Love Al singing Mammy ...

As the Killer said .. there's only
Four music stylists ... Al Jolson
Jimmie Rodgers ... Hank Williams and me ....

They recorded it in Alabama. Love the dual slides. Great song and it adds some rootsy grime to a very polished album.

I’m a fan. I also like the live versions from 1969.

The Killer was completely and utterly full of malarkey and ignorant of his own racist reading of his own country's racist musical heritage. (Although he was the subject of one of rock's greatest biographies, the magnificent Hellfire by the recently departed Nik Tosches.)

Also, notice anything about those 4 "stylists"? They's all white, son!

I'm with Hairball on this one. "You Gotta Move" is a poor pastiche. And Jolson singing "Mammy" is the apotheosis of a minstrel culture whose cruelty still resonates today.

The McDowell version is like a demo compared to what the Stones did with it.

It's a good question, rockee. to be honest i'm not entirely sure what jerry lee means by "stylists."

i'd say the following -- all born before the killer -- could qualify as "stylists" who were at least as seminal or influential as his list:

louis armstrong
chuck berry
james brown
ray charles
nat king cole
sam cooke
sammy davis jr
ella
billie
mahalia jackson
leontyne price
paul robeson
bill robinson
bessie
sarah vaughn
the wolf

btw - you seem to know nik tosches' work: what do you think of his dean martin bio?

Heck Laz …. read Dino years ago ….
finished it but it was a struggle … didn't leave much of an impression

Preferred…. Unsung Heroes … Country twisted roots … dead voices...Hellfire

He dug deep and unearthed weird shit on
stuff like monkey glads and guys like Emmett Miller …

sure knew some obscure records …. gonna be missed

Just the dobro, methinks. Taylor on electric.

So what’s Jagger talking about a 12 string?

I’ll have to re-listen, I thought there were two electrics.

That makes me sad, his biggest payment was 7,000? And when he was already dying from cancer! Damn, life sure kicks some people in the balls!

Must be a dobro on the original recording. On SF Live Keith plays a 12 string acoustic. I don't hear two electrics on the studio version.

I like the SF live version with Keith on 12 string then the 75 live version.

The only thing that bugs me is that he plays the riff in minor, instead of in major smiling smiley

Note #2 should have been half a step up...

Ah, so Jagger was just confusing the record with the modern performance.
