Love this album, Mick and Keith are obviously working together here, and for the first time since Bill left they are playing like a band again.

Yes, it's too long but that's OK. If you're only going to release an album every decade then put as many songs on it as you like. Now a days we can just push a button to the next track.

The lyrics in general don't compare to the great songs of the past, but again, that's Ok. They're not 25 anymore and are writing about what they see and feel.
Actually I find the lyrics compelling. I think it's Jagger's most confessional writing.

Good grooves and heart felt performances.

I hate to say it, but I'd rather hear the eight best songs from this album live instead of the old standards.

Kudos to Keith for his lead on It Won't Take Long and his song This Place is Empty.

In my mind it's the best since Tatoo You, maybe even Some Girls.

Only time will really give us a chance to see where this album stacks up against the classics.

Do you actually have an interest in the Stones, lucas? Or are you just fixated on me....I thought my wife was alone in that category.

While we're on the subject of FILLERS I did listen to the Satanic Majesties album today and my conclusion is that this particular cd is a @#$%&' filler with the exceptions of 2000 Man, She's A Rainbow and 2000 Light Years.
Gomper has got to be the biggest shite ever written by the Stones. Just goddamned awful is what comes to mind. Too much spliff I reckon.

If you really think RJ is filler, & are not just saying it to be annoying...then I doubt I can listen to any of your opinions any longer.

I think RJ is filler. I mean it AND I'm also saying that to be annoying.

I think anyone who really thinks it is a great Stones' song is deaf and blind and duped. Just cos it sounds rocky doesn't make it great. If Jagger took a nursery rhyme and added dirty lyrics, raunchy guitar and thrashing drums - would that make it a good Stones song? Not imo. Actually, at least nursery rhymes have more melody, albeit somewhat banal and childish, (cf LIS!).

I also that think Gomper is good.

Infact, while we are not on the subjct of ABB, I used to think Buttons was bad, (no really strong songs as there are on Satanics). But now with benefit of the last fifteen years of rather formularised output, I think buttons is great - purely for energy and spontaneity/immediacy.

Gomper and Satanics generally was essential, for them to grow out of the mid-sixties popism.

It's a great album but these are my favorites:

01. Rough Justice (great rocker)
02. Let Me Down Slow (again Mick's singing!)
03. Rain Fall Down (great dance)
04. This Place Is Empty (finally a pianobased song)
05. She Saw Me Coming (great rhythm, great guitarplaying)
06. Biggest Mistake (great melody and playing, classic Stones country)
07. Oh No Not You Again (hard rocking, but no interesting soloing of Keith)
08. Laugh I Nearly Died (great atmosphere and the best singing of Mick, also the best song)
09. Look What The Cat Dragged In (great singing, great melodies, superb guitarplaying by Ronnie and great drums/percussion and for me the best song of the album!!)
10. Driving Too Fast (hard rocking)
11. Infamy (great singing by Keith, but I still don't prefer the harp in it.. it sounds strange... this song should have horns instead, live they do play horns on it!)

Yes, I agree FSW; Gomper is epical.
Satanic Majesties is insanely underrated.
Thousands (well, dozens... ) of True Fans will object.

But RJ is a thrill.

With "I think anyone who really thinks it is a great Stones' song is deaf and blind and duped" I think you are provokíng, and in an wide aware way.

And: "Just cos it sounds rocky doesn't make it great. If Jagger took a nursery rhyme and added dirty lyrics, raunchy guitar and thrashing drums - would that make it a good Stones song? Not imo. Actually, at least nursery rhymes have more melody, albeit somewhat banal and childish,"

... - That could go for BS & Star Star too; plus a truckload of other Stones-songs to. Hell; we´re not talkin´ Nobel prize in Literature here.
Go with the musical flow. FSW, turn on, tune in, drop out... And dance like a beast!!! It´s a classic before its release, and I wanna be on the right side of the line some 15-20-25 yeras from now, when people talk about them "Stones, who rocked like angry kids while over 60... ". You dont even have to compare with the other 1940´s-rockers (nearly unfair a comparison): But also with younger acts, like U2, Metallica - or even younger like Green Day, Marilyn Manson, name anyone...

On first 2 listenings I thought it was good, but not outstanding. I did like it, but I thought it was no Some Girls or Tattoo.
Something happened on the 3rd listen, and it blew my mind. I have now listened about 6 times and it gets better every play. I dont know if its better than Girls or Tattoo, but it is easily the best since Tattoo. Every song is fairly decent, and even the filler is probably stronger than most tracks in the past 20 years. Some observations:

Dangerous Beauty is about that female soldier who did the sex poses with the tortured Iraquies. I forgot her name.

LWTCDI- real fun guitar..reminds me of updated Between the Buttons era.

All and all, the album surpasses expectations. I knew we would never see anything like the 1968-1972 era, but if you can get past that, we have a damn fine album infront of us.

