Peter Mansbridge of the CBC has done an interview with Gord Downie, which airs tonight at 10:00 Toronto time on The National, or can later be watched on line here: [www.cbc.ca]

From the trailer, it looks to be powerful stuff.

I never once heard TH on the radio in the States. There was a Canadian tv show that I used to watch--must be at least 15-20 years ago--and there was this great song that they played during the closing credits. So I taped an episode so that I could pause it and read what song it was and what band: Blow at High Dough, the Trajically Hip. So I bought the CD with that song on it: Up to Here. Great album, really enjoy it. Knew nothing about the band, not even that they are Canadian, just really like that album. So sad to learn the news about Downie's illness. So all you Canadian TH fans, which of their other albums should I buy? I will only buy one or two, so please don't tell me to buy them all. Let me know your recommendations. Thanks. And peace to Downie and the band.

I should have mentioned when you posted...That was Rick Mercer's Made In Canada, ran from '98 to '03. A funny series.

I have no idea where to post this...

Tonight, I went to Massey Hall to see Blue Rodeo, a pretty fine Canadian band that I've liked for years and only seen live once, years ago. I was third row.

The Sadies opened and were a lovely surprise. Jimmy Bowskill is playing with BR now - he is the kid whom Jeff Healey discovered and mentored when he was about 12 years old. He played at Healey's memorial in 2008. Gord Pinsent was sitting nearby, Gordon Lightfoot was escorted past me backstage near the end of the show... Just before the encore, everyone stood up and the entire hall sang Hasn't Hit Me Yet, and I found myself standing at front of stage.

Lovely two song encore then...they introduced Gord Downie and the place exploded. He came out, with The Sadies, and they all sang Lost Together, as did everyone in the place. They have all clearly known each other for years, and adore each other. So grateful to see Gord Downie (and Lightfoot, and Pinsent...) again. I was in tears leaving the hall.

Oh yeah...random Stones moment. For some reason, they played the first half of England's Newest Hitmakers between The Sadies and Blue Rodeo. I think I was the only one quietly singing along.

So much for one night. Very grateful to have been there.

Sorry you missed it, TF. Hope you enjoyed your visit, and that it wasn't too cold. Temp droped yesterday, we're breaking out the fleece-lined bras today.

It was cold but not too cold...I had "a cold" so stayed inside most of the trip, either in meetings or in my hotel, which is always a bit of a drag.

Such a cool story STG!!

I am a Brit that has close ties to Canada, and I understand how important the Tragically Hip are to the nation. One of my many visits, back in '98 was at the time of the 'Phantom Power' album, and I remember the lead single really well. I heard it again a few years later in London, at the Maple Leaf bar on Canada Day. Great times!!

Thanks Mr J! Nice to hear from you. I'll have to find the Maple Leaf Bar next time I'm in London. And if I remember correctly, you play a pretty mean piano...

In 2009 they played the Effenaar in Eindhoven the Netherlands. I didn't know them other than having heard of their name. I had a great night. Great music and a very warm personality.

I was puzzled why they were not more famous than they were.

Hard to say. When they toured last summer, he performed really well but relied on a teleprompter for the lyrics. When I saw him 4+ months ago with Blue Rodeo he had the lyrics on a scrap of paper and didn't sing as far as I could see. The disease can progress quickly - a friend lost a spouse to this and it's a beast - so I was actually pleased to see him doing so well this week. Touring? I'm very pessimistic - the length of time to gear up, insurance... No, I think last summer was it. He has 4 kids, youngest not yet a teen, I expect he's spending time with family and friends, and whatever else interests him, like the Secret Path / Chanie Wenjack project that has been so well received. I hope he does exactly what he wants.

I'm taking a History of Rock class this summer. If anyone wants a great history and geography lesson of Canada, this band does it. Thank you STG and I hope the best for Gord.

Love to know more about your course, shattered.

The CBC is re-broadcasting the Hip's last concert this Saturday at 8pm Toronto time. Not sure if it will be available on line, but wouldn't be surprised.

OMG, thank you for the linkage. I'll tune in and watch that show...again. I love the comments that Gord gives - it's powerful.

I kept this quiet until now. Read on.

The class....if you can find one at a school in Toronto, take it period

You don't have to be a musician but would help finding rhythm, beat, syncopations, and melisma’s (words sound familiar from another post here by the professor: “The Rolling Stones and soul music”)? The text book goes into song and the author's use IORR as the template for lyrics structure and beat - Charlie's backbeat. More, the class provides a history of how Rock evolved in the USA - which you can guess - from Africa's Gold Coast, (Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields, sold in a market down in New Orleans) to Ireland and Scottish folk ballads. Mick sings this for a reason and now I know. All of this was synthesized especially by the Stones which was buried deep in the south until after the 13th Amendment. Then the Minstrels and Ragtime started. It took another 75 years for RnB, Country, Blues, Hillbilly, and Rockabilly to surface and where did it go? Chicago. Chess Records. Chuck Berry was the architect. Wonder why the thread: "Pictures of Rolling Stones members with other famous people” is so good? There is a reason. I spent six hours at Exhibitionism piecing this together and it is easy. From their dairies of favorite singers; Chuck Berry is consistent among Brian, Keith, Bill, and Charlie except Mick; which is Johnny Cash. The stage is set for recording, film, glam, and style for the band every person on this site loves. The class goes into producers and I'll bet you know their names. I’m only half way through, and we started to look at films. Soul is next and remember, Rock didn’t just fly out of nowhere. It evolved by some real geniuses with some twists. If the remainder of the class is as good as the beginning, this hits home in the USA. Rockman has a universe of information to match all of this up. There must be a parallel with the Hip in Canada taught in Canadian schools which is fertile for me to study.

Kind regards, take care STG, and thank you for asking.

STG: You should look around. The classes are there. I know Toronto or even in another city has to offer a History of Rock music class. Mine is online. I found it by accident. My God, The Hip and a history/geography class with you being a Stones fan, that would be a scream.

The last assignment was to review Rock Around the Clock, Great Balls of Fire, The Buddy Holly Story, or La Bamba to find out if Hollywood manipulates the story for a "larger truth". The films do manipulate the story to get a portion of the audience in the name of a Blockbuster. Only seeing these artist's tour and watch em play the music gets the point across 100%. So, not to brag, I'm working on No. 4 and No. 5 Stones shows on this tour for that very reason.
