What's your favorite Live version of ADTL?
Posted by: hopkins ()

One of my very favorite songs. The exiles version is tops but I'm thinking live.
This has always been the classic romping rolling perfection in my ears and life:

this is the real Mccoy. It is relentless and perfect in every way. THE ultimate imo.

then somewhat unexpectedly, 33 years later they roar this one outta the cannon:

Other ADTL versions you'd care to write about or post a link for?
I think '75 wasn't that good & '78 was really good, but it's hard to tell from the audio quality, and it's hard to tell what's been 'fixed'...
...or when it worked or didn't from night to night on any given tour...so I'm curious, thank you.

ADTL live is a great example of the Stones at their best. It's hard for me to pick a favorite but maybe my top two would be versions from 1972-73 followed by 1978 as seen in SGLIT. Pure energy!

This is one of my favourite songs to see/hear them do live, and to be honest - I don't think I've heard what I would call a 'bad' version of it yet. It just seems to be one song that they never ever manage to (occasionally admittedly) make a complete train-wreck out of !

It's almost always great. Paradoxically, the Brussels versions might be one of the poorer ones, while the SAL-version is excellent.

I've been fortunate getting ADTL almost as many times as the warhorses, on the shows that I have attended. It's one of my favourite songs.

My top 3:

Fort Worth 1972 (Ladies & Gentlemen)
Detroit 1978 (Handsome Girls)
Oslo 1995 (All Down The Line In Oslo)

But nothing beats the original studio version.

Seattle'81 (Oct. 15) a scorching version and proof the 68-72 material doesn't need Taylor to be beautifully played.

Isn't Bill's bass a tad out of tune? All Down The Line - The Rolling Stones live in Seattle (10/15/1981) Still a great version, also like the LSTNT version a lot.

As for latter day versions Circus Krone 2003 is great and also actually First O2 show in 2012.

It's hard to beat that one, it has the energy from 1975 but with better vocals from Mick. thumbs up

Love it in '78, esp the Detroit version, but the Official Live '72 is awesome. Not on;y the music but the video is the Stones at their absolute pinnacle.
The whole sequence at around 3:40 when the horns take over, and Jagger starts bumping those hips is fantastic.

I listened to that 81 version, and the Bass does sound out.

They have done lots of great versions on stage, but the Shine-A-Light-version reigns supreme.

One of the best examples of the Stones being the Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band In The World and the version from Fort Worth reigns supreme. It's the sound of the Stones heading down the tracks at full speed, all cylinders firing, coal shuttle full and blue skies above.

Ronnie does a good job mimicking Mick Taylor, but he will never do this song like Taylor did.

I can't see why Taylor's slide playing would be ''better'' on this song. They're just different. Ronnie is not going for that overblown Les Paul sound when he's playing slide. He's going for more of a ''dirty'' soulful approach, and does it well.

Especially in later years we've heard lots of great tasteful slide-playing by Ronnie Wood.

Few performances are played with the authority of this band (MSG '72).

I love every version I have heard from 1973 and most from 1972, including your great Texas clip. The song changed a lot in 78 to be a bit more raw, kind of adding a (minor) punkish edge.

But the Beacon version is just a guitar trainwreck. Keith sounds horrible and Ronnie, well...is not at his best.

The best versions have Keith playing a truly hard driving rhythm like a train roaring thru and Taylor (at least in 72 and 73) just wailing away on slide. I love Exile (easily my favorite Stones record), but when I hear the live versions of that era it makes it seem the studio version of ADTL is too restrained and polished.

So I don't get slammed about Ronnie: I will say his playing in 2015 was way better than it has been, maybe in all the time he's been with the Stones. That he took some of the iconic Taylor leads in CYHMK and really played them with power and precision was impressive.

Ladies & Gents...awesome.

Ft Worth 78...awe inspiring.

Shine a light version...awful.

PS: 95 club gigs...honorable mention.

Love them all, but the pacing on this one is I think closer to the original. I remember watching this for the first time and thinking that this was the number that they really nailed on SAL.

Cheers, ya'll!

Not the absolute best, but the Beacon 06 one on Shine A Light is fiery! Then again, I love a lot of the versions on that record and I know its not everyone's cup of tea. I think its a good representation of late era Stones playing great.

What annoys me the most about SAL in general is that audio on the dvd/bluray has a semitone too high pitch! Listen to the ADTL video posted from SAL, Mick sounds like freakin Donald Duck!

The soundtrack cd has the right pitch but they messed everything up and ruined the audio for the dvd. Maybe is just an issue with the PAL dvd/bluray, but I've heard it's the same with the NTSC releases. Makes the whole thing unwatchable IMO.
