compressed beyond belief) or the 2011 remasters (flat transfers from the original master tapes with no additional tweaks). The latter were first released on SACD and later on SHM-CD.

As I don't think an already bloated remaster can be improved by a "super high material" (SHM) of any sort, when buying a SHM-CD one should first look for infos on the mastering used. Usually this kind of information can be found on the "obi" itself. Plus, in case of a SHM-CD made from a the 2011 flat remasters, if you look carefully you should find (in English) "HR (High Resolution Cutting)" written on the back of the obi.

Scan of Exile On Main St SHM-CD "obi": (important informations are within red circles)
On the right it's written "2011 DSD Master", which clearly means this SHM-CD is made from the 2011 remaster.
