B&L is the first album since Exile that Keith doesn't sing a song on it.

I don't no if it's allready mentioned here.

There have been comments that it's the first since Black & Blue. Keith sang Happy on Exile.

Memory Motel would not be the same if Mick sang the bridge.

It's Only Rock 'n' Roll

I dont dislike the album and im glad they record and released something. But one must be critical!

Eggzactly, one must 'feel like one needs to be critical' ... even without really giving it a shot and/or considering there isn't much to be critical about.

11 years after they released ABB (which I like VERY much btw)
I could not have imagined that they record songs that
are full of tension and are raw - and give me goosebumps (of joy).

Like in 1964 it´s not music for the masses - like King Bee 1964 and
Commit A Crime 2016. And it´s not easy listening stuff.

And in these weird and strange times it´s a fantastic statement
against racism
. Like in 1964. White men playing music of their
black heroes. Now THAT is more of a statement than making one night
charity events or playing 2 songs at a benefit gala with Springsteen,
U2 and Sting.

That is what is great about the album, for some of us, they went back to how they started, playing those great tracks from the black artists they love!

.... although i'm not so sure about the statement against racism, I don't really think the Stones thought much about race, not now nor when they started back in the early 60s. Recall, the Stones did not start in the US and were probably at least slightly ignorant of just how much racism there was at that time. (Not saying there wasn't racism in England either, just meaning in terms of segregation, lynchings, etc.)

It's pretty amazing how some are totally missing the boat, btw. They didn't set out to remake Exile, or relive their glory days. They set out to play the basic covers that they love from the older blues artists, it's that simple.

So comparing to them in the late 60s or 70s is quite asinine, sorry to offend, but it is. Try instead comparing to things like "Just Want to Make Love to You", "Honest I Do", "Cops & Robbers", "I'm a King Bee" , think early covers as that's how they did this.

If you don't think they are comparable to the covers they did at that time, then you obviously haven't listened more than twice. And yes, I love the early covers too, but there is no way they 'blow these covers away', not with anyone giving them a real listen.

They're now No 1 in the UK, with sales of over 106,000. The last number one they had was Voodoo Lounge.

I know I'm not the first one to mention this,
but I am extremely pleased that I wasn't familiar with any of the original versions of these songs.

This release is wickedly good!

If your point is that it is ludicrous to expect them to remake Exile or relive or approach their glory days, I agree.

Bu they did not set out to play covers, they set out to make a new album of new songs and they ended up doing this when the other thing hit the wall. It doesn't make it good or bad, but that is what happened. And I do not get the whole "compare" thing. A piece of music grabs you or it does not. It is not a matter of logical analysis or comparison to other music.

They're doing what they did in the 60s - introducing their hearers to some favourite blues tracks that they might not have heard. A few more of us know the originals this time round, but they aren't the kind of old chestnuts that you hear week in week out down the blues club (I only knew Commit a Crime). Mostly, just playing the stuff for the pleasure of it - and it shows.

No, they don´t think about it, but they sometimes mention it when asked.
Their statement is by just DOING it.

Well, I didn't jump right on this album; waited until today Dec. 10th to get and play my copy of Blue And Lonesome. I had some fears that this album might just be a formulaic collection of blues retreads from a band that had run out of ideas. I was afraid the blues covers would have a "been-there-done-that" feel to them. I'm so glad to say I was wrong. Oh, so very, very wrong. This album is truly a raw, authentic adult dose of the blues as done by a band who both loves and excels at this type of music. I don't think I've been so thrilled by Stonesy blues since I heard Black Limousine back in 1981. If the Stones could translate the feel of this album into some new original material, the results might be phenomenal!

The subway Duroc Station in Paris is full with Stones pictures for the release of Blue & Lonesome.
The pictures on the walls were taken during the gig at Stade de France.

As for Black and Blue, Keith has his classic lines in Memory Motel but he has no complete songs to himself.

Clapton's contribution to Blue And Lonesome

When I first listened to it, without the benefit of reading the credits and taking note of who played what ... I was convinced that Clapton was on the track Blue And Lonesome. Only when I actually read the credits did I notice that he actually only plays on Everybody Knows About My Good Thing and I Can't Quit You Baby, which I guess means that the lead work on Blue and Lonesome must be Ronnie ? Extraordinary ... to my ears that sounded like Clapton. Never realised Ronnie could play/sound like that.

It sounds like Ronnie and Mick are on fire on this album.I have heard it from the internet.Alas my copy is stuck in Milwaukee.

I think his signature sound is all over I Can't Quit You Baby, less so for the other track - because a lot of it is slide. That could well be Ronnie, who is no slouch on slide. But that 'Claptonesque' sound shines through for me at any rate on the track Blue And Lonesome, so was surprised to read in fact that he doesn't contribute. Guess it's all down to Ronnie on that one ... ten outa ten to the boy !

The slide is trademark Clapton on EKAMGT. Nice playing.

Love Keith’s slide on Hoo Doo Blues as well.

Blue and Lonesome is very much typical Ronnie on Slide. As much as Clapton is typical Clapton on ENAMGTN & ICQUB.

props to RW on this album...he delivered big time along with all of them. Clapton's contribution is nice, but ...this record was already great because of the 4 major principals.

Clapton is indeed clearly evident on I Can't Quit You Baby, although it's not one of his best solo's by a long shot imo.
I love him, but not sure if he added much to the sessions. Perhaps the neurological issue he's talked about is truly effecting his playing.

Ronnie's playing throughout the album is surprisingly a notch above what I expected - glad he was given the opportunity to shine. thumbs up
