I would add "The London Years, single collection" to their legacy instead of Forty licks.

3 weeks to go!! Of course now we read it's been mixed quite a bit from the original sessions.......and according to Mick very "painstaking". "We all thought it was going to be easy but it wasn't". Wait what?
______________________________________
It appears the 'mixing' of said songs and how to approach the mix was the painstaking part Mick was talking about.. in conjunction with choosing which songs based on their mood and which order to put them in. He was not talking about the recording process .. he was talking about what effects.. processors ....volume levels... order of songs... etc. This was <after> they recorded the material.
In other words... no worries... The recording part of these songs came very easy and naturally and is why they kept going that route. It was when he sat down in April to do some slight overdubbing with Chuck Levell and then mix the album is the 'painstaking' part he was referring to... Painstaking as in 'choices' of how to approach the mix process etc. So no worries.

Almost no new material since 2005 but yes off course no worries.
Off course no worries. We got a great BLUES cover album coming!
Better no new material than lousy albums like Rock and Roll Train and Rock or Burst (the first album that is missing in my AC/DC collection) like AC/DC produced and going on tour without Malcolm, Phil Rudd and Brian Johnson but with Axl Rose .
Better some great blues covers than usless album like Black Ice or Rock or Bust.

The truth: They intend a new album. They are going to regroup for sessions in the New Year. It won't be released until a premium release season. They aren't going to make June, so that would be November. They also don't want to put out anything they don't feel is really good. That includes finding a overall vibe.

In 6 months the industry could be even more removed from what used to be a good time to release something. Perhaps the Stones are a bit too in the past with dealing with releasing something new instead of just being like any band/artist and putting it out whenever. Then again, there are still people who look for that kind of thing. I'm on both sides of that fence.
The charts are essentially over in terms of having any impact at all. How many units someone sells is now a sidebar of conversation.

It won't be out before of late 2017, November-December at best.
So far, I don't know if they are happy with the new stuff, it doesn't look like that on their own words.

Maybe they want the new stuff to be really good ...with a bit more effort put into it than with ABB ?

BLACK ICE is outstanding and almost as good as STIFF UPPER LIP! Alas, I can not speak of ROCK OR BUST because I never got around to getting it.

What I don't quite understand is why they're intending a new album of original material at all when it shines through now that they're not exactly kissed by their muses. I mean, they are not bound by any recording contracts to do a new album, a freedom they rightfully earned throughout their career. So one would guess that they're only doing a new album when the right song material is already there and they're "in the mood" and up for it. It appears now that the opposite is actually true: The decision to do a new album came first, and the search for the right material and mood/inspiration afterwards, resulting in a situation where it becomes apparent that they are not exactly satisfied with the results so far. Is it simply because they're sensing that their time is running out and feel somehow forced to do something new? Any guesses?

I don't think they feel forced at all. If they felt forced or pressured they certainly arent showing it by taking 12 years to put one out and still aren't exactly rushing it lol.
they want to put out an album bc they want to ... they 'want' to produce new material in a new album.. a new recorded project... like any band. Also bc they still see themselves as a fully functional act (in a sense). They simply felt the mood wasnt right or in that they need to revamp things and try another approach next year is all. They felt the mood was too mixed or the material wasnt strong enough and that there wasnt enough of it so they are going to see what happens next year with a new start but not to neglect or bypass all the things they did this year in the studio... they may still use or incorporate it. That's all ..

HAHAHA! These albums made such a low impression I don't even remember the titles. STIFF UPPER LIP has one good track, the title song and BALLBREAKER is lousy too except Hard As A Rock. So that's maybe 4 good tracks in 20+ years. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz........................

Their contract with UMe calls for 3 new albums. What is not known is the specifics of what 3 new albums is: studio, live... because they've released 3 live albums so far with UMe (SHINE A LIGHT, SWEET SUMMER SUN, STICKY FINGERS LIVE).

LIP, for me, is their best post-BACK IN BLACK album, with BLACK ICE being right behind that. Maybe you didn't give them enough of a chance or a listen.

"I’ve got a lot of new songs, and songs I’ve written over the last couple of years. I’ve done really good demos for all of them, which I would love to record. I’d love to record a Stones album. If that doesn’t happen, then yes [to a solo record]. That’s a truthful answer. I’ve got songs that would be great for the Stones, and I’ve got songs that wouldn’t be perfect for the Stones”
Mick, april 2015
...a solo album after Blue and Lonesome?
Do you think it's possible?

I recall that back then, common sense was the Universal deal did not call for any albums of newly recorded studio material, on the other hand and of course giving them the freedom to release one if they wanted. 3 new albums as mentioned by the NY Times can mean anything - live albums, compilations, archive studio material. It's also possible that the Exile and SG bonus discs and now Blue & Lonesome count as 3 albums of new studio material. Without knowing the contract details we can only guess. However, I find it highly unlikely that Universal would have waited so many years for a new studio album if their contract actually obliged them to deliver one at least, not to speak of three!

The Universal deal was initially for a 5 year period, so presumably both parties were happy to renew.
They have of course had Keith's solo effort, which probably wasn't anticipated in 2008 (plus Mick's/Dave Stewart etc).
Will UME have recouped their $15 millon advance by now, given the decline in record sales?
