Guilty Pleasures - Stones and Other - Confessions and Acts of Contrition

So tonight I was twiddling with my mp3 collection. I use MediaMonkey, which is a fantastic mp3 player for the PC platform. For example, you can get tags from filenames, or conversely, you can use tags to generate a new and improved filename.

For the fun of it I decided to make a guilty pleasures playlist and so I thought that I would share some of my guilty pleasures with the IORR gang and see if others would do the same. I feel so guilty that I have to offer up a little blurb on each song in order to avoid the doghouse.

Let's start with a disclaimer and say that this is all in fun and there is no such thing as the "right" good taste or bad taste or an "acceptable" or "unacceptable" guilty pleasure. My guilty pleasure might be your "legitimate" song and vice-versa. The only rules are that there are no rules and you are supposed to have fun. There is only one exception to the rules: Back to Zero cannot be a guilty pleasure.

Rolling Stones - Out of Time

Yes the "fake" Rolling Stones which is just a Mick Jagger vocal laid on top of an orchestral track with all those pretty bells and female backing vocals. I love it and give me 50 lashes, I don't care!

Melissa Manchester - Pretty Girls

Some jaws may drop. I even have the extended version and I can't explain it. I sway to it and I love it and I am hooked to the hook.

Baby, Baby - The Vibrators

Who knew that punks could be so aw shucks sweet. It's just great and I am haunted with feelings of guilt.

Rah Band - Clouds Across the Moon

One of the fakest interplanetary voyages you will ever take and dripping with Saccharine.

You Didn't Have To Be So Nice - The Lovin' Spoonful

I bop to this and I love the good vibes.

Little Peggy March - I Will Follow Him

This is the earliest song I can remember hearing on the radio, and the hook is still as fresh as daisies!

Lio - Les Brunes Comptent Pas Pour Des Prunes

Hilarious video and smart hot French babe that knew how to laugh at herself and make a pop tune for the ages. You must bop when you listen.

Oliver - Good Morning Starshine

It's Up With People on steroids.

Brandy (You're a Fine Girl) - Looking Glass

If only it was 1972 forever.

Serge Gainsbourg - Je t'aime moi non plus

Naughty naughty. Even if you don't understand a single word you know what it is all about. Hypnotized and fantasizing.

The Carpenters - Superstar

Back to that comfort zone in the early 70s listening to the MOR station on the AM radio before going to sleep. Just awesome.

I don't really get the whole concept of guilty pleasures. I don't see why you would feel guilty for enjoying any of those songs, many of which I enjoy too! I tend to think that there are some songs I love that some other people are missing out on because they think they're beneath them. (Like the entire Monkees catalogue, which contains some awesome pop songs.) But if anyone should be feeling guilt, or shame, or embarrassment, it's them, not me! Or you!

I guess my guilty pleasure from the Stones catalog would be Poison Ivy. I know I should resist but sometimes I just can't help myself.

I also occasionally listen to George McCrae's Rock Your Baby and even Duran Duran. I feel totally naked now...

The Monkees are well 'revalued' in recent years. It's actually cool to like them.
Rightfully so, great music.

Rock Your Baby rocks! Some consider that song the start of disco.

Hues Corporation - Rock the Boat. Aaaaah!

MFSB - TSOP

So do I, but I can't fathom it being called a "guilty pleasure."

Close to You & We've Only Just Begun by the Carpenters would probably be put on my list by others but I'm with Aquamarine on not really subscribing to the overall concept. In fact, when "Close to You" came up in "shuffle" mode and my daughter questioned me about it's inclusion last summer, I told her that "It might be the best song that's played in the last hour. Listen." At the end of the song, her reply was along the lines of "Yeah. She can sing."

Another that doesn't fit in with my normal playlist would be Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of "Over The Rainbow".

I also like a couple of Air Supply tunes and some of the schmaltzy Hollies tunes. No apologies though.

Also "Build Me Up Buttercup" is such a fun song that it makes me smile whenever I hear it.

"The Rainbow Connection" by Kermit the Frog

Peace,

I made a mix that I call "Early Cheese" of all the radio tunes that resonated with me in the late 70's and early 80's, when I was between 7 and 10 years old. There are a lot of ELO songs on there, for instance. And a Bob Segar song. And Billy Joel. I think I even put a Doobie Brothers song on there. Also songs from the Moody Blues mostly awful 1981 album, 'The Present.'

I totally love this mix, one of my favorites that I have made. Especially late at night in the car when I am all reflective and weepy. Listening to these songs transports me to the Carter/Reagan era when cars were still big, it still snowed a lot, and children and dogs ran free in the neighborhood.

Most of these are from the early-mid '70's & pre-early teen years - I plead not guilty.

Anne Murray - Snowbird
John Denver- Sunshine on My Shoulders
Loggins and Messina - House at Pooh Corner
Sammy Davis Jr. - Theme from Baretta
Michael Jackson- Ben
The Carpenters - all of their greatest hits (especially Top of the World)
Righteous Brothers - Rock and Roll Heaven
Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song
Glen Campbell - Rhinestone Cowboy
Jim Stafford- Spiders and Snakes
Pablo Cruise - Love Will Find a Way
Abba - Dancing Queen
Barry Manilow - Mandy
Bill Conti - Theme From "Rocky" (Gonna Fly Now)
Vicki Lawrence - The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia
Olivia Newton John and John Travolta- You're the One That I Want
Neil Sedaka - Breaking Up is Hard to Do (both '62 and '75 versions)
Chuck Mangione - Feels So Good
Elton John and Kiki Dee - Don't Go Breaking My Heart
George Burns - Fixing a Hole (Beatles cover)

Mariachi music.

No idea what they are singing but it all sounds so happy and upbeat, great to wind down on my way home in my car.

thumbs upsmileys with beer

Similar subject/experience: While driving to work the other day I had Bob Marley's Greatest Hits album playing and had the thought that I/people should listen to Reggae music every day as it was "hard to be unhappy while listening to that music". Then I paid attention to the lyrics and was reminded how many Reggae tunes were actually protest tunes lyrically. I went back to focusing on the music rather than the lyrics and showed up to work happy regardless of how much time I got to spend in gridlock that particular morning! Think I may have to try some "Mariachi Therapy" tonight!

Peace,
Mr DJA

thumbs up

I've always enjoyed a good German polka.
Similar to Mariachi, not sure what they're singing about (I assume beer, pretzels, women, dancing, and partying?)...always uplifting, and the instrumentals are great also.
And yodeling...can't really go wrong with that. winking smiley
