"According to IFPI's annual report, B&L was the #6 best selling album worldwide in 2016 with 1.8 million units".

Georgelicks, as I see there is a big difference between IFPI's report and Media traffic Global Chart statistics. According to MT annual report B&L was the #11 best selling worldwide in 2016 with 1.3 million units, right? A difference of 5 positions and 500,000 copies is notable. How do you explain it?

It's not possible that B&L sold either 1,8 million or 1,3 million copies in 22 days?

The difference in sales figures could be the difference between actual sold copies to consumers and the numbers shipped out to the record stores, though..

Copies shipped hasn't been counted since sometime in 1991, when it changed to strictly sales.

The amount of stream plays accounts for one copy sold... somehow. Never understood that one.

Mediatraffic is not an official source, they track down the known sales available, sometimes their numbers are spot on and sometimes not.
On the Stones case, they are a worldwide selling band, its a more difficult act to track down sales, not so easy as Rap or R&B acts with a good US number and nothing else.

IFPI is an official source so we should trust on their numbers.

Right now, worldwide sales for B&L are over 2.25m copies according to Universal.

Blue & Lonesome has received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album this morning. Mentioned in the B&L thread, I thought it deserved it's own.. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

This would be only their third Grammy (surprisingly) if they win.

Wondering what kind of competition they have...have the other nominations in this category been named yet?

I see wins for the Voodoo Lounge album, a Lifetime Achievement, and for the video Love is Strong... hard to believe that's it.

Surprised me a bit too.. saw a result that listed a bunch of "Hall of Fame" awards from the Grammys.. but as far as I can tell, they've only won two for the music in addition to their Lifetime Achievement award.

Either way, they're due.. and it was/is an excellent album.

Thanks Cristiano - wish the Stones good luck!
Whether they get the ultimate win or not, a nomination alone can be seen as a win no matter what considering it's an album of covers.
And this all might bode well for the next album in the way they approach it.

Why is any of this hard to believe?

The history of the Grammies proves that they have no relation to good music. The examples of who won over whom in any given year are ridiculous, and well known. I have no clue what these awards are for, some industry insider crap I guess, but they have nothing to do with good music, in my opinion of course.

Just the fact that the Stones have been around for 50+ years - maybe not hard to believe, but a bit surprised.
After all, the Beatles won 25 Grammy's in their relatively short career in comparison to the Stones.
Bob Dylan has won a total of 18.

But I would agree that the Grammys are not always a true measure of great musicians or great music.

Seems the Stones have been snubbed - maybe they'll bring in the trophy this year, and even better maybe they'll be invited to perform one of their blues covers.thumbs up

Elvin Bishop. I saw him live in a bar in Mountain View CA 1,000 years ago
but he sang ‘Fooled Around And Fell In Love’ and I was drinkin* tequila

Anyway. The Rolling Stones better win if they’re nominated. Period.

P.S. nobody cares but I am not implying I connected in anyway w/ Mr. Bishop,
I was with my boyfriend/date small bar on el Camino real it was a great show.

Bob Dylan has won a total of 18.

Where did you get these numbers from?

I simply typed in "How many times have the Beatles won Grammys" in Google search and it was the first thing to appear - 25.

Beatles

As for Dylan, typed in the same thing "How many times has Bob Dylan won a Grammy" and again it was the first the first thing to appear - 18.

Bob Dylan

As for The Beatles, those totals include the Grammy Hall of Fame in which they won 15, and another win for the Grammy Trustees Award.

MisterDDDD's list/link seems to be missing some wins - for instance Michelle won song of the Year (1966), and Let it Be won for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture (1970). I acknowledge wiki is not always accurate, but they show a total of 10 wins (which includes the Lifetime Achievement) along with a slew of other awards (including an Academy Award) - mind boggling.Beatles achievements

These all account for the total numbers in the initial google search, although this totals 26 and not 25 as google states! (10 Grammys, 15 Grammy Hall of Fame, and 1 Grammy Trustee Award)...give or take...

*As for the Stones' win for Love is Strong video - I believe it was for the great video itself (Best Short Form Music Video) and not the song (I could be wrong), and if thats the case the Stones have only won one for music, one for a video, and one for a lifetime achievement.

In contrast, look at Paul McCartney as a solo artist who out of 78 nominations has won 18 times!!! (MACCA)

____________________________________________________________________________________

edit: Out of curioisty, I typed in "How many Grammys have the Rolling Stones won" in to Google search, and the first thing that appears in 9.

Rolling Stones.

This must also include Grammy Hall of Fame awards.

^ Yeah, no one pays attention to the honorary awards. It's the actual wins that count - and the numbers are considerably lower. Dylan didn't win his first solo Grammy until 1980, which was also the last time that McCartney won a non-Beatle Grammy until 2011.

The Grammy website used to have a much better database. I have a scorebook at home that I kept updated until a few years ago.

Song of the year is a songwriter's award, so Michelle was credited to Lennon/McCartney as opposed to the Beatles. Similarly, the best score Grammy was credited to Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Starr as individual composers.

The Grammys have a checkered history, to put it politely, with no awards to the likes of Led Zeppelin or Hendrix, but that reflected the control of the crusty old guard plus artist apathy. Now, with something like 18,000 industry voters, it's probably swung a bit too far in the other direction.

Thanks for all of the clarification Dean Goodman!

As I said earlier, the Grammys are not always a true measure of great musicians or great music.

Alot of people mention the "atrocity" when Jethro Tull beat Metallica in the Heavy Metal category in 1989 (Jethro Tull),
Even though I knew it was completely wrong, I was also quite pleased at the same time as it was such a screw up and proof the Grammy's are somewhat meaningless.
Plus, I've always like Jethro Tull better than Metallica!

'Not always a measure of great musicians'.

Well...quite right.
I mean John Lennon (for example) was hardly a 'great musician'. But he had other gifts so rightly got the awards.
I'm sure Keith has never claimed to be a 'great' guitarist, in the technical sense.

Still find it hard to believe that Dylan is up for the best vocalist award...and his competition includes a 91 year old vocalist (certainly not in his prime), one Tony Bennett.
Like the OSCARS, the whole process doesn't always make much sense.

I'd say that John was a great musician, just as Keith is a great guitarist.

The most important thing you can do with your instrument is making music with it. Few people have done that better than John and Keith.

The Stones better win and should win for this late Masterpiece Tour De Force of the Blues .This album is pure genius from the Rolling Stones and Mick has surely surprised me and totally blown me away with his most super awesome Vocals and Harp playing .Ronnie and Keith really turned it on in such a big mega way on the 6 strings and Charlie keeping time and playing the skins so tastefully like no one else behind a kit .A very big and most heartfelt thank you to Mick Jagger for giving us this album smiling smiley