They've done themselves proud on this one. Just wish it had been a four-way collaboration instead of mainly Mick & Keith. Of course it's always mainly Mick & Keith isn't it? I can't wait to get the CD in my hands.

I have NOT heard the complete album yet, but I have opinions on four songs:

Oh No,Not You Again: this song is a loser. When they played it in Hartford I thought from the early riffs I was listening to I Wanna Be Your Man.

Rough Justice: nothing special at all

Back of My Hand: Super song. They no longer need to fall back on covers like Little Red Rooster, Mannish Boy or I Just Wanna Make Love to You. All of those are great, but BoMH is their equal.

Infamy: Unbelievable Keith classic in the making. Right up there with Before They Make Me Run, Happy and Little T&A, and I never thought I'd see a new Keith song this good. The background rhythm will stick in your head for days.

from these posts, it looks like the track the garners the most praise is 'laugh? i nearly died' ... and i have to agree. what an incredible song!! jagger's singing is so passionate and heartfelt. the production is immaculate, but not overproduced. and such atmosphere!! blues, jazz, gospel, r&b ... it's all in there, transformed by the alchemy of the stones at their finest. plus the lyrics are way cool, and even the title is strikingly original.

i daresay this song is as good as anything the stones have ever recorded. (and coming from me, that is a huge statement!)

Baboon,

No, BS, Star Star and many others are great tunes in their own right. RJ is just not an interesting riff, tune, melody etc. It is not enough for it to have 'rude' lyrics (OOHH how shocking) and loud drums etc etc. You can do that with any banal song.

If I am meaning to provoke, it is simply to wake people up to the fact that "All that rocks is not gold". It is a vacuous piece of tripe. Jagger tossed some stupid words together, (which are not really saying anything either), "It's rough justice on yer"....yeah, meaning what exactly?......and he could hardly find any sort of tune. The guitars have no recognisable role or riff. Mere padding. How can anyone be taken-in by this?

All I can say is, top marks on sound/production. Best sound since Undercover/Dirty Work. Why has it taken twenty years?!

Lyndie England. You're also 100% right on that one

Funny how with all the media furore about a certain other and far inferior song on the album, they missed this one...

Dangerous Beauty doesn't do anything for me...another throwaway rocker, IMO. Keith's attempt at lead is painful to the ears....

"Dangerous Beauty is about that female soldier who did the sex poses with the tortured Iraquies. I forgot her name."

Hi,

I don't mean to get political and all, but, "tortured Iraquies"? I don't think that "tortured" is the appropriate word to describe the pictures that were taken. If you want "tortured," try reading about the atrocities that Saddaam Hussain did on his own people. I don't mean to justify the very touchy subject of the war in the Middle East, but this man apparently defined the term "torture" and then some.

Take care,
Dan

gazza, i've tried to listen many times to DB trying to like it but i really don't understand what you find in that song. While most rockers on ABB are a little bit messy and noisy with riffs either sharp AND torn (that is why i like them as i think its stones as i know them and love them) DB has a structure very similar to things like I GO Wild with controlled if sharp riff and strong beat behind AND very separated. Also Mick's voice is on top of everything instead of being muddled in between as in ONNYA. More, the refrain is again a 2notes one like YGMR, IGW, OOC. Second guitar is doing a pretty good job and the second half of the song is more jamming but...

Hi,
have heard the whole album once and still listening...
my first impression..without going into details...without analyzing the songs ,
without judging the songwriting or the way the instruments are used...
with FIRST IMPRESSION I mean what this album makes me FEEL like, WHILE I am hearing it:
A BIGGER BANG is awesome !!!
...it goes right into my heart ..it touches me from my left head to my right feet...it wants to make me dance and sing..it makes me feel totaly lost....yeah..I am lost in the album...and I love the groove...and I love its diversity...it is a kind of retrospective of 40 years Rolling Stones at their best.
u have the rockers..the ballads..the blues..the funky style..
the obscure ones..it is so Stoneslike...but not as kind of repeating themselfes..oh no, it is typical Stones sound at its best in 2005.
I love to hear the songs....and to realize that these are brandnew songs.
First I felt this album sounds kind of 70 soundlike...but then I began to realize what Mathys said: ABB sound kind of Undercoverlike without the typical 80 soundinfluence.
and it makes me wish that the Stones shlould play at least 10 songs of ABB LIVE as well...they seem to sound supercool playd live.
So I say: A BIGGER BANG is a supercool Stones album !!!
....if it is a classic or even more.....
well, Time will tell....after all this is a first impression...
my final verdict will be after hearing it 15-20 times..but I do have the deep feeling that this album has the potencial to become a real classic...
without saying, this is the best since...
but it is damned good...indeed.
I was hoping for such a kind of album....but had little doubts if the Stones themselfes wanted to make such a earthy sounding album.
They did....and it makes me again proud being a Stonesfan.

Well, I heard the comlete Album a few times now!! You compare this-one with "Tattoo you" and "Some girls"? I think "A bigger bang" is much stronger than both. Maybe their best Album in the last 43 years!
