The story I read was that Keith didn't really like Mick's vocal, or thought he could do better, and came in the next day and did it himself. And then insisted his version be used.

Please, more info if you have it. Read it where?

I think most 'Keith songs' never began as such. They just both worked on a song, working out melodies and lyrics,
and when the track is finished or near to finished they decide whose voice works best with the track.
YGTS is a good example, as is All About You. There's an outtake where you can hear Jagger and Richards
working out a lyric and vocal melody on a track that's near to finished.

Mathijs, do you mean an outtake of All About You, or Silver, or something else?

Anyone hear the Autoharp? And any pictures of Brian playing one?

Yes, it's quite clear, listen for a kind of metallic sound, strumming.

Never seen a photo of Brian playing autoharp. Keith played one on Ride On Baby in 66, there's probably one on If You Let Me as well, not sure who played it on that.

Didn't Bill play the autoharp on the song Let it bleed?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Two great Live version you can find on Mascara de Piedra bootleg by Xavel.

The "organ" you can listen there gives a special aura on the song.

so, on the assumption folks have heard the version w/ Mick on lead vocals (I think it is on "Acoustic M'Fers")....

which do you prefer? Keef or Mick?

Personally, I think Mick "yells" too much at the end and it ruins the more "mellow" nature of the song. It becomes almost "too intense" for lack of a better term.

Sure, Keef picks-up-the-pace (intensity?) a bit at the end, but I think his voice simply lends itself to the mellow/smooth vibe of the entire song better (and he doesn't seem to be "yelling" at all).

Perhaps this is why they ultimately went w/ the Keef version? Maybe they coulda/should re-recorded the Mick version and told him "tone it down, dude?"...

but, even if they had....I think I still like Keef.

Maybe I just like cheering for the underdog?

Either way...this is definitely my favorite Keef song...so good it makes the "bedroom" mixed-tape every time.

Mixed tapes...the only good thing about the "cassette era"

but, I digress....as usual.
