Roger Daltrey

I was just listening to the infamous Howard Stern interview where Roger and Pete were supposed to be on but Pete walked out.
I don't know too much about Roger Daltrey but I always had the impression he's a nice, good guy. I was wondering what his relationship to the stones and other contemporaries is. In the Stern interview, recorded around the time Paul McCartney went through his divorce, and they mentioned it and asked Roger if he knows Paul and he said that he doesn't really know him but met him. I was quite surprised by this as I assumed all those guys knew each other pretty well just from back in the day.
Is he friendly with the Stones? I always thought he would be an amazing guest star at their concerts.

Cheers,
Wuudy

I would agree with you that I'd assume they were all pretty friendly, having been big in the same era and playing similar styles of music. But then when I think about it further, his response makes perfect sense. They probably aren't "friends". They've probably crossed paths a few times and are obviously familiar with each others work. But I feel these bands probably don't "look up" to these people so its not as big a deal when they meet. They can admire their work, but its not like Roger Daltrey's biggest moment is meeting Paul McCartney. It does seem weird, but nah, I would assume there's no big relationship there. I would question whether anyone in this Desert group would consider anyone else of those guys "friends". They are definitely all peers, and some have worked together before, but it also seems like they all have very much their own careers and don't keep in touch with anyone thats not in their band.

I've seen photos of Keith and Macca together. At Keith's holiday home I think. I was a bit surprised to be honest.

I may be wrong, but Jagger and Townsend would appear to be good friends, judging by footage on Being Mick.

What a drag it is gettin' old

Yes Pete and Mick are friends. They were neighbors in Richmond for many years.

Friends? Mick hasn´t any friends. IMO, he does not know the meaning of the word. He´s only friends with himself. That has always been that way. The only thing Mick Jagger cares about is Mick Jagger. Anyone should have noticed that by now.

Mick is certainly friends with Macca. There is a lot of stories and pics of them together. The Beatles and The Stones were/are friends.

Interesting about Daltry and McCartney. I know Macca and Pete are friends and have supported each other throughout the years. And Pete has played on the Wings Back to the Egg (Rockestra Theme and So Glad to See You Hear Tonight).

I never heard of Daltrey and Mick/the Stones being close. I think there was always a rivalry there, especially after Woodstock when Roger's star was in the ascendency.

Townshend said Keith taught him the windmill-move in the 60s, so I reckon they were a bit close.

HMS seems to be on a roll this morning. A roll down a steep hill.

I usually do not get into observations about celebs and famous people based only on some reading, 2nd hand stories and maybe once or twice seeing them buying coffee in Starbucks. However in regards to Daltrey – I’ve seen him several times during sound checks, as well as heard stories from other people who followed the late TW tours + in recent years their shows in the UK and Ireland were really laid back and in some way you felt as if they went back to the early days. It seems that Daltrey kept much of what some Britons describe as “working class values” – really down to earth and in some way looks like a cool grandpa… I can imagine him visiting the Charring cross collectors fair sitting on a stool examining some old postcards with a magnifying glass (well… might have gone a bit far here). Its actually quite easy to understand why he had little interest in hanging around with rock superstars.

Just my opinion.

Are you actually trying to say that Jagger couldn't be friends with Roger because there was a rivalry despite him being friends with Townsend,Bowie, and the Beatles?

IS this another example of people thinking Jagger always worried about other rock stars being big?

The only thing I ever heard Jagger say about Roger is in one interview he did ask why the media pays so much attention to his personal life but never pay attention to Daltrey's.

There are a lot hints that indicate that this observation isn´t dull at all. He´s not interested in friendship, he prefers to be surrounded by bootlickers half of his age.

If Mick would prefer journalists to pay less attention to his private life, he should have stayed married.....and remained faithful.
Like Daltrey and of course Charlie Watts.
Very naive of Mick to expect the media to treat him otherwise.

I don't think Daltrey even hung out with the guys in his own band!
Although him and Pete appear to have developed a real friendship since they've been on their own.
I would second what wrocklaw said (above): Daltrey seems to be down to earth and focused on doing his job, whatever it is -- singing or acting.

Read that Roger and Wilko Johnson did the opening theme music for the new Clarkson version of Top Gear, whatever they are calling the new show.

Have a listen to the interview. It's painful in many ways but that's because of Stern and his side kick, but Daltrey really comes off as being a proper nice down to earth guy. He said he has lived in the same house for forty years, when asked about his wealth he says he doesn't need much money to live and he speaks very nicely about Pete and defends him when the child porn situation comes up in the beginning.

With being friends to his peers I meant that of course everybody has their close friends who they hang out with regularly but you can also be friends, friendly with your peers who you, especially in the past, run into a lot and are playing on the same bill with. I assume they all are to some extend but they don't go all "American" on it where the celebrities pretend to be everybody's best friend.

I remember reading in either Ian McLagan or Bill Wyman's book that Wyman and a few others came back from the states and went to some record company christmas party and bumped into the Who guys and had a great time catching up.

Cheers,
Wuudy

Daltrey and Macca must have met a few times--- didn't McCartney write a song for one of Daltreys solo albums back in the 70"s ?

He saw Keith do the windmill while watching a stones show in the early 60's, purely random ....
